The Jets’ offense endured another underwhelming performance on Sunday, but a change under center does not appear to be forthcoming. Head coach Robert Saleh confirmed in his post-game press conference that he is committed to Zach Wilson as the team’s starting quarterback.

Saleh said, via NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Wilson is the passer “who gives us the best chance to win.” That remark comes after the team publicly endorsed Wilson as their QB1 following Aaron Rodgers‘ season-ending Achilles injury. The Jets have been in contact with a small number of veteran passers, but no additions have been made at this point.
Wilson went 18-of-36 for 157 yards as the Jets lost 15-10 to the Patriots in Week 3. New York’s offense converted just two of 14 third downs, adding to the major struggles the unit has endured with the former No. 2 pick at the controls. Wilson’s poor showings led to his benching midway through the 2022 campaign, and they were a driving factor in the Jets’ pursuit of an upgrade at the QB position this offseason. Calls for another switch will intensify in the wake of another forgettable outing.
Tension on the Jets’ sideline was visible during Sunday’s contest, and many have pointed to the possibility of the team’s locker room fracturing given the struggles of the offense relative to the defense. SNY’s Connor Hughes speculates a shake-up in the form of offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett losing play-calling duties to Todd Downing could be on the horizon if things continue as they have early in the year.
“I feel like I’m in a really good spot as far as my ability and I don’t feel like I’ve been able to put that on display,” reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson said after the game, via ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “And that’s for multiple reasons. I don’t know what it may be, but I just know I’m ready.”
Indeed, increased production in the passing game will be required for the Jets to rebound from their lackluster offensive start to 2023. Better health and play along the offensive line – a unit which is without left tackle Duane Brown for the foreseeable future – would no doubt go a long way in helping Wilson or a new face under center moving forward. In any case, the status quo can be expected as the Jets prepare to face the Chiefs in Week 4.
That is why no one will remember your name
@Buck, perhaps but even us Giants fans remember Dave Brown. Yankee fans remember Brien Taylor. albeit for other reasons we remember.
Repeat after me: One Sport Does Not Equal Another!
Maybe if the Jets “start” the season at 3-9, they’ll consider that Wilson isn’t the guy?
Wilson isn’t the guy. And neither is Saleh.
At this point I’m not sure they’ll get 2 more wins in the next 9 games.
A Nathaniel Hackett/Zach Wilson combination is going to get you a lot of games like this one.
Aaron Rodgers said last week that he hopes to be back in time for the playoffs SMH LOL. Yeah okay Erin and Hackett does really good with the Wilson’s with Russ and now Zach. Keep doing that Ahusasca however it’s spelled. Get your chakras aligned too
There is a reason the Jets went all in on Rodgers. They KNEW Wilson wasn’t their guy. Now they have absolutely zero options out there that won’t have to come in and learn the system. So yes… Wilson is their guy… for now.
Why Jets insist this is beyond me. Your players cleay don’t have faith in him.
It’s not too late to bring in any qb but Zach Wilson.
Matt Ryan
Carson Wentz
Davis Mills
Josh Johnson
Minnesota is 0-3 might as well ask for Cousins
Maybe you can trade for Justin Fields who Chicago clearly isn’t happy with and vice versa.
Mason Rudolph Mitch Trubinsky
Somebody other than Zach Wilson.
We all knew how’d this go. Whoever thought Rodgers mentoring Wilson was dreaming.
The Jets schedule is generally pretty brutal, thus you need to beat scrubs like New England.
The defense is pretty good in NE, though. Still, no matter who you play, you need to be able to put more than 10 on the board consistently.
They can’t get rid of Hackett, as Rodgers may eventually return, and New York hasn’t seen if that combination will be successful. Changing playcallers may do something, but it seems to be a Wilson issue more than anything else, across multiple schemes. Downing has run a lot of run heavy offenses in the past (with multiple backs) so that could be a positive change in that regard, but the Jets have the additional issue of having an unproven offensive line, so there’s no guarantee there. That also, unfortunately, impacts the potential play of any other veteran added to the team too, so there’s no guarantees either way.
I guess the formula for winning in week 1 was not sustainable.
I guess Im not so dopey after all.
But as a Bills fan, I support Zach Wilson starting. Wholeheartedly and sincerely.
…..eventually I think they send a third to Minnesota for a 35 year old Cousins. It will be very strange seeing a team trade their starting QB mid-season, but I think there is a real chance it happens.
It would take a lot more than just a third for Cousins. It also puts forward an awkward situation for Rodgers. Either the Jets wasted a pick for Cousins because the team is bad, or they have success and the question becomes why go back to unproven Rodgers post-injury from a successful, younger Cousins.
If Cousins is good in New York, the Jets would be foolish to not re-sign him. If he’s bad, then the Jets wasted compensation. If the Jets re-sign Cousins, then they wasted picks on the Rodgers trade, and wasted a lot of signings in getting the team geared for him. I also just think that the Vikings would want more for Cousins than a single third, even with this being his last contract year and them probably wanting to start anew with a young quarterback with their second year coach.
To be honest, I don’t see why coaches are so convinced that they can always train “their” guys better than the proven guy they have, but they do have a promising rookie on the bench, but Cousins has played very well despite the team being hamstring with bad defense and a disappointing ground game. I think that Minnesota could get more for him, and they’ll need a good pick or two to help in the inevitable rebuild that is to follow.
Im not convinced there isnt a chance, but I dont know what the comp would be. He isnt getting first rounders, Im sure of that.
He isn’t resigning in Minnesota, and getting something is preferable to nothing.
3rd is about what Minnesota can expect. Possibly 2 3rds (Matt Ryan Carson Wentz recent trades).
Minnesota saves money.
Outside the Jets there isn’t really a qb needy playoff hopeful team.
Maybe bears but Minnesota isn’t trading cousins inside the division. Maybe saints depending how much time Carr misses but they may say f it and go with winston.
If I am the Jets, I am less worried about sunk cost fallacy and more about wasting this roster.
They have already proven they are all in by the Rodgers trade. That is unavailable now, so are they really going to stay with Zach after spending the entire offseason chasing QBs? Everyone in the country knows the QB is holding them back.
Kirk doesn’t have to be around for another year after 2023, and could see him increase his FA worth with a run.
The Jets couldn’t afford to pay both QBs anyway. Its a rental.
There are other QBs available, but they would clearly be settling.
Being complacent isnt going to keep Saleh and Douglas in job security.
But, as I noted, I will fully support keeping the commitment to escalation with Zach Wilson.
Maybe he’s loyal to a fault. Or delusional as crap. At this point matt Ryan or Wentz could throw better deep balls and give the team a winning chance
The funny thing is that there’s a not zero percent chance Rodgers ends up in Minny.
Jets suck so bad they get the No 1 pick and Caleb Williams, Rodgers goes to Minny to replace Cousins.
I guess it feels great to get an endorsement from the HC…until you realize there was no one else available that could have gotten it.
Cousins to the Jets makes too much sense for it to happen. Give Minny a 2, 6 and a 7 round pick. God knows MInny loves 7th round picks!!!! lol
Vikings are not good enough to go anywhere in the playoffs , and odds are they don’t even make the playoffs….odds are very much against them. Be stupid not to trade Cousins and Danielle Hunter asap.
Maybe the jets should look at their horrendous offensive line, actually one of the worst I’ve seen in all my years of watching this game. This kid was running, ducking and dancing for his life. Rodgers left his Achilles behind this atrocious line. What a joke.
Cousins would be right at home then. Vikings line sucks arse!!!!
Saleh doesn’t really have an option. You bring in someone now, who can’t start until they learn the offense, and you crush whatever confidence Zach Wilson has left.
Replace that 5 foot 2 inches 11 year old looking water boy Wilson for anyone, including an arena league QB. Wilson is a loser through and through. CUT HIM NOW! Even Darnold is a better option
Would you rather be Chicago? They got kicked so bad by the Chiefs, Fox switched NYC viewers coming out of halftime.
Would you rather be Denver? They gave up 70 to Miami, most points by one NFL team since the 1960s.
But no. “It’s All About The Quarterback”. Tabloids, talk radio, and dittoheads think that way. Last time I looked, tabloids are dying, talk radio is starved for money, and Rush Limbaugh is still dead.
Sign Caron Wentz and be done with it. Losers
I endorse Zach as a starter too. He makes for great Sunday humor!
What about Chris Strevler isn’t he on the practice squad? Why not give him a chance? You don’t need to give up any draft picks and he can’t be worse than Wilson?
Streveler was released from IR, thus he cannot rejoin the Jets this season.
