The Jets continue to see struggles at the quarterback position. Hours after hearing that Aaron Rodgers would likely not work his way back to a starting role this season, the situation at the position became even more dire as third-string starter Tim Boyle was benched in today’s loss to the Falcons in favor of veteran Trevor Siemian. The team is currently undecided on whether or not the switch will be permanent going into next week, per Josh Alper of NBC Sports.
New York was trailing Atlanta early in the second half, and Boyle had completed just over half of his passes for 148 yards in what was a fairly uninspiring performance. When Boyle threw an ill-advised pass that ended up in the hands of an over-the-top safety, head coach Robert Saleh put the 29-year-old on the bench, sending in Siemian, the recent journeyman.
Siemian, who despite playing for four different teams has started a game in each of the past five years, didn’t fare much better than Boyle against Atlanta. While Saleh hoped the move would spark the offense, Siemian failed to lead the team to any points, completing only 5 of his 13 pass attempts for 66 yards. He also fumbled the ball three times, losing one to the opposing defense.
With that failed experiment, Saleh has yet to make a decision on what the plan will be next week. Asked if benched former starter Zach Wilson could make a return to the first team, Saleh replied that Wilson is “always in consideration.” With Rodgers not likely to return, Saleh will need to figure something out with the options available to him.
Here are a few more rumors coming out of East Rutherford:
- Defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey made his season debut today after being a standard gameday elevation from the practice squad. Unfortunately, that’s where his 2023 campaign will end. In today’s loss, Winfrey suffered a “really bad” foot injury that Saleh proclaimed would leave him done for the season, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.
- Also sidelined in the loss were veteran tight end C.J. Uzomah and undrafted rookie wide receiver Jason Brownlee. Per Cimini, Uzomah suffered a sprained MCL and Brownlee left the game with an ankle injury. Taking away offensive weapons from the Jets’ arsenal surely doesn’t help the team’s struggles at quarterback.
NYJ GM needs to be fired for having that QB room. Didn’t even try to improve the depth, bought in a 40 year old playing a full season.
Eh I’d give them 1 full season together with Rodgers before doing that.
You gotta remember it takes two to sign a contract.
Would Jets have landed Andy Dalton? No he went to CAR hoping to start.
Would they have landed Heinicke? No he went to ATL for a chance to play
Would they have signed Minshew? Probably not he followed his former philly OC to indy
Brisett and Bridgewater were the only real options. But Brisett went to WAS probably hoping to play if Howell regressed and Bridgewater has his own injury concerns.
But Jets should definitely get a better backup bq. I think Davis Mills should be the guy. Davis and a 7th for a 6th. He’s the backup now behind Stroud. Texans can just sign someone or draft a late round guy next year. Michael Pratt or Sam Hartman
The Jets should address their offensive line and weapons early in the draft. They need to use their first rounder either on a top tackle or the top wide receiver, preferably the tackle. They could grab a developmental QB on day 2 or 3, like Taulia Tagavailoa. I believe he broke Boomer’s [or Painter’s, I think] records at Maryland.
Jets already traded their 7th, so it would have to be a future pick. We only have a 1st, 3rd, 4th, 4th, and 6th.
I think too often we tend to blame poor offensive performance solely on the QB. The more games I watch this season, the more sloppy play I see on the offensive side of the ball.
NFL offenses have always been more reliant on timing, technique, and execution than their defensive counterparts. I think part of what we’re seeing in many cases of stalled QB development is a collective unit that isn’t willing to invest the time and effort required to develop cohesion or a coaching staff that isn’t able to task them with doing so.
I think Covid played a big part in the overall decline of offensive performance. It created a “new normal” where players spent less time in the building doing the classroom and film room work needed for cohesive offensive performance.
Obviously some coaches are still able to get the buy in needed from players. But I’d be willing to bet that several struggling coaches are quietly lamenting the overall change in attitude from players compared to just 5-10 years ago.
You really have to question the mental ability of a GM and/or Head coach that thought Tim Boyle could win an NFL game.
Or maybe they want a higher draft pick. They’re not making the playoffs, so they might as well throw in the towel without being too obvious.
Yep. They might be trying to avoid any useless late season wins like the Falcons always come up with. They have absolutely killed their drafting positions with useless late season wins over the years, and they are doing it again this year.
The good news for Falcons fans is that even if we keep winning our draft position won’t get much worse at this point. We were in the top 8 two weeks ago, and we are now sitting at 16 with odds of winning the Super Bowl somewhat worse than winning the lottery or getting hit by lightning.
For Jets fans, just hope you don’t pull a 2019 version of the Falcons, who won their last four games and dropped from 3rd overall pick to 16th. That is just one season of many where they effed up and won useless games down the stretch, typically with a coach trying desperately to hold onto his job while dooming the franchise.
The Falcons would rebuild for more successfully if the NFL would lock in draft order about week 12 or so. Seriously. And I know it’s wrong to root for your team to lose, but until the NFL alters the way the draft works, anyone who doesn’t have a legit shot to win it all should probably embark on a tanking and cap reduction strategy.
Don’t kid yourself, the Jets always seem to find wins in the least beneficial times as well. That’s how we lost Lawrence and got stuck with Wilson
Flacco? Why not circle back to Joe Flacco? He’s not exactly the most inspiring choice but he was with the team last year and although there is a different offensive system, Flacco would have provided some familiarity at least. Plus, he once was a winner in the league. 22-34-254-2-1 is not great by any stretch of the imagination but Wilson was never anywhere close to that.
He might have been enough to keep the team afloat and provide some hope. They got nothing for the rest of the season now.
What did he win, 2 games in 3 years with the Jets? That wasn’t an option
Exactly. Joe would have at least kept Jets in the playoff hunt. Browns believe in him enough to start yesterday.
Jets should start over without the current GM and Saleh.
Poor coach in thinking the QB behind Rodgers were any good, especially since he’s 40.
Get rid of the GM and the head coach but not the OC or the OL coach?
Get rid of both of them too. Jets should of went after Lamar in last off-season. At least he has about 10 years left, not 1 like Rodgers. It would have cost Jets a boatload to get Lamar and he’s the most electric player in NFL. Jets are major disappointment since Rex Ryan.
The QB conversation was something that was very obvious to everyone….in week 1. (Well, except one weird guy Jet fan on here)
Im sure the team felt the same.
It doesn’t matter who the QB in NY is, the second the ball is snapped the QB is under pressure. The O-line is so bad no one could play QB effectively.
THIS!!
Never thought I’d make a statement supporting Flacco but his performance yesterday without Amari & Chubb has to trigger the “What If?” scenario of Wilson & Hall … tempered by the reality of the Jets’ paper mache O-line.
Whether it’s an obvious scripted partyline or not, Saleh’s continued support of Zach solidified his sacrificial lamb status. That kid is barely worth being a “clipboard holder” and he’s never proven otherwise. Too small. Too arrogant. Too unteachable. Stop throwing time behind a bonehead draft choice. Cut your losses.
Then again, building an O-line AFTER signing a 40 year old QB is supremely stupid
