Week 10 added to the list of lopsided defeats the Giants have suffered in 2023, and the team’s prospects for the rest of the campaign appear bleak. As attention increasingly turns to April’s draft, questions have been raised about the job security of head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen.
Both members of the team’s second-year regime are “widely considered to be safe” by those both inside and outside the organization, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reports. Unexpected success last season – which culminated in a run to the divisional round of the playoffs – came with the understanding that a multi-year effort to clean up the team’s cap situation would be required, but the commitment made to quarterback Daniel Jones in the offseason has not gone according to plan.
Jones is out for the year with an ACL tear, though his 2023 performances when healthy fell well short of expectations as part of a highly underwhelming Giants offense. Attached to four-year, $160MM deal, the former top-10 pick is on the books at a rate of $36MM in guaranteed salary in 2024. In spite of that, a report from last week indicated the Giants were willing to add an eventual Jones successor during the upcoming draft if they found themselves in position to land one of the highly-touted passers in this year’s class.
Schoen is known to be among several NFL executives who watched the recent USC-Washington game in person, a showcase of Caleb Williams and Michael Penix. He has been on the QB circuit to see other prospects as well, however; NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport notes that Schoen has regularly watched games featuring high-end signal-callers during the fall when doing so lines up with the Giants’ travel schedule. New York – a team down to undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito at quarterback with Tyrod Taylor currently on IR – could very well end up with an intriguing decision to make come the spring with respect to a potential Jones replacement.
The Giants are currently slated to pick second overall, a slot which would likely line them up to draft UNC’s Drake Maye. Doing so would create the need to move on from Jones after the 2024 season, however, and in the process admit a mistake in making a lucrative investment in the latter. Plenty remains to be determined with respect to where the Giants wind up selecting in April, but it appears Daboll and Schoen will be allowed to make such a call when the time comes.
Fire OL coach Bobby Johnson
And also special teams coach….but find out what magic Phil OLine coach has to produce a line that constantly deals with injuries and performs at high levels……
Who in their right mind thought that signing Daniel Jones to that extension was a good idea?
That person should be fired. Everyone knew extending barkley who would be cheaper then jones and giving jones the franchise tag was the right move
They tried. Barkley didn’t like their offer, so they extended Jones instead. Had Barkley accepted the offer, Jones likely would have been tagged instead.
Why should the Giants fire Daboll? I’m pretty sure Daboll would like a QB other than Jones and it looks like he’ll get his wish. I wonder what Daboll could do with Fields? If you want to fire somebody the GM is a possibility. He’s saddled the team with bad contracts and contract squabbles. Not a good combination for a winning football team.
I would have tagged Jones. Give him 1 more year to show what he can do. For Barkley, I would have tried to negotiate a short 2 year deal a hair above the tag range. If he declined, then pick up a comp pick for him the next offseason.
People who thought the offensive line might improve and liked the Waller addition?
That GM should be fired based on his whole mishandling of the last off-season. They spent huge amounts of money and the team’s personnel actually got worse.
The “Coach of the Year” who can’t beat Dallas or Philadelphia … the general manager who brought his Buffalo Bills crony with him to East Rutherford … such is why the Giants have become the most clueless when it comes to the present-day NFL.
And for those wondering why the Giants are now picking #2 in the draft? Arizona winning on a field goal at the gun means the Giants have the weakest strength-of-schedule among the 2-win teams.

“such is why the Giants have become the most clueless when it comes to the present-day NFL.”
Your Jets are certainly in the running.
The Jets came within a defended Hail Mary of winning in Las Vegas. The Giants were overmatched from the get-go in Arlington. Not the first time that the Giants have been smoked on national TV this season.
lmao Nix isn’t even a 2nd round QB. Don’t have to tank for him, he only looks good because loaded talent. He sucked at Auburn where the SEC is constantly producing NFL level talent all over. The Pac 12 defenses are known to be bad.
Bo Nix…..agree…..he’s the man for the job…..
It’s a bit early to consider firing personnel, isn’t it? As much as the Giants overachieved last year, it was still a very successful season. The roster still needs a lot of work. Hitting the reset button won’t automatically guarantee good results, either. People seem to forget that. And who’s to say that Nix is going to be as good as Jones, or even going to be good at all? The Giants stink, but it seems pretty knee jerk to talk about firings after two seasons. They’re bad, but not “fire a coach after two seasons, one of which was successful” bad.
Though many Buffalo fans would love to see Daboll back in WNY running the offense. Dorsey is stuck in checkers mode while the rest of the league is playing chess.
The Giants didn’t look remotely interested in yesterday’s game. That is dangerous and can poison the future.
I vehemently disagree. The Giants players played hard and were animated. There were reports of several fiery interactions on the sidelines (Barkley and Daboll, Shepard and Slayton). They just lack talent and are decimated by injuries. Dallas is a much better team and they showed it.
Injuries are an excuse for bad coaching and poor team selection. The team that “played hard and were animated” allowed 49 points and 640 yards total offense to the Dallas Cowboys.
Another GM who thinks it’s a great idea to scout QBs when the team has no offensive line support available. When will these guys ever learn?
Tom Landry scouted Troy Aikman and then was eventually fired….
The same will happen to these two
“We like sucking”
If he’s not willing to fire Kafka and Wink, then he can’t stay
They didn’t need to waste a franchise tag on Daniel Jones last offseason. They could have let him hit free agency and signed him back from a lot less than they did. No other team was going to offer Jones a guaranteed $80 million over two years. The Giants are morons and now they get to sleep in the bed they crapped in.
