We heard this weekend that the Panthers were in the market for some wide receiver help, but it sounds like they’re looking for more than a back-of-the-depth-chart option. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Panthers are actually seeking a “No. 1 caliber guy.”
[RELATED: Panthers Looking To Acquire Wide Receiver]
The Panthers signed Adam Thielen and DJ Chark and selected Mississippi’s Jonathan Mingo in the second round of this past year’s draft. So, considering the recent moves the Panthers made at the position, it was easy to assume the front office wouldn’t be looking to steal headlines with their next WR acquisition.
However, Schultz says that isn’t the case, as the Panthers are committed to adding a “top-tier” wide receiver. This is partly due to the team’s own evaluation through the first four weeks; per Schultz, the Panthers front office has determined that they haven’t surrounded Bryce Young with enough weapons. However, the organization is also “all in” on their rookie quarterback, and they’re eage to surround him with elite talent as soon as possible.
Many of the recent big-name receiver trades (Stefon Diggs, Davante Adams, A.J. Brown, Tyreek Hill) have been made during the offseason. It’s uncertain who the Panthers will be able to pry loose during the 2023 campaign, and they may be hard pressed to find a clear-cut WR1 on the trade market.
Troy Renck of Denver7 notes that the Broncos could be a match for a trade. The reporter tweets that both Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton were involved in trade talks this past offseason, and the duo stuck in Denver after the Broncos remained “firm on their demands.” Perhaps the Panthers would be more willing to meet Denver’s asking price, or perhaps the Broncos are willing to lower their demands.
Ben, please proofread your articles.
Thanks.
Trade for DJ Moore
Pretty sure the article said they are looking for a top tier #1 caliber WR.
I think he was kidding.
In any case, Moore has had three 1000 yard seasons with seven different quarterbacks…in five years. That’s not counting this year, of course. I don’t know how many playcallers he’s had in that time, and I’m not counting his college days. Every year, he’s operated as the No. 1 and has handled that role well. He’s reliable, and has good physical tools. Moore is a good option as a WR1 on most teams, and would have been a great addition for Young had the Panthers retained him.
If nothing else, the host of decent but not great WRs that Carolina currently rosters would see their own production shoot up from having the oft-targeted Moore on the other side. Is Moore Jefferson, or Chase, or Hill? No, but he’s certainly a receiver that any QB would love to throw to.
I dont know about kidding but I like it. They have a good rapport with the Bears, so why not? They are very familiar with Moore so they know what they’d get from him. Do it!
Claypool is so out in Carolina that he was never in in the first place.
That was fun!
I’m so confused
Damn 3rd grader could write this better! Act like you give a fu……
What would the Panthers trade for no. 1? Denver would be fools to part with Jeudy or Sutton for a bargain price (Denver needs to spend more time adding talent and learning the offense whilst tied to Wilson’s deal, anyway). The Panthers gave up a lot of capitol this year for Young. They may be able to swing a strong receiver at the deadline, but chances are that it’ll more likely be in the offseason that they add someone.
I disagree with the wisdom of it, but I see Denver possibly being willing to give up Sutton. Carolina is going to have to come up with something good, though, because the Young trade made their few good picks even more precious for a team that could use a few more pieces.
I heard Claypool is available, a 9th round pick and a soggy hot dog bun is a high price but could be worth it
Jeudy and Sutton are 2nd/3rd WR on almost any other team. There is a reason no one has met Denver’s asking price.
That’s selling pretty low. I wouldn’t blame them for Wilson not knowing the offense…for two years in a row. Both guys would be great WR2 (and Sutton has been a good WR1 in the past, and could be again), but both are certainly better than third stringers. Jeudy works better inside, true, but Sutton is an outside receiver who had success early in his career with several different quarterbacks. Denver’s WRs have been much better than their QBs for some time now. If Sutton (who has great size and good speed) ends up on another team, he could operate as either a one or two. It’d be a silly thing for Denver to give up, given that they can’t really rebuild for the next two years.
At this point, though, my concern wouldn’t be as much about what either could do physically; I would wonder a bit about what the constant losing has done to their mindsets. Last year, Sutton looked lethargic and unmotivated a few times at the end of the season. However, that’s to be expected when your QB ignores the playbook and freewheels into the same bad play every other snap and the coach ignores the team around him. He doesn’t look like this year, but you have to wonder what Sutton (or Jeudy, who’s missed time and never been part of a successful pro team) may be thinking at this point in his career. Maybe a new team rejuvenates them, but it would have to be a successful or well run team (not saying that Carolina isn’t). Maybe they just are worn down already. But I think that Denver would be better served to hold on to them and using its few picks to bolster other spots on the roster, even though I sort of expect them to deal one of those two. If I had to guess, I’d guess Sutton.
I mean who can they realistically even bargain for? Jeudy? Sutton? Van Jefferson? Mecole Hardman makes sense he’s getting no targets with jets
CJ Stroud doesn’t have a “No. 1 caliber guy” and he seems to be doing fine.
What about Jameson Williams? If the rumors I’ve heard are true, Detroit loves the talent, but the vibes are off and it’s possible off field may become a problem. First round talent could be this theoretical #1 guy and Detroit seems to be doing alright without him so far.
The “rumors” are almost ENTIRELY from the Lions fan base. While the fans are (understandably) excited about the team, they have for some reason never gotten behind Jameson. Then the gambling suspension happens combined with some “questionable” social media decision making [like posting from Vegas day after gambling suspension, posting playing with holding lit fireworks on the 4th, another of him driving through Detroit neighborhoods in a 500k car while handing out wads of cash…just immature stuff] and it’s really the fans pushing certain narratives.
The team itself has been pretty consistent with what they say about Jamo. It IS TRUE that his work ethic/attention to detail was questioned last season in the weeks leading to him finally making his post-IR debut, but there hasn’t been much said this year–mostly because Jamo hasn’t been able to be in the Lions facility since Week4 of camp/preseason.
I don’t think there is any chance Lions move Williams, certainly not during this season. The reality is the ONE thing the Lions offense is missing is Speed/HomeRun threat from the WR position — that’s a big reason why they drafted Gibbs, because they knew Jamo was going to be out and they needed a true “Weapon”, but JG has only taken a handful of snaps from the slot thus far.
It would be counter productive for Lions to move JW right now as he POTENTIALLY represents the #1 need of the team
Maybe Tee Higgins but Bengals will probably let him walk and not get anything for him.
Honestly, does it matter. Sorry Carolina fans. Just keepn it real.
It’s amazing how often we keep seeing this same movie. Team drafts a flashy QB only to realize later that they have either no OL or WRs to help him succeed.
