The events of Week 17 significantly boosted Lamar Jackson‘s chances of winning his second career MVP award. The level of play the Ravens signal-caller has showcased in 2023 has led to a new round of questions regarding the apathy shown around the league with respect to acquiring him in the offseason.
The Ravens used the non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson, a move which opened the door to offer sheets being at the disposal of teams interested in attempting to sign him (or at least make Baltimore’s efforts to do the same more difficult). Very quickly, however, several teams with question marks under center bowed out and Jackson eventually inked a five-year, $260MM deal.
While no teams are known to have submitted an offer sheet, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Raiders and Panthers both made inquiries into adding Jackson. Vegas faced the challenge of replacing Derek Carr in the offseason, while Carolina was one of several teams in position to add a new passer by means of the draft or another avenue. The former left open the possibility of a Jackson pursuit, though nothing materialized to a serious extent. The latter, meanwhile, was among the large contingent which backed out in lieu of focusing on the draft.
As Schefter notes, teams around the league expressed concern about Jackson’s injury history when considering an offer sheet. The 26-year-old missed the end of the 2021 and ’22 seasons due to knee ailments, something which would have needed to be considered when authorizing a monster contract upon arrival (and which would have included an independent medical evaluation with his new team). Adding the price of two first-round picks for Jackson signing an unmatched offer sheet, the fact he remained in Baltimore comes as little surprise.
Still, the Louisville alum’s play this year (and that of the Ravens as a whole) has proven the lack of desire on the part of QB-needy teams to be noteworthy. Vegas added a short-term Carr replacement in the form of Jimmy Garoppolo, though he struggled when on the field before losing his staring gig midway through the campaign. The Raiders are now evaluating fourth-round rookie Aidan O’Connell as a No. 1 option, though they can be expected to be in the market for an addition of some kind in the new league year.
The Panthers have likewise endured an underwhelming season under center. Looking to stop the cycle of stop-gap additions at the QB spot, the team acquired the top pick in the draft by sending the Bears a haul involving two first- and second-round selections as well as wideout D.J. Moore. Bryce Young‘s debut campaign has not gone according to plan, and his and the team’s offensive struggles led to the firing of head coach Frank Reich among other staffers.
Schefter notes that questions remain around the league with respect to why no serious efforts were made to pursue a Jackson offer sheet. Prevailing theories point to the Ravens simply matching any offers which were submitted, but it remains a talking point through the close of the campaign that Baltimore – the team which secured the AFC’s top seed on Sunday – was able to retain him with relative ease.
Who cares who made inquiries about Lamar last year. The only story is what a phenomenal year he,s having.
What was there to enquire about? 2 first round picks for him, and everyone knew the parameter for the contract Lamar wanted. I’ll say this, Lamar gave the league a double middle finger salute all season!
There is no way that Vegas had any interest in Lamar Jackson this offseason. Josh McDaniels and Dave Zeigler could care less about a player if they didn’t have a Patriot past.
True, but the Raiders would’ve been really good this year with Lamar. Hindsight
I hope AP gets the HC gig. Team has done really with him leading the charge.
If Antonio Pierce is going to get the HC gig, there has to be a commitment.
Jimmy G will be shown the door possibly leaving a $28 mil cap hit. I hope that the Saints and the Jet’s both decide that Adams is the key to winning and a bidding war ensues. I hope that Josh Jacob’s and Renfrow find a happy landing spots, and half the O-Line will be free agents.
The new GM and HC will be faced with another re-build. If AP gets the job, there will be some growing pains.
Baltimore is so glad no one took Lamar off their hands! They look like SB faves and he’s a lock for MVP
All I read on here was how Jackson wasn’t worth 2 first and a big contract. A lot teams look awful stupid and that includes Baltimore for letting your franchise quarterback get that close to leaving
All GM’s knew the Ravens were going to match any offer made. Negotiating with Lamar would have been a waste of time.
well Baltimore will have to pay out the ass now for him after the season he’s having and I’m not sure they are use to doing that . someone will pay him and it will depend on if he wants Watson money or not . I mean any team would be dumb to pay that . Baltimore just needs to ensure they don’t play Washington and keep tagging
I think he’s signed for multiple years. 4 or 5
Jackson signed a 5 year $260 million contract with $185 million guaranteed. If Baltimore was to say cut or release him for some reason, Jackson would be a $112+ million dollar hit in 2024. So yes they are paying out the ass, but yes he will be a Raven.
Hindsight is always 20/20.
This year he is an mvp candidate so other teams fans are like wtf why didn’t we sign him
On the other hand next year he could blow his acl and other teams fans will be like phew glad we didn’t sign him!
2022 and 2021 he missed 5 games each. I don’t blame a team for not giving up 2 1st round picks and paying him 5 year $260 million contract with $185 million guaranteed. The Deshaun Watson deal hasn’t gone smoothly for the Browns and Burrows deal is off to a rocky start with the Bengals.
Good for Lamar but let’s put things into context.
Also, not even Lamar could save the Panthers offense. Raiders have their own issues. Both teams have issues on the oline.
Doesn’t getting injured apply to everyone? Rodgers, Burrow, Watson, Cousins, Herbert, Jones, and Richardson are all high priced quarterbacks or 1st round pick that are shelved for the season. Not signing someone because he “might” get hurt is the dumbest excuse I’ve ever heard
Burrows Herbert Richardson Cousins Jones didn’t cost 2 1st round draft picks and a mega contract.
Jets and jets fans have regretted the Rodgers deal since it was made
The Watson deal has been horrible for the browns who gave up 3 1sts and a mega contract
Your own examples prove why it’s a bad idea to give up significant draft capital and a mega contract to guys genius
Add on Russell Wilson who cost the broncos 2 top 10 1st round picks and a mega deal.
Dumbest things on this site are things deer hunter says.
Lamar wouldn’t have made the panthers or raiders better. Itd be a Russell Wilson situation or Watson situation where you think you’re getting a franchise qb but the team and organization is subpar so you get middling results and just waste 1st round picks.
Raiders only have Adams on offense they traded Waller.
Panthers would only have had dj moore
Ravens offensive line ranks top 10 maybe top 5
Car and Lv rank outside top 20.
Ravens are a well run organization
Car and Lv not so much
It’s pretty ignorant dumb and just plain stupid to think Lamar would have the season he is having on raiders or panthers
I would just like to say the guy most of you complained about paying to me on this site is about to win a 2nd MVP. I claimed had he went to the NFC he’d be the best QB in the conference. Well, looks like it doesn’t matter AFC or NFC….
I bet those he’s not worth it articles had way more comments on them last spring. The criticizers are very quiet now. He’s been the second best QB in the league for years now and is closer to Mahomes than the next guy is to him. He’s so unique and dynamic. It’s an eye test thing with him that statistics can’t always tell you. The same with this second MVP he’s about to win with the pinheads arguing numbers to discredit it. Watch the games.
