Tim Boyle is getting at least one more start for the Jets. Coach Robert Saleh told reporters this morning that the backup QB will be under center next weekend against the Falcons.
“Yeah, we’re giving Timmy a chance to roll again next week,” Saleh said (via ESPN’s Rich Cimini).
It wasn’t a great showing for Boyle yesterday in his first start of the season. While the 29-year-old completed a respectable 71.1 percent of his passes, he also tossed a pair of interceptions and had a pair of fumbles. The loss to the Dolphins dropped Boyle to 0-4 as a starter in his career, with the other three losses coming with the Lions in 2021.
If Boyle is replaced, the Jets would likely turn to newly-named QB2 Trevor Siemian. The veteran was signed to the Jets active roster earlier this week as the team reworked their depth chart, a shakeup that saw Zach Wilson get demoted to the third spot on the depth chart. At this point, it seems unlikely that the Jets would turn back to the former second-overall pick, meaning Boyle or Siemian should get the bulk of the snaps at the position.
Of course, Aaron Rodgers has continued to keep the door open regarding a late-season return. However, thanks to yesterday’s loss, the Jets are now armed with the third-worst record in the AFC. Even with a future Hall of Fame QB back in the lineup, it’s unlikely they’d have enough time to insert themselves into the playoff picture.
Speaking of, that Jets loss also means the team would be eyeing a top-10 pick if the season ended today. Even though the organization is quickly climbing into “QB territory” on the draft board, Cimini says it would be a stunner if the front office chose a quarterback in the upcoming draft. The team still plans to roll with Rodgers in 2024, so any move will likely revolve around their win-now mentality.
Rearranging deck chairs on the titanic
Pretty much the right analogy for the mess this year. It was great for them to land AR, but no OL, what’s the point.
The GM has to go. Went into the season with those ‘backup QB’ options plus no o-line for Aaron?
I agree on backup QB. Especially when they could’ve gotten someone like Brissett from Washington for sure, or even make a run at Jameis or someone. Wentz was out there forever. Even if you didn’t start the season with a good backup, they had plenty of time to address it once Rodgers went down on drive 1 of the season.
But I do think the GM can’t take all of the blame. Rodgers demanding they sign his whole posse, including $44 million on Lazard handicaps his ability to fill out the gaps on the OL
“completed a respectable 71.1 percent of his passes,”
I don’t have the exact stats handy but watching the game, most of his passes seemed like they were instant passes and/or checkdowns, ie within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. He couldn’t throw it downfield. It was all dinks and dunks. And most of his completions were in garbage time in the fourth quarter when the Dolphins were giving him stuff underneath.
He was a disaster. Hilarious that the Jets are sticking with him.
The one time Boyle really went deep on Black Friday, it was the Hail Mary that morphed into a 99-yard pick-6 for Miami. Mike “It’s All About The Quarterback” Lupica couldn’t deviate from his Human Wikipedia act to figure that out.
FWIW Boyle is getting his next start vs. an Atlanta team that is alive in the less-than-appealing NFC South.
As a Jets fan, who would you rather see as QB? Wilson, Boyle, or Semien?
Doesn’t really matter at this point. Season is over for the Jets.
Right, but which guy commands a tank better?
Dust off Vinny Testaverde
try and sign Josh Dobbs in the off season,…trade Rodgers even if u have to eat half his salary. Rodgers is the real nightmare …. Obviously Boyle is a joke.. May as well keep playing Wilson.
Pass.
If anything jets get a top 5 pick they should dangle it to the raiders for adams. Top 5 pick and lazards contract for adams. Im sure thered be more to discuss in the deal but pairing adams with wilson and using money to fix the oline would be a better bet. Oh and sign a decent backup qb.
Oh you mean like literally almost every QB in every game as far as most passes being short throws?
Yeah they’re tanking lmao. Draft Penix or Maye to sit behind Roger for a year and build an O Line. I get it. Risky but I get it
They should not pick another QB with a high pick. It has not worked out well for them. They need to go o-line with a high pick. I wanted Sewell when they took Zach.
They have no idea how to develop QB’s they draft high in the last 50 years Pennington maybe being the exception. Erin is gonna get cremated behind that line if he thinks he’s coming back later this year
Penix would help. Rogers has 1-2 good years left max. Penix with his talent behind/mentored by a hall of famer and then start in 2025 would be a smart move
3rd time in the last 7 years is the charm huh
Personally id trade out of top 5 pick back into the 20s, get some draft picks, draft atackle, wr, take a project athletic qb
Maybe
Timmy Boyle was spinning that ball yesterday. Couple more starts and he’ll be knocking on the door to the Pro Bowl
Someone has to serve the Gatorade
Proving that It doesn’t matter who plays QB. The Jets simply whiffed on putting together an NFL offense.
Heard a great stat on Tim Boyle the other day: Boyle has never had a single season at any level of football where he threw more TD passes than interceptions.
That might be relevant if Boyle was going to play a full season but the Jets will just be using him as an emergency spot starter. At this point it doesn’t matter if they put the team mascot behind center because the Jets are going nowhere.
Steve Smith is the only analyst that is actually honest about the QBs and situation. Zach Wilson sucks and Boyle suck it does not matter who is in there for them. Commentators and other analyst like to just say “Oh he needs experience” “That is something that will come with experience” “Being with Rodgers has helped” No it hasn’t they don’t have it to be an NFL QB.
I think it would be hilarious if they picked a QB in the first round.
Rogers would go nuts if it happened again.
It would be hilarious but honestly it might do them better to draft some OL or trade back for multiple picks. They need multiple positions on the OL, a WR, a TE, etc.
Long-term, draft for greatest need which is the offensive line.
Short-term, sack the offensive coordinator and/or OL coach. Pittsburgh dismissed its OC this week and Buffalo the week before. No reason why Nathaniel Hackett is untouchable.
They knew the line was bad and did nothing in training camp before season or at the deadline. The GM was calling teams about unavailable Wrs but where were the calls for offensive lineman. This season goes back to the decision of chasing Rodgers instead of offering Lamar Jackson a deal Ravens wouldn’t match. If you would have traded for Lamar, you would have brought in an OC who fits his system and improved the o-line… Now you have to hope you can find a future QB in the 24 or 25 draft….
This team just never learns
Robert Saleh is trying to get himself fired.. Tim Boyle is not a good QB. The numbers don’t lie. College and the NFL he has 5 TD’s and 24 Interceptions. They are better off using anyone else on the roster at QB and they’ll have a better chance.
Jets are one move away from Super Bowl
Timmy? He’s a grown man. Call him Tim. At this point Joe Namath would be a better option than the qb’s they have right now. Remember one thing…this is the NY Jets. Enough said.
Wilson or Boyle nor much different. Wilson is bad no doubt but this is more of a shake up than an upgrade. I’d start semien he has some experience. Boyle is not a guy worth grooming
