The 2023 season has been a signficant step back for the Giants compared to their first year under general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. It would come as a surprise if either were to be let go at the end of the year, however, a sentiment which was recently confirmed by the former’s public remarks.
Schoen’s press conference earlier this week stated owners John Mara and Steve Tisch were aware of the long-term requirements of a sustainable rebuild given the roster and cap situation he inherited from the Dave Gettleman era. As Schoen said in no uncertain terms, and as Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports reports, a change at neither the GM or HC spots is anticipated to take place.
“Yeah, absolutely. They’re on board with it,” Schoen said, via Vacchiano, of New York’s owners regarding a multi-year rebuild. “As much as it hurts to go through this, there are a lot of young players that are getting valuable experience. Another offseason, another draft, we will continue to build it… The fact that John Mara is here on a daily basis, we can explain the ‘why’ — why we’re doing things, how we’re going to do them. They’re in the loop and they’re on board.”
The Giants have been known to move on quickly from coaches, with Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur and Joe Judge each being let go late in their second seasons with the team. Daboll is now in that territory, and the 2022 Coach of the Year has been the subject of widespread criticism as the Giants have gone 4-8 this campaign. Struggles on offense both before and after quarterback Daniel Jones‘ ACL tear, as well as reported tension with defensive coordinator Don Martindale have led to questions about Daboll’s job security. He appears to be in the clear for now, however.
“It takes time, takes a couple of offseasons, it takes a few drafts to build it the right way,” Schoen added. “Trust me, it hurts when you lose and you’re 4-8… But you don’t want to lose sight of the big picture and the proper way to build a roster.”
The Giants are currently slated to have the No. 6 pick in the 2024 draft, a selection which could allow them to add a Jones successor. Having just inked the 26-year-old to a $160MM extension last year, though, New York could elect to go in a number of different directions during the draft. Regardless of how the Giants proceed, the team’s top decision-makers will be operating with assurances about their job security for the time being.
That’s good that they’re on board, because that’s what they have ahead of them regardless of who’s on board.
lol exactly
As always, the Giants will continue to get a free ride from the NYC tabloids that are on life support.
Is there any way to rescind a “Coach of the Year” honor? Brian Daboll got the award last term only because (1) New York and (2) NFC East.
I don’t know where this”free ride” is that you’re alluding to. I don’t think that many people are complementary of Daboll right now.
What would you prefer be said?
What “free ride” are you referring to? I read/listen daily and in fact it’s quite the opposite.
A couple of podcasts have indicated the Daboll is universally hated by his own coaching staff. Sort of sounds like the same situation that went on in Miami with Brian Flores before he was let go.
Exactly who’s podcasts are saying that…..haven’t heard the same…anytime a team gets smacked around the way this season has gone for the G-Men, rumors always abound regarding the HC and his staff…..rumors are just that…rumors….

I have doubts to those claims as well. His fellow coaches in Buffalo had nothing but praise for Daboll over the years and, unless he flipped a switch, I assume most of this is just NY tabloid fodder. Buffalo fans would be happy to take him back.
I buy the reports, but it’s a case where the same personality type plays differently in different situations. When you’re winning, and everything is good, it’s a lot easier to tolerate a personality like Daboll. When you’re losing, not so much. That’s when “tough coaching” starts to wear thin.
Reports are slang for “idiot sports guys trying to get attention and drive ratings.”
Rumors are rumors. The media needs something to do to earn a living lol. The bigger question is: why not realignment of divisions and conferences? For Dallas to still be playing east coast teams instead of teams in their own time zone boggles the mind.
Because NFL has a lifelong infatuation with “rivalries” (quotes to emphasize even if they have to manufacturer and/or sustain them)
KC in the West?
Indianapolis in the South?
Dallas in the East?
Then again, why have:
NYJ in NFC & NYG in AFC yet CLE & CIN not only in the same Conference but the same Division?
Probably the same reason for the 2023 brain fart of so many televised CHI games
meh, I can’t call it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
lol
Before the last re-alignment in the early 2000’s they floated the idea of divisions by geographic location, like Baltimore, Washington, Pitt and Philly would be one division, Jets, Giants, Bills, Pats would be another…but fans objected.
Move Miami to south Baltimore to east and Indy to north for better and more logical alignment.
On one hand I agree, but on the other, there are certain rivalries that are better than others, simply put. Pittsburgh-Baltimore is a rivalry that I would never want to see leave. It’s one of the best rivalries in the NFL, up there with Green Bay-Chicago, Dallas-New York, and San Fran-Seattle. Most rivalries, I think, can be replaced over time. It’d be tough, though, to change anything about the AFC North at all. However, there are some untapped gems, in my mind. The New York City teams and L.A. teams could be potentially interesting (though L.A. has an obvious fan disadvantage), and the Texas teams could begin an interesting rivalry.
There are a couple of past old school rivalries that were pretty great, though, that gone by the wayside. Dallas-San Fran and Denver-Cleveland come to mind. Neither are relevant in terms of a geographical realignment, of course. Dallas-Kansas City, though, could be a good example for that.
Rivalries can be maintained within in the same conference. I don’t think division would negatively impact real/historic rivalries like Steelers/Browns or Giants/Cowboys/Niners
You have a point that rivalries would be maintained by fans who lived through them, or in geographically close areas (like Pittsburgh-Philadelphia today), but I do think that the playing twice a year is really what feeds them. If the NFL did some sort of pseudo-college like exception, where teams pick one non-division team to be a permanent rival like some colleges do (Clemson-South Carolina, or Georgia-Georgia Tech, for instance), I think that that could have spectacular results. Obviously, not every team has to do it necessarily (not sure who, for example, the Cardinals would pick), but it could be an interesting way for non-division rivalries to survive and also give more marketing opportunities for the teams themselves.
The realignment would still work though, all the rivalries you suggest would remain except Dallas Philly which, while in different divisions, could still play each other during the season they just wouldn’t be in division.
I’d like to see them just play in the two conference. Eliminate divisions and take the best records for the playoffs. That’s just me though.
Next season is year 3 of the ‘rebuild’ better win.
I get what you’re saying, arty, but realistically this team seems at two years away from any meaningful contention to me, no matter who is coaching/running it. Jones has missed so much time this year that whatever positives could have arisen for his development or acclimation are pretty much dead until next year, and all that we’ve seen from the rest of the skill positions seems to be that more investment is needed. It just doesn’t look like “the guys” are in place yet. There are some young positives going forward, like Thibodeaux, but this team is more than a year away I think from contending. Fixing that offensive line should be absolutely the number one priority, to start.
The biggest problem of any rebuild is the time line to get it done. As an example, everyone is screaming for the HC & GM of the Bears to go because they continually lose. Yet they are only in year 2 of that rebuild. From what I read (being fans, media, ‘insiders’ etc.), 70%+ want at least a new HC. Then the next ‘rebuild’ starts. New HC’s need their players to run their system.
Ownership is just an impatient as the fans are which adds to the pressure level. Texans x2, Cards, Panthers all come to mind recently of 1 and done HC’s. Sometimes in the middle of the 1st season. Year and half for the Raiders duo before they were sent packing.
The Giants biggest problem is they let a 9-7 record with many 1 score games go their way made them believe the team was set and they only needed to add/tweak the roster rather than start from scratch. That’s why this season stings so bad, everyone was expecting a +.500 record, not a top 5 pick.
The New York sports market is probably the most competitive one in America. It’s absurd for the Giants to tell fans that they might be able to field a team worth watching in another few years. Fans will simply laugh and go watch the Rangers (best points percentage in the NHL at the moment) play.
So in other words Schoen is blaming Gettlemen for his own inept contract renogiations (with Barkley and Jones) and his poor 2023 roster construction (a team with 0 pro-caliber wide receivers)?
Sorry dude, but the Giants’ record last year was a strength of schedule mirage and you basically whiffed on making any impactful improvements.
I agree with some of the things you stated, and disagree with others. FirsT Schoen did blow the Jones contract situation. He bid against himself to give Jones that $40mm average annual value contract. I don’t think there would have been any teams beating his door down to get that contract (maybe in the high $20’s AAV at the most). But the contract does seem to be structured to have an out after 2 years in case Jones doesn’t take a leap forward (hint: he didn’t). As for Barkley, the fault laid almost exclusively on his agent (who never negotiated an NFL contract before and is a ‘family’ friend) who turned down everything that was offered and didn’t understand the deadline because of his franchise tag.
Also, Schoen inherited a mess of a roster and salary cap situation from Gettleman. Look at the Galloday, Williams, Jackson and even Solder contracts, to name a few. They hamstrung the team with high numbers and then high dead cap hits. Next year should be better in terms of cap management.
It’ll take a few years to purge the team of the mess Gettleman made in terms of roster, cap usage, and culture. 2 of those years have been used, so I would say a maximum of 2 more are needed. That will give Schoen 4 years of drafting and free agency to redo the roster.
As for no pro caliber wide receivers? That’s not true. Robinson, Hyatt and Waller (he’s really a wideout playing TE) are gonna be quality wr’s for them. But they do need another in this upcoming draft or FA.
Although I do agree last year was a mirage. It was due to a number of factors, from luck, coaching, strength of schedule to players over performing and surprising teams. This year teams are ready for them and it shows.
Unfortunately, it’s going to take another 2 drafts and FA periods to truly see what Schoen can build.
“2052 Is Gonna Be Our Year !”
Just waiting for a QB playing grandson of Eli Manning to come along in the draft.
Then we can watch Eli and Peyton discuss him on the Manning cast!
I used to believe people are not a stupid as they sound. Given “our” so-called “president”, I now understand I was wrong. So, CLEARLY, the Giants lost key personnel during the last off season and did NOT dig a financial hole to replace them. That MEANS, everyone understood what was most likely to happen. For SOME REASON, the MEDIA wants to do a Darryl Strawberry on the current management team (again). You 10s of millions of people who support teams that are happy with 2nd place, talk to the hand.
Dumb Sports Fan + Retro Freak + MAGA = Yahtzee!
Rebuild is overused in all sports. They didn’t win anything recently or go deep in the playoffs since Eli. It’s more of a retry than rebuild.
@johnmac94
Given your comments “I used to believe people are not a stupid as they sound. Given “our” so-called “president. I now understand I was wrong.”
You’re correct, you are wrong and people like you are as stupid as they sound.
But hey, keep living in the alternate reality bubble and drinking the cult kool aid.
NYG need more pass rushers possibly at #6. They won with Strahan, Tuck and OSI being relentless
