AUGUST 25: Providing further details on Williams’ arrest via the police report, Hill notes (on Twitter) the second-year edge rusher was found to have a vape pen with a synthetic narcotic (which is a controlled substance) in his possession, as well as marijuana. Williams also had a Glock hand gun and 14 rounds of ammunition, and was caught driving 71 mph in a 45-mph zone. Those details will no doubt be central to any league investigation into the situation which takes place separate from the legal process unfolding.
AUGUST 23: Frisco (Texas) police arrested Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams on gun and drug charges Sunday night, Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance represent the charges against the second-year edge rusher. While Williams, 24, was back at practice Tuesday, this arrest could certainly produce a suspension, as it comes months after another off-field incident.
A December 2022 car accident led to a police investigation, with Hill adding an arrest warrant was issued for Williams, who was cited for misdemeanor reckless driving. That wreck led to Williams’ hospitalization and a missed Week 16 game, due to a concussion and a neck strain, but further details revealed the Ole Miss alum was driving “up to” 98 mph — in a 55-mph zone — shortly before that crash, Hill adds.
Williams displayed pass-rushing talent as a rookie, registering four sacks as a backup in 15 games. He finished with 10 tackles for loss. While the Cowboys re-signed Dante Fowler and still have Dorance Armstrong under contract behind starters Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence, Williams is expected to remain a key part of the team’s deep pass-rushing corps. But Williams’ off-field troubles can now be labeled frequent. A sexual battery charge while at Ole Miss led to a suspension in July 2020. This charge was later dropped, and the Rebels reinstated Williams during that season.
The two incidents involving Williams as a pro could lead to a suspension. Convictions do not need to arise for players to be banned under the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
Gonna be a great Seahawk
Seems like a solid individual just needing to work on his impulse control.
I’m somewhat shocked that NFL teams don’t have “impulse control” coaches on their staffs. I guess they were too busy hiring “quality control” coaches.
Or as Jerry Jones calls it” Maturing”. I guess compared to some of the other felons they drafted, He is pretty mature when you compare them all.
Randall Gregory comps are really looking solid at the moment.
the cowboy way
Yeah, nice try.
Say it isn’t so, a Cowboy getting busted…the Cowboy way is always having a bail bondsman in addition to an agen
Look up the stats on arrests per team before making a comment like that
So you’re saying it’s out of character for a Cowboy to have a run in with the law? And if you have the stats then post them before making a response like that.
Polish hammer, why don’t you take your own advice? Before making your unsupported post you could’ve easily looked up the stats.
The stats (arrests since 2000 cal ) are as follows:
1) Vikings (55)
2) Broncos (54)
3) Bengals (50)
19) Cowboys (27)
There were only 3 teams (Lions, Rams, and Texans -the best) that had less than 21 arrests.
Nfc champions philadelphia Eagles place number 32 with only 15 arrests since 2000. Howie runs a tight ship.
I’m seeing the Eagles placing at #29 with 21 arrests since 2000 (bookies.com 3/14/22). A negligible difference between them with 21 and the Cowboys with 27 (6 arrests over 21 years equates to .2857 more arrests per year, or 1 more arrest every 4 years). The Vikings, Broncos, and Bengals have approximately TWICE as many arrests.
Surprisingly, apparently the arrest rate for NFL players is lower than for the general population at large
I think a list of arrest numbers is rather irrelevant without knowing the nature of the offenses. Ruggs getting arrested for vehicular manslaughter isn’t the same as Antonio Brown being arrested for throwing furniture off a balcony.
Why should I look up the official arrest numbers? Sometimes there more to it than just a number. It’s widely known Dallas is a safe haven for troubled souls. If it’s not their own bad boys they turn a blind eye to they’ll take in the fine upstanding citizens like Greg Hardy when nobody else will touch them.
You won’t look up the official arrest numbers because it wouldn’t fit your narrative. And if we talk the seriousness of the offenses and not just the numbers, why aren’t you commenting on the Patriots and Aaron Hernandez? Or an organization that is a serial signer of domestic violence offenders like the Chiefs?
As reported in USA Today, no other franchise in the NFL has compiled a record of domestic violence quite as brutal as the Chiefs. In 2012 alone, the organization had TWO domestic murder suicides, one at the hands of a player, and the other at the hands of another employee. The list of DV offenders includes Larry Johnson, Tyreek Hill, Kareem Hunt, Jovan Belcher etc. Since 2015, the team has acquired at least three players who were kicked off their college teams for alleged domestic violence, including Frank Clark, Tyreek Hill and Justin Cox.
Only two teams, the Broncos and the Dolphins, have had more domestic violence arrests or charges than the Chiefs since 2000. Lamar Hunt Jr and Al Hill Jr in the ownership family were successfully held accountable for sexual assault and misdemeanor assault respectively, with the former paying a $2MM settlement and the latter attending batterer intervention counseling.
Or talk about the Vikings, Broncos, or Bengals all of which have a long list of problem children.
Nope, reality doesn’t fit your narrative.
Thanks for creative your own narrative you wish to squeeze in here. Again, and read slowly or have an adult read it to you, the numbers don’t matter as much when the Cowboys are long known to willingly embrace poor character individuals, some long after no one else would touch them. Take the Cowboy goggles off and quit excusing them by trying to rationalize other teams have criminals too.
Cop out
To me the whole discussion is rather pointless. Fans are going to support their home team. No one says “Hey, the team just moved up 2 spots on the most arrests list so I have to change favorites”.
Slap on the wrist upcoming. The system is a freaking joke as long as you got the talent to run, throw or rush the QB! He’ll be playing, so don’t fret DAL fans! Pathetic…
Texas is known for its drug warriors and hang ’em high justice, thus Williams might be looking at hard time.
Maybe Williams can afford to rent one of Trump’s lawyers.
They’re gonna be pretty busy Lemon! LOL
Dallas Cowboys are No longer America Team but America Most Wanted! Jerry Jones must be running a House of Convicts!!!
After Alvin Kamara only got three games, what is there to worry about?
You’d think the NFL would adopt some sort of unpaid suspension schedule for these guys. DUI=8 games, illegal gun possession=12 games, DV=full season. Repeat offender: double it. (Just picking crimes and numbers at random here as an example).
The Cowboys knew what they were getting when they drafted him – as his background check disqualified him from everybody else’s draft board.
