The Bill Belichick sweepstakes has officially kicked off. The Falcons announced this evening that they’ve interviewed the iconic head coach for their own HC vacancy.

Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Belichick recently met in person with Falcons owner Arthur Blank to discuss the opportunity. While no deal is imminent, Pelissero notes that there’s mutual interest between the two sides and “conversations are ongoing.”
Once the Patriots and Belichick made their divorce official, we heard that the Falcons could make a strong push for the head coach. There were also whispers that Blank was seeking more experience during this coaching cycle. While the owner’s previous hires (Jim Mora Jr., Bobby Petrino, Mike Smith, Dan Quinn, Arthur Smith) were first-time head coaches, Blank’s current focus on experience certainly made Belichick a logical target.
Of course, there’s a bit of history between the two sides. Belichick was famously on the sideline when his Patriots erased a 28-3 deficit to defeat the Falcons in Super Bowl LI. Since then, the Falcons have seen an NFC South rival, the Buccaneers, snag a future Hall of Famer from New England and win a Super Bowl. Blank and the Falcons brass are clearly banking on similar fortunes this time around.
The Falcons have loaded up on skill positions in recent drafts, and Pro Football Focus ranked Atlanta’s offensive line — one spearheaded by Chris Lindstrom and Jake Matthews — fourth overall. Further, the front office invested some money into the defense in 2023, and the organization will presumably invest similarly in 2024 if Belichick takes over. The Falcons are expected to reside in the middle of the cap-space pack, with the organization projected to carry more than $21MM.
Of course, the team’s lack of certainty at quarterback could scare away some HC candidates, even with the organization expected to take a bigger QB swing heading into the offseason. Of course, Belichick has famously downplayed the significance of the QB position, a sentiment that played a role in the growing tension between him and Tom Brady. Belichick would surely welcome the question marks at quarterback, and he’d probably push against the instinct to invest significant draft or free agency capital into the position.
While it’s easy to assume that one of the most accomplished head coaches of all time would be atop the Falcons wish list, that hasn’t stopped the organization from eyeing other candidates for their vacancy. Belichick is now the 10th official candidate for the role, joining a growing list that includes:
- Brian Callahan, offensive coordinator (Bengals): Interviewed 1/13
- Ejiro Evero, defensive coordinator (Panthers): Interviewed 1/14
- Aaron Glenn, defensive coordinator (Lions): Interview requested
- Ben Johnson, offensive coordinator (Lions): Interview requested
- Mike Macdonald, defensive coordinator (Ravens): Interviewed 1/12
- Raheem Morris, defensive coordinator (Rams): Interview requested
- Antonio Pierce, interim head coach (Raiders): Interview requested
- Bobby Slowik, offensive coordinator (Texans): Interview requested
- Anthony Weaver, defensive line coach (Ravens): Interviewed 1/14
- Steve Wilks, defensive coordinator (49ers): Interviewed 1/13
Hire Bill
Fix Defense
Trade up from #8 to #1
Select Caleb
Hire OC Josh McDaniels
Win Division
March into the playoffs
Super Bowl Champs 2024
lol
Whatever your smoking spread some around!! lol
LOL Yeah!
To quote Van Halen :
Everybody Wants Some … I Want Some Too!
Could definitely be a 2026 Super Bowl contender, but 2024 is probably pushing it.
Get ready for the Hoodies!
“Fix defense”
You make it sound so easy!
Then you woke up? Lol
Bears took the Panthers #1 wr when they traded with them…they are not dumb so they would ask Falcons for a top weapon or defender.
“Select Caleb”? Will Bill allow Caleb to cry in his arms after a loss?
I’m thinking Jerry Jones will have something to say about your plan.
Is Bill actually going to answer pointed questions or just say “we’re on to Cincinnati” ?
I don’t see Bill B as a Falcon
It woukd be strange to me
Plus, he is an outdoor man, i can’t see him going to a Domed Stadium
Yeah, but he’s older now…blood doesn’t circulate as well as it used to. The cutoff hoodie will suffice in the dome, but if you notice, (see pic) he was no longer wearing it in the climes of NE.
You might be right
Although, I just can’t see him with the Falcons
“Hi, Bill… so, start off by telling us a little about yourself… why do you see yourself as the best candidate for this position?”
Places rings on table. Says nothing.
“How is Tom these days?”
and Gronk? Could we swing a reunion?
Or just glares at interviewer, says nothing.
Can you imagine the interview…
Aurther Blank: Hey Bill, would you like to see our facilities and get some dinner?
Bill Belichick: Yeah welmmm….uunnnlmmllluulll
AB: Excellent….. So what would it take to get you to win #357 in Atlanta?
BB: Yeah Welmmmm…mminnillk… dallanoinl..Cowlnnnlllnl…
AB: Thank you, so how do you see the future of the NFL and the Falcons?
BB: Yeah So mmmiilllnnnh.. Kyle Pitts, and, uummm, Jake Mathews,, and yeah uumm Drake London, well … yeah Tyler Allgeier so, uummmmnnn all keys to yeah….
Thank you
This is like Michael Jordan having to try out for a team after leaving the Bulls. What on earth do you expect to find out in an interview that you couldn’t and shouldn’t already know? What a waste of time.
The Rooney rule makes it so you can’t just hire someone. You have to consider other options including minorities first and then you can hire the white guy you were going to hire all along. Skip a step and risk penalties and public shaming if your white guy doesn’t provide instant results.
Don’t blame the Rooney rule, most of these teams interview guys like Kafka, Kellen Moore, Caneles(1 year calling plays), Frank Smith from Fins does not call plays.
I guess we found the liberal in the room.
and we found the guy that would hire Joe Judge, Brandon Staley, Matt Rhule, Matt Patricia. Like who cares about politics, do you keep hiring Josh McDaniels you will figure it out at some point…
Technically wrong, you responded with comments about the Rooney Rule which has nothing to do with my comment about interviewing Bill Belichik. He’s not a minority that they’re required to interview and there’s little to nothing that Atlanta could learn from that interview, it’s just a charade and grand waste of time. But thanks for your off topic and ignorant response.
Teams are mandated to interview a minority option, so if you don’t even bother interviewing Belichick and then hire him, that’s an instant lawsuit for not giving whichever token person you interviewed a chance. If you don’t see that, then I can’t help you.
The white guy is more qualified than the 10 candidates mentioned in the article as interviewed or requested to be interviewed. The list contains non Caucasians as well as Caucasians. Instant results are rare in the national football league my friend, even with a franchise quarterback and a Hall of fame head coach.
Cowboys should get Belichik
Bill welcome to Philly
I suppose a lot of this comes down to how much you believe the talk from more professional speculators about the Dallas possibility…
How much time does Belichick want to spend building a new team in a new city? Does he want something with more pieces in place, albeit in a stronger division? Or would he rather start completely over in his image in a weak division? The latter would, you think, be more preferable for someone who likes control and particularity, but it would take any coach at least two years at the minimum to make Atlanta a contender. In Atlanta, however, you don’t have the owner weighing in nearly as much on everyday decisions in his GM capacity. Despite common sentiment, Jerry Jones has mostly built good teams in Dallas. In accordance with common sentiment, Jerry ultimately does what Jerry wants. You’d think that that alone would be enough to indicate that he and Belichick wouldn’t mesh perfectly.
This is excluding other teams, of course, like the Chargers (who have Belichick’s biggest knock from the last few years in place, and really just need defensive standards in place). To me, the main thing keeping Atlanta from being the best opening right now for Belichick is the time that he’d have to take to build the roster. Does he want to compete for a championship at age 75? Knowing Belichick, however, he’d probably want to do a rebuild on any team that he joins, especially on defense. Perhaps it’s best to do that on a team without clear answers at a lot of positions, after all.
This teams window is now so it does make sense. Team has a strong 5 year window.. If Belichick comes in they would need a more established quarterback. Cousins, Wilson, fields or they draft a qb and bring in a minshew, Flacco, tannehill, . The division is easy to win it’s one of the reasons Brady chose the bucs
He’ll be approaching the age of the top presidential candidates by then, so Atlanta could land him by offering a Hoverround.
Several of the QBs you mention suck. Fields is not “established” and would likely flounder under BB, Flacco is old/washed. Tannehill is an expensive china doll.
♫ He’s leavin’ (Leavin’)
On that midnight train to Georgia (Leavin’ on that midnight train)
Mm, yes
Said he’s goin’ back (Goin’ back to find)
To a simpler place and time ♫
*dancing in step in background*
“Goin’ back to find”
NFL should make the potential new HC hires take wonderlic tests n leak the scores. Liven things up a bit.
It would be so weird but I’d take anything at this point.
I’d be excited to know BB, interviewed for the H.C gig ..I don’t think he’s gonna go full tour with every team that needs a coach.. He’s only gonna interview with the few jobs he’d actually take ..
Heard Bill didn’t respond to any questions during the interview.
