The 2024 free agent class is set to feature a number of high-profile running backs. Austin Ekeler is likely to be one of them with his Chargers deal about to expire.
Ekeler is expected to reach the open market, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. That comes as no surprise given the nature of Ekeler’s 2023 offseason, one in which he asked for an was granted permission to seek a trade. He will have the ability to depart the organization he has spent his entire career with, although the plethora of accomplished backs who will also be available will no doubt limit his value.
None of the three running backs who received the franchise tag last year (Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, Tony Pollard) are expected to be tagged a second time. No member of that trio performed at a level in 2023 which would make them an obvious candidate for a long-term deal, something which has no doubt informed their respective teams’ hesitancy to make a lucrative commitment. Schefter confirms that Titans stalwart Derrick Henry is also expected to reach free agency, something which was foreshadowed throughout the campaign.
Ekeler sought out a raise on a new Chargers deal, and his inability to land one led to his trade request. No suitors emerged, and he ultimately remained in Los Angeles on a re-worked contract. The two-time NFL leader in total touchdowns thus set himself up for free agency, while being a vocal member of the league’s running backs who have aired their frustrations over the stagnant nature of the position’s market. In an era where a number of positions have seen surging values, the RB spot has flatlined.
The 2023 campaign was an important one for Ekeler given his status as a pending free agent. The 28-year-old was limited to 14 games, however, and he was less efficient when on the field (3.5 yards per carry) than any other season in his career. After scoring 38 total touchdowns from 2021-22, Ekeler managed only six as part of a Chargers offense which struggled across the board but especially in the ground game.
While then-head coach Brandon Staley hinted at a divvying up of running back opportunities late in the campaign, Ekeler averaged 12.8 carries per game in 2023. That falls in line with his usage rate of the past four seasons, which has seen his career carries total reach 990. Many backs at his age have more mileage on them, but last season’s struggles will still likely be a key factor working against him on the open market.
The former UDFA landed a four-year, $24.5MM deal in 2020. That $6.13MM AAV ranks 11th in the league amongst running backs, and Ekeler will likely be hard-pressed to improve on his standing in the position’s pecking order on his new deal, regardless of where it comes from. Chargers backup Joshua Kelley is also a pending free agent, so the team could see significant turnover at the RB spot in the near future.
I can see him fitting well with the Eagles offense plus they got Kellen Moore so it’s very possible. He also has history with former LA coach Anthony Lynn who’s now running backs coach for commanders. He could mesh well with Brian Robinson in the backfield
They would only do it for the right price. RB by committee has suited the Eagles just fine.
Swift was the workhorse and he’s a free agent this offseason. Unless they want to move off and make Gainwell number 1
I wouldn’t call the Eagles a committee. Swift ran 229 times. Gainwell ran 84…
@MyCommentIsBetter—facts lol. Penny maybe had 3 carries all year haha
How much did they pay Swift? They had Swift as the main back with Gainwell and Scott as change of pace. They wouldn’t pay Ekler price just like they wouldn’t pay Sanders
Team friendly deal
Dude blackballed himself last offseason. The leading voice of “RB’s are underpaid…” only to have a an injury marred, low-stat season. Teams might as well try another UDFA like he was for pennies.
If this guy doesn’t want to be underpaid maybe he should stop fumbling the ball every 47 carries on average. There will never be much of a market for players who have established themselves as turnover machines.
Yep!
Bengals could seriously use this guy and move on from Mixon. Need to add a good TE as well, then KC might have something to worry about if the Bengals stay healthy.
Is the running game really what you feel that separates the chiefs from the bengals?
The bengals would be better served using that money on their offensive line or somewhere on the defense
I see Bowers get mocked to them a lot, although I don’t think he’d slide that far in the draft personally.
Mixon provides outstanding ball security (averages a fumble every 220 carries) while Ekeler is a turnover machine. Retaining Joe is a no brainer.
i do. Mixon is done. A multi threat RB will do wonders. They can still add linemen in the draft.
Mixon is still under contract but he’d have to take a lot less money again which he already did 2023. Chase brown could be the guy with a RB by his side like pollard
Now watch as Saquon Barkley signs with the Chargers and has them win the Vince Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl 59.
All 4 of these guys (Ekeler, Barkley, Pollard, Jacobs) proved why you don’t give a huge contract to an aging RB. Jonathan Taylor did as well but the Colts were dumb enough to guarantee him multiple years. Jim Irsay = moron.
This RB market is going to be fascinating. Personally I wouldn’t give any of them 10 million a year although I’d guess someone will pay Saquon that. If they all get squeezed it could finally destroy the RB market completely.
Yards per carry in 2023:
Barkley – 3.9
Ekeler – 3.5
Jacobs – 3.5
Pollard – 4.0
You can get that kind of production from a 5th round rookie for peanuts in salary.
When you look at the body of their work across multiple seasons – no you can’t.
He will go to some title contender due to his age. He will be used more in the passing game.
I think Ekeler could be a good fit in Baltimore. With both Gus Edwards and JK Dobbins becoming free agents I’d expect the Ravens are adding a RB in free agency and in the draft. Keaton Mitchell, Ekeler and a mid round pick seems like the kind of general smorgasbord of RBs that the Ravens will somehow turn into a top 5 rushing unit like they do every year.
I have a feeling Derrick Henry is the one they want though.
Chargers due to being in the Red already need to make some big roster cuts and then smart FA signings to fill the spaces.
Ekler is gone, he’s older banged up, wants money and had a poor season.
I think they need to replace him cheaply and find a veteran RB that can share carries and play it as a RB committee. Kareem Hunt would probably be my target. Yes the numbers are down on him too but he still gives you TD’s, he can catch the ball aswell and doesn’t give you the fumbles.
I’d also draft in Bucky Irving, who I think could be a huge steal. Looks really quick, and elusive, excellent balance and makes big plays.
Also the guy they already have Spiller, he can probably take some carries too if you need.
I can also see Mike Williams getting cut to save some money. Allen just had one of his best seasons you’ll need his experience but Williams after the injury, it’s just business unfortunately.
With Allen 6’2, Palmer 6’1 and Johnson 6’4 I could see them looking to add a smaller more explosive like Darnell Mooney or Mecole Hardman.
Then lastly TE, please draft Brock Bowers.
Herbert with a bunch of new RB options, an elite TE, a top tier HC and some good WRers.
