The Eagles’ chances of winning the NFC East were dealt a major blow on Sunday when they suffered an upset loss to the Cardinals. Philadelphia also has a notable injury situation to monitor ahead of Week 18 and the start of the postseason.
Wideout DeVonta Smith was in a walking boot when exiting yesterday’s game while dealing with what was initially determined as a high ankle sprain. While confirming the nature of the injury, head coach Nick Sirianni also said Smith is still wearing a walking boot and using crutches. No firm declarations have been made either way with respect to his game status, but that development certainly does not bode well.
Unless the Cowboys fail to beat the Commanders during the final day of regular season play, the Eagles will be locked into the fifth seed in the NFC playoff bracket. As a result, Sirianni admitted decisions will need to be made regarding whether or not the team’s starters should be rested. Smith’s central nature to the Eagles’ passing attack qualifies him as a key player for their playoff matchup, so a cautious approach would come as little surprise.
Still, missing the former Heisman winner would deal a blow to Philadelphia’s offense in the event the team opted to play its starters against the Giants on Sunday. Smith has had another impressive season working in tandem with A.J. Brown, posting a strong statline (81-1,066-7). New career highs in yards and touchdowns could be within reach if he were to play, but Sirianni said “we’ll see” when asked about the 25-year-old’s ability to suit up (h/t Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports).
A win over New York would keep Philadelphia in contention for the No. 2 seed in the conference; it would also help generate momentum heading into the postseason for a team which has lost four of its last five games. The defending NFC champions have experienced signficant issues on the defensive side of the ball in recent weeks in particular, but their offense would be notably shorthanded in the postseason if Smith were unable to play. His status will be worth watching over the coming days.
Wheels are coming off for the Eagles
Time to get out and PUSH.
Wheels? Whole darn car exploded.
This is the result of a playbook that is 75% WR screens. It’s all we freakin run and it’s disgusting. Let’s run behind a 160 lb WR for 3-4 yards instead of just running behind the best offensive line in football and get more yards.
I still read your OC should be a HC candidate this cycle, why?
During College bowl games today ESPN or Fox on the ticker tape reported Devonta Smith with a “Mid- Ankle Sprain”…I thought that was curious, never heard of the dreaded Mid-Ankle sprain lol
Hope #6 is ok but this team and coach have been exposed as frauds.
Nick Sirianni has had a brain fade not unlike those Andy Reid often had in Philly. WTF would the Eagles want to rest regulars? Philly can’t afford to do so in Week 18 cos their game and the Dallas game both start at the same time. And Dallas controls its destiny for the NFC East.
Now that the number 1 seed is out of reach I think the Eagles are better off in the 5th seed rather than the 2nd. Look at the competition for the Eagles in the 2nd seed: LAR, SEA, or GB. Those are tougher teams than the sorry as* teams coming out of the NFC South. The Bucs, Saints or Falcons would be much easier opponents in the Wild Car game in my personal opinion. Yes the home field advantage would be great for philly but Super Bowl teams can win on the road.
Time to find out.
the league is just use to their playbook now and how to stop it . if u don’t change things up each year the league will catch on and it makes things harder for u to win . I am happy their wheels fell off though if I’m being honest
Some of the very best defensive players with the exception of the defensive backs and this team is rudderless on defense. Almost never blitz. The worst stat yesterday was the cards not punting once. Both O and D coordinators need to be fired after the season.
This is the icing on a layer cake of problems with the Eagles starting with Siriani’s incompetence. His O and D coordinators are terrible regardless of injuries or talent level dealt. The play calling and time management are horrific. Yesterdays game was lost in the second half when a timeout was called rather than an audible made with 10:26 left on the clock. Bad decision by Jaylen Hurts too bc the league has the book on him. But coming out of the timeout to run a wr screen with the wr covered by 3 guys and waste a play was worse than taking a delay of game. Siriani is a little better than Chip Kelly, not as good as Doug Pederson, almost as bad as Rich Kotite. His act is old, the local media need to hold him accountable bc he looks like a confused idiot each time he doesn’t adjust to turmoil or in game challenges. I’d fire him at the end of the season which will be after the playoffs round 1. He’s not going to change, he will only get worse and if he was a good head coach could have righted the ship when his coordinators came up short. Jeffrey and Howie need to wake up. I’d go get Mike Tomlin if he becomes available. Eagles are my team but I’m keeping it real and have seen the franchise fail too much when they hold on to coaches and players for too long. Siriani lost the locker room too. And in todays NFL when you lose the ability to connect and motivate millionaires, it’s over regardless of what talent a roster has.
