In need of financial wiggle room to start the season, the Giants have created some by re-working their franchise quarterback’s pact. Daniel Jones has agreed to a restructure which sees $8.42MM of his 2023 salary converted into a signing bonus, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

As a result of the move, Jones’ cap hit for this season has dropped from $21.8MM to $15.4MM. That will give the Giants some much-needed breathing room, as they entered Monday 29th in the league in cap space. On the other hand, it increases the burden of the 26-year-old’s deal in future years, with his cap hits for the next three years ballooning to $47.1MM, $41.6MM and $58.6MM.
New York made a massive investment in Jones just before the deadline to apply franchise tags, inking him to a four-year, $160MM deal. That paved the way for a Saquon Barkley franchise tag, and gave the team cost certainty under center for the foreseeable future. With up to $22MM available in cap savings available next year via another restructure, though, Dan Duggan of the Athletic notes that further adjustments to the Duke alum’s contract down the road should be expected.
Jones faces substantial expectations going into 2023, his second season under reigning Coach of the Year Brian Daboll. The former No. 6 pick put up new career highs in a number of categories last year, and with a new pass-catching corps led by Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller in place, further progression would help justify his contract. It would also make subsequent restructures easier to authorize in light of the other financial priorities the Giants have to address in the near future.
Barkley, along with defensive tackle Leonard Williams, cornerback Adoree’ Jackson and safety Xavier McKinney are among the players set to hit free agency at the end of the 2023 campaign, and important decisions will need to made with respect to the price point the team is willing to set to retain each of them. Jones will be in the fold for years to come, though, especially given the financial downside the Giants would face if they were attempt to move on from him in the near future.
The giants will regret ever giving Danny dimes that contract.
Come on he’s the 27th best QB in the league!
You will regret making this comment in december!
Why are you going to be the 26th best?
They had 1 year of barely beating bad teams so the front office decided to almost max out his cap space? Didn’t they (HC & FO) come in complain how bad the last GM ran the books??
First off its not messing up the cap in anyway cause they have a crapload of cap room coming for next season and beyond. Leonard williams monster hit coming off along with adoree and saquon. If they come back will be at lower numbers. Secondly daniel jones was phenomenal last year playing with 0 receivers and a turnstile oline with neal a lost rookie and then when he went down phillips. Center was meh. Guards sucked. And you say barely beating bad teams? We were predicted to win 4 games last year so thats a ludicrous comment lol
If you think Danny is good, ok. Better be prepared to drink for misery, not success.
Jones improved last year, no doubt, but that extension was very risky. And they’re already restructuring it, putting more pressure on future cap issues- before he’s even started the first year of it?
Agreed. I don’t dislike Daniel Jones, and I think that he’ll be better as the Giants give him better support, but you have to wonder if how long lived his effectiveness will last. Longevity for quarterbacks depends in large part on their ability to play from the pocket. Now, that will improve as the Giants gets better receivers and linemen, but you have to be able to trust Jones there primarily. I’m not saying that that won’t happen or that it will, but it’s a question right now.
I understand that this move was for cap reasons, and QBs age today better than other positions, but the Giants will be stuck with a large commitment to Jones for another year (whether he is there or not-of course I expect it to be). Will he be worth it? We will see.
Its not cause essentially its 2 years and much deserved for the great season he had last year
Who care Giants are horrible
So is your wifes cooking
NYC tabloids, in particular the Daily News and their Giants groupie Mike Lupica, are creaming in their pants about Jones. Still doesn’t hide the fact the Giants gave Jones a big contract one season after declining his 5th-year option.
Giants would’ve been better off letting Jones go and signing a veteran like Derek Carr or Mason Rudolph as a bridge QB.
Grap is also cheaper.
He should be cheaper, he will only be able to play in 8 games.
Derek Carr has done nothing in this league (even with plenty of weapons) and Mason Rudolph would make them one of the worst teams in the league. Not a huge Jones fan but neither of your options make sense.
You would prefer the Giants signing someone from the Foxboro Cheatriots. The Giants have plenty enough talent on offense to the point where they can get by with a veteran QB.
You would be better off not being a football fan!
Let’s see what he does with it. If giants win 8 games or less it’s a complete failure and Daniel could be traded. Maybe Vikings or rams could take him
Top 10 Qb this year if not higher
I don’t think there is a more competitive sports market than New York so if you’re hoping to get those hard earned dollars from the fans, you are going to have to pony up the bucks to acquire and retain the talent that will you the best chance of winning. If fans in the Big Apple see the Jets or Giants aren’t willing to spend for a winner they’ll simply go to hockey or basketball games instead.
An argument that could have been made in 1973, 1983, or 1993. These days the NYC tabloids are hollowed out and talk radio is suffering the same fate.
You can always watch European soccer if you want spendthrift signings by Super League teams.
Regardless of how tabloids or talk radio is fairing, I think you’ll agree that New Yorkers are a discriminating group of fans. They generally know the score and can smell a snow job from a mile away. I think they are probably immune to “hype” at this point. You have to do more than talk the talk to convince them you’re legit.
This guy has not even played a game since signing this contract and they are already “restructuring” it?
Why have a contract?
This will be the second “signing bonus” paid on a new contract…and yet still the player has not taken a regular season snap.
A contract in the NFL now is just an loose outline with a large amount of money attached to it, that teams can restructure whenever they see fit.
A NFL contract should remain in it’s original state for its original length with no restructuring.
I realize that with no salary cap the big money teams would sign all of the good players, but restructuring a new contract is just circumventing the rules.
I thought that contract was a contract. NFL contracts appear to have no “rules” attached to them.
In fact NFL contracts have become a joke.
Quickest restructure in league history? The contract is like 5 months old.
Standards have dropped so low that Daniel Jones is worth this contract.
Having to choose between a mediocre QB market and paying Jones this kind of money, I’m not paying Jones
Mike Evans a likely trade target now? Get Jones a WR1.
Or improve the defense?
