The Raiders will be eyeing quarterback prospects in the upcoming draft, but they might not wait for a signal-caller to fall to No. 13. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Raiders could be a trade suitors for a top-three pick.
Fowler notes that head coach Antonio Pierce is a “big fan” of Jayden Daniels, but the organization would surely have to trade for the LSU quarterback. Pierce and Daniels crossed paths during their stints at Arizona State, and that familiarity makes the Raiders a natural landing spot for the prospect.
Further, Fowler notes that Pierce was evaluating offensive coordinator candidates with “the loose possibility of Daniels in mind.” The team’s first choice for OC, Kliff Kingsbury, most recently worked with the draft’s top QB prospect, USC’s Caleb Williams. When Kingsbury declined the Raiders offer and opted for the Commanders’ job, the Raiders pivoted to Luke Getsy.
Fowler assumes that the Bears will take Williams with the first-overall pick, meaning the Raiders will likely have to trade with the Commanders (No. 2) or the Patriots (No. 3) if they want to add Daniels or UNC’s Drake Maye. New GM Tom Telesco was known for his drafting prowess during his years with the Chargers, although his strategy usually didn’t feature home-run, draft-day trades.
With that in mind, it’s notable that the team recently met with Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. at the Senior Bowl, per Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Penix is hoping to emerge as the fourth QB on the draft board (following Williams, Daniels, and Maye), although he’s not consistently projected for the first round.
Regardless of how things unfold during the draft, it’s likely that the Raiders will be eyeing a new signal-caller in 2024. Jimmy Garoppolo barely played once Pierce was named the interim head coach, and the veteran will likely be a trade/cut candidate. And while rookie Aidan O’Connell was a standout during the final chunk of the season, it sounds like the Raiders envision him as more of a backup. If the Raiders strike out in the draft, the team could turn to the likes of Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield, and Jameis Winston via free agency.
Good luck with that…
These teams just fool themselves. The Raiders aren’t a QB short of competing. It’s a top heavy roster of a few vets and castoffs. The AP has 2-3 years of assistant coaching in the NFL vs Chargers, Chiefs & Broncos; all having vet HC coaches?
They need to trade back, get new blood and actually develop a team.
But they won’t. And they won’t be the only team that trades a fortune for a hopefully lucky lottery ticket in the draft.
Exactly! Well said! That’s how you build a team, a good team!
Daniel’s in Mid, my Falcons better stay away.
Huh
They could trade for Fields. Not sure if they like him, but it would be much cheaper to do
So you’re gonna pair Getsy and Fields again?
Lol I didn’t think about that at all. No, I actually wouldn’t. Good catch.
On that note, who should they target with Getsy as the OC, free agency or otherwise? It would cost too much to move up unless somebody slides on draft day. Just go after Cousins? I really don’t see him leaving Minnesota since they seem to want each other
Raiders would have to give up a lot to convince NE to give up the chance to take Jayden Daniels. Pats go from 3 to 13 and try to get Bo Nix? I don’t think that is going to happen without the Raiders giving up their 2024 1st and 2nd rounders as well as their 2025 1st and 2nd rounders. it would be great for NE but would leave the shelves barren in LV. In this situation LV would be better off staying at 13 and selecting best QB available imo.
They would be better to trade for a guy like Fields if the price isn’t bad (3rd round or later) and sign a guy like Wilson/Kirk to a decently priced deal while they build out the rest of the roster, or sign a cheap guy like Mason Rudolph and build out the roster and while losing more games and be in a better position to draft a QB higher in the draft.
Does Luke Getsy want to be stuck with Fields again? I doubt it.
Kirk Cousins is going to get paid where ever he goes, he is not a decently priced QB imo. I doubt Kirk wants to jump into that ‘rebuild’ when he already has a great relationship with his team in MIN. If Purdy plays like crap in the SB you can bet SF is going to consider bringing in Cousins next year. Kirk is also closely linked to ATL cuz of his wife’s family is there and Kirk spends his summers in ATL with the in-laws.
LV could give Mason Rudolph, Joe Flacco, or maybe Jameis Winston a try. I know Winston didn’t have a great 30/30 year but the last time he started he was playing well, and looked like he had cleaned up some of his mistakes. I think LV needs to build the roster and bring in a Vet who can give the team some stability. O’Connell looks okay but I doubt he is a starer outside of LV.
I don’t think Kirk’s market will be as robust as we think coming off injury and with Minnesota’s desire to keep him around.
Also, I don’t see SF moving off of Purdy no matter how bad of a game he plays on Sunday. He turned in a great year almost every single game played. System guy or not he is the 2025 starter barring injury.
Kirk is going to get a fully guaranteed contract like he always does. He could stay in MIN but he is going to have options else where. 2 year $86 million fully guaranteed is close to what he will get. The injury isn’t as big of a concern as some would think. He is on pace for a full recovery. He is a pocket passer so the injury isn’t as big of a factor as it would be for a duel-threat QB.
There aren’t any QB’s available that are far better than O’Connell. I’d stick with him and build the team with the draft and free agency around him. And then when there is a clear, better option at QB available, pull the trigger.
The reason I think his suitors will be limited lies in the fact that he tends to secure guaranteed deals. Not many teams that want him outside of a few will be able to manage that cap hit.
Sure some void years could be tacked on but that may not work for some teams either.
I think Daniels would have to fall to #5 in order to be worth trading up. I don’t see that happening. If I were the Raiders, I’d sign Wilson and then trade back to maybe #20.
If Nix or McCarthy are available, draft them. If not, draft the best CB or IDL available and then draft Rattler.
