So far this year, Zakelj, the second-year interior offensive lineman, has only appeared in four games on special teams, but the team intended for him to compete with free agent signing Jon Feliciano for the backup center job behind starter Jake Brendel. With Aaron Banks out last week, and with the coaches wanting to get Feliciano more involved at right guard anyway, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, Zakelj became a key backup at center. Unfortunately for Zakelj and the 49ers, a torn bicep will require surgery, taking Zakelj out for the remainder of the season.
Is Poles smart or rather lucky enough to actually get Kramer back?
The more I think about it, I bet the Bears claim Kramer and cut a player on the edge of the roster. Could be Velus or Quindell Johnson, or perhaps Dominique Robinson, who should be on the PS anyhow. They will also have to make room for Herbert’s return, a choice between Evans and Horner.
We shall see in the morning about Kramer.
Like you said, There are plenty of bottom feeders to cut when Kramer, Who has the best PFF grades of any C on the Bears and should have been playing and developing on the roster. Patrick and Whitehair are basically worthless and I couldn’t stop laughing when the Bears said they were putting Whitehair back at C. I remember the reason they moved him to guard was he couldn’t snap the ball in the shotgun. Kramer deserved a chance not the shaft he got.
We will see how highly the Bears FO valued Kramer now that he’s been waived & available. He would now be able to be signed to their practice squad unless claimed by another team, but would need to go to that team’s active roster for three weeks. Doubtful the Bears put in a claim.
However, I would take a chance on Kramer given Kruetz’s praise and first hand knowledge of his growth, but will Poles? They’ve already invested a 2024 6th rounder on a backup G/C who has yet to play. At least their O-line appears to be healthy for once. Gives ‘em a fighting chance!
The Guard designated for return from IR is DUNN !!
