Mike McCarthy will be sticking around Dallas for the 2024 season, but he’ll do so on an expiring deal. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cowboys are not expected to extend McCarthy before the start of the 2024 campaign. The Cowboys head coach is heading into the final year of his contract.

Following another frustrating playoff exit, there were many pundits who speculated that McCarthy would be the scapegoat. Instead, owner Jerry Jones gave his head coach a vote of confidence and definitively stated that McCarthy would be back with the Cowboys in 2024. An extension would have obviously been a much louder affirmation, and while McCarthy will temporarily keep his job, he’ll head into the 2024 season with lame-duck status.
While many head coaches and front offices try to avoid these lame-duck situations, Schefter notes that Jones is thinking differently. The owner believes McCarthy will be “challenged in a different way” with an expiring deal, and he’s hoping the pressure will “bring out the best” in his head coach.
This also isn’t an unprecedented move by the Cowboys organization. Schefter points out that Jones twice had McCarthy’s predecessor, Jason Garrett, coach on the final year of his contract. The first time around, the Cowboys went 12-4 and earned Garrett a new five-year deal. Following the second instance, the Cowboys went 8-8 and Garrett wasn’t re-signed, leading to McCarthy’s hiring.
While McCarthy has made it clear that his contract status won’t be a distraction, sources told Schefter that it could have an impact on the rest of his staff. Since McCarthy’s future in Dallas is uncertain, the head coach may have a tough time filling openings on his staff. Further, some sources questioned how Cowboys players will react to McCarthy’s status if the Cowboys go through a rough stretch in 2024.
The Cowboys have finished with 12 wins in each of the past three seasons, but they only have a single playoff win over that span. The Cowboys haven’t advanced past the divisional round of the playoffs since the last time they won the Super Bowl in 1995.
Should be unemployed.
Jimmy Johnson did a great job overcoming and masking Jerry Jones’ utter incompetence.
And was rewarded with a pink slip.
Because Jerry Jones is utterly incompetent.
No doubt the “so, when will your coach be fired?” atmosphere will be conducive to winning. Save a few bucks by making your coach a lame duck…pure genius.
A billionaire “utterly incompetent”…..this has got to be done of the dumbest things ever posted. You do realize he built 3 SB winning teams
“Jimmy Johnson did a great job overcoming and masking Jerry Jones’ utter incompetence.” <——– Ahem.
And one would have to be gaping mouth stooge to buy the notion that money = brains. But, OK. Plenty of those. Not saying you are "done of" those, though.
What he means is, that you can’t, through your own efforts, become a billionaire by being incompetent. But talking football, you have a point.
30 years ago…. He isn’t utterly incompetent. The game has just evolved past him.
Extend him? He should go to church every day and thank God that he’s even back for next year after that last debacle. Extend him? ROTFLMAO
Jimmy Johnson built the 90s Cowboys, not Jerry Jones. Even though Jerry loves to take credit for it. Jones did nothing but write the checks hoss. Jimmy was the one who got the haul of draft picks from the H. Walker trade that built that dynasty. NOT Jerry Jones!
“Not being able to finish” and “utterly incompetent” have a lot of ground between them. Jones obviously isn’t utterly incompetent. The Cowboys are almost always in the playoff mix, and rarely are out of contention, usually having good teams and good records. McCarthy is the same way-good records, playoff contention, the like. The problem, also obvious, is that they can’t seem to finish.
People like to get super emotional about Jones and the Cowboys, as it’s still the 1990s, which I don’t understand. As an outside observer, it’s very obvious to me that they are usually pretty good, but just miss the ability to climb the precipice in terms of team success.
In this case, we must remember that Mike McCarthy does have a ring, as old as far away as it is, and has an excellent win loss record to go along with it. I actually agree that he is not good enough to put a team over the top, but we have to consider the other side of it: who is out there that is a for sure upgrade? I’m certain that there is room to improve, but I’m also certain that it is not much room. The Cowboys should and will likely use this year to find out where that upgrade is. If McCarthy succeeds, so be it, that’s what they wanted to begin with. If he does not, they hopefully will have a target in mind to replace him. They are doing the opposite of repeating their mistake with Johnson’s knee jerk firing for emotional reasons.
I have to believe Shanahan gave LaFleur a blueprint; something about how to exploit Dan Quinn. That’s not on Jerruh…
(Now Kyle will send the Packers home this weekend.)
Jerry Jones is the Mike Tomlin of owners
Incompetent is prob a little strong. Guy appears to have done well for himself but the team would prob be better served removing himself and his kids (who have accomplished nothing) a bit from the biz. Ego obviously got in the way in Dallas preventing further success.
Jimmy left on his own
Just unequivocal proof that the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd priority for Jerry Jones isn’t winning a superbowl.
Winning another super bowl
He has won a few, though not recently
Either fire McCarthy and hire Jon Gruden and thumb your nose at the Rooney Rule
Or hire Jon Gruden as the Offensive Coordinator which might be a better option
And keep the peace
Quite frankly, I think McCarthy has done a good job and if you fire him now, the Cowboys are behind the Eight Ball in the hiring and interviewing Process
Gruden!? SMH…
Could McCarthy just walk Away ? If he’s a lame duck and seek a new job ? Carolina ? Titans?
Is Jerry going into the season w/ a lame duck HC & QB? He really needs to start over at both positions, but he’s old himself.
I agree with this. They both have had their opportunities and both disappear in big meaningful games. Dallas was as unprepared for that game as I have ever seen a team in the playoffs. What a joke. Then no adjustments were made during the game on either side of the ball. Someone has to be held accountable. That falls directly on the coaches. Quinn too. I think we get caught up in his coaching abilities. But his defense got blown out on multiple occasions with no adjustments made. Maybe he’s not the reason for the defense’s success. Maybe it’s the actual talent. By Jerry keeping Mike this tells the world that Mikes not being held accountable for that terrible performance. But Jerry is holding himself accountable instead. A decision was made. In the fans eyes it was the wrong one. I guess next year will tell the tale. Me personally I sign and trade Dak. Love the guy and love the regular season’s performances. But hate the big game clutch moment Dak. He’s never got the job done after multiple opportunities. It’s time to move on.
It’s not the fault of the GM who hasn’t won a ring in almost 30 years, that’s for sure. Sticking by a guy who should be fired but telling him he’ll be fired next season is a classic dumbass move by an individual who has zero self reflection. Jerry Jones: go away.
I think Jerry’s logic here might be a bit flawed. We’ve certainly seen players respond with a strong season when in a contract year but a HC has a lot more on his plate with several things outside his control.
Either he is your HC n u back em fully or u don’t. Now he’s lame duck. Bad look on bad situation.
Cowboys are good at two things. Making money and early playoff exits. Enuf said.
Prescott is the problem.
Jerry has zero sense of urgency. He’s getting weak as he’s getting older. It’s a shame that Jerry doesn’t care anymore. Move on from Dak and trade Parsons in a Herchel Walker type deal. The roster needs some changes and they keep the same players not helping. The Cowboys are on a Hamster wheel going no where.
