It was reported last month that the Jets plan to trade quarterback Zach Wilson, which was not at all surprising given Wilson’s largely disappointing three-year run with the club. Subsequent reports suggesting that the Wilson-Aaron Rodgers relationship was not in a good place, coupled with owner Woody Johnson‘s candid remarks about his team’s quarterback situation, underscored the likelihood of a Wilson exit.
To that end, Wilson himself has begun to evaluate trade options, as Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com recently detailed (subscription required). Gang Green selected Wilson in head coach Robert Saleh‘s first draft with the team, which means Wilson has never worked under an offensive-minded HC; per Fowler, the BYU product is interested in a bench boss with more of an offensive background. It is unclear whether the Jets have granted Wilson permission to seek a trade at this point, though the fact that Wilson is likely not near the top of the wishlist for QB-needy clubs means that a deal may not be consummated before the draft anyway.
Wilson, who will turn 25 before the start of the 2024 regular season, was supposed to serve as Rodgers’ backup in 2023. But when Rodgers’ season was cut short just four snaps into the campaign, Wilson was against thrust into the starting lineup. Playing behind an injury-riddled O-line and under an offensive coordinator (Nathaniel Hackett) who has been criticized for his inability to adequately adjust to the Rodgers injury, Wilson did not show much improvement over his prior work, completing 60.1% of his passes for eight TDs and seven interceptions. That amounted to a QBR of 30.6 (worst among primary starters) and a quarterback rating of 77.2 (third-worst). The Jets went 4-7 in his starts.
Rich Cimini of ESPN.com thinks it is unlikely that the Jets will simply cut Wilson — aside from the embarrassment such a move would be for the team, a pre-June 1 cut would yield a dead money charge of over $11MM with no corresponding cap savings — though their trade return will obviously be limited. Cimini’s sources believe that Wilson will fetch a sixth- or seventh-round selection, and that a swap of middle-round picks is also a possibility. One exec also floated the idea of a conditional 2025 selection (with the condition being how many snaps Wilson takes for the acquiring team in 2024).
One way or another, it sounds as if Wilson has played his last snap for the Jets, as Johnson made it abundantly clear that New York will need a new No. 2 passer. Interestingly, Connor Hughes of SNY.tv writes that some within the organization are high on Commanders QB Sam Howell, who just finished a disappointing season of his own.
There is no indication that Washington, which is likely to select a top quarterback prospect with the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, is prepared to deal Howell, who led the league with 21 interceptions in 2023 but who did show flashes of high-end abiltity. The Commanders may prefer to hold on to the 2022 draftee in case their rookie passer is not immediately ready to take the reins, or simply to have a capable backup on hand. But if the team elects to move him, Hughes believes the Jets should pounce.
Trade him to Bucs for a late rounder have him sit behind baker for 1-2 years and learn
Why would TB want him?
Who knows? Potential
He only has 1 year left on his current contract. They have other clip board holders now on team. Would be crazy to give up even a seventh rounder for that.
@hawktattoo- There is almost always someone willing to give up something for a QB deemed to have promise. Look at the price Carolina paid for two years of Darnold. Look at the price Dallas paid for two years of Lance. Someone probably gives up a 6th or 7th for the opportunity to evaluate him in practice. Teams put a lot more stock into practice performance than fans do.
I agree but my response is to comment on TB signing him to learn and watch for 1 or 2 years. Would not be a good move for TB
That’s fair. I agree that TB is probably not the right situation unless they think a competition between Trask and Wilson for QB2 could lead to growth.
I think if someone wants to gamble on upside, a deal should happen after the draft since there are about 8-9 QBs in this class who could feasibly become something.
lol….they have a career clipboard holder in trask….dont need another one.
Trask has the best job. Paid well ($1M+ p/y), sideline ticket to each game – home and away, first class accommodations when traveling, free clothing and laundering services during season, with very little risk. Maybe shows up for work once a year if necessary.
Sam Howell had a disappointing finish to the season
He’s on a disappointing team.
do not underestimate Sam… The kid is tough and mobile…
What’s the difference between “QBR” and “quarterback rating”?
Great question. This article has a pretty useful description of how the two differ. link to nfeloapp.com
Things can get rather embarrassing when ESPN tries to prove how clever it can be.
I think the most basic explanation is that QB Rating takes into account just raw stats where QBR looks deeper into game scenarios and situations.
The only embarrassment is continuing to carry this guy on the roster. It’s time to move on, admit your mistake and look for the next young qb you’re gonna destroy
Lol
Andy Hart on the 6 Rings Podcast had a good idea. Zach Wilson to the Patriots for Mac Jones. Two guys who had promise that need a chance of scenery. Neither would start, but they can get a restart.
Not likely that the Pats would do that since Wilson is due to make considerably more by virtue of draft position. The Pats are more likely to draft a QB and either keep Bailey Zappe as his backup or sign a veteran to do it. I’m not certain the Jets would want that either since I don’t see Mac Jones as Rodgers’ backup and heir apparent.
He will end up with the Eagles as a non- threatening qb2. Howie apparently loved him during that draft.
Can’t understand how he would have any value on the market, I get he’s a Quarterback, but he’s pretty dramatic for a career backup
What team in their right mind would trade any asset for Wilson when there will be so many other options available, especially after this year’s draft? Better to take a flyer on a latter-round option.
You could ask the same to the teams who gave up legitimate assets for the following QBs:
-Brad Johnson for a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
-Late career Carson Palmer for a 1st and 2nd
-Drew Bledsoe for a 1st coming off a major injury
-Chris Chandler for #2 overall
-Rick Meier for a 1st
-Rob Johnson (!) for a 1st
-Jeff George for two 1sts and a 3rd
-Sam Darnold for a 2nd, 4th, and 6th
-Trey Lance for a 4th
-Late career Nick Foles for a 4th
-Carson Wentz for a 2nd and 3rd
-A.J. McCarron for a 5th
-Teddy Bridgewater and a 6th for a 3rd based on 3 healthy training camp games after signing in the offseason
-Matt Flynn for a 5th and conditional pick despite his absurd contract
I could go on, but I’ll stop there.
And that’s precisely why I say parity is a myth. Bad teams continually make bad decisions. Jets, Cards, LV, Chargers, Flacons, Jags…..
Shocking Rodgers pretend to be supportive with media. Then no support for backup. He learned from the best Favre. Both have very fragile egos.
Cut him and sign Darnold.
And when that doesn’t work the Jets can play their ace card and bring back Christian Hackenberg.
Browning Nagle
Every team has better options at QB. I would rather get Tim Tebow out of retirement than to have Wilson. There will be no trade. Any team that was even slightly interested will wait for him to be cut and save their 7th rounder. You could draft a Brock Purdy or Tom Brady in the sixth or seventh round!
Everyone complains about coaches getting a dozen chances in the league. It’s the same for players. Zach shouldn’t be in the NFL, but some team will ‘see promise’ in him. Easier and cheaper to get a rookie to hold a clipboard for a year or two.
The big difference is that players are willing to go on the field and subject their bodies to physical punishment. I feel they are more deserving of second chances than those coaches that are only relying on their “buddy” relationships to keep them employed.
That’s their choice. No one is forcing them to play the game. It’s the fame & fortune that keeps them going.
It also doesn’t change the fact that Zach is a at best a 3rd string QB that should only make the vet minimum. He’s a camp arm, that’s it. But some team will still see his ‘upside’ and overpay vis draft capital and cap space.
3-years seems to be the lifespan of a Jets 1st Rd QB of late. Who’s holding their beer as they respond to the banter that Cleveland sucks at drafting QBs?
The Jets have really devalued Wilson to the rest of the league. I seriously doubt any team with trade for him, take on that contract for the next year (I don’t believe his 5th year option was either picked up or will be picked up) and let him be a backup QB.
Instead if a team is interested they’ll wait for him to be released, wait the time (I believe it’s 24 hours) until he’s a UFA and make an offer for veterans minimum to sign him. Thereby not making a huge investment and they could cut him if he doesn’t make it without massive dead cap hit. Either way Wilson will have one last year to prove he belongs.
Wilson’s disappointing 3 year run is the Jets fault because they didn’t properly develop him. Same thing can be said about Darnold 3 years earlier. Some teams never learn
Will be interesting to see what the Jets do with this bust. The Steelers should follow suit with their own bust of a QB
Zach Wilson is not good
