JULY 29: While Taylor still refused to budge on the phrasing of “several weeks” in an interview today with Pelissero, the vibe around camp seems a bit less cautious. “Several weeks” could indicate that Burrow’s recovery could carry into the regular season, causing him to miss a few games, but Pelissero’s colleague Ian Rapoport reports that, in Cincinnati, “there doesn’t appear to be concern” about the star quarterback being ready for Week 1.
JULY 28: The Bengals will not have their superstar quarterback at practice for a while. They are expecting to be without Joe Burrow for several weeks, Zac Taylor said Friday.
Burrow suffered a calf strain during practice Thursday. After reports of the strain circulated, Taylor confirmed this is the injury. The Bengals are planning to add another quarterback, Taylor said (via NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero).
Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning are the healthy Cincinnati passers presently. Set to each see first-team time, the two will enjoy more important work soon. Letting previous Burrow backup Brandon Allen walk (to the 49ers) in free agency, the Bengals signed Siemian soon after that transaction. When asked about the possibility Burrow’s absence will stretch into the regular season, the fifth-year Bengals HC did not comment.
Burrow has battled back from bigger injuries in his career, having made it back from a November 2020 ACL tear in time for the 2021 season opener. He also missed camp time due to appendicitis last year.
Wearing a sleeve on his injured leg at Thursday’s practice, Burrow went down on a noncontact play and was eventually carted off the practice field. The Bengals did not consider holding Burrow out of practice yesterday, Taylor said. While it represents good news Burrow’s injury did not affect his Achilles’ tendon, it is obviously not ideal for a Bengals team whose championship hopes hinge on their QB’s availability. Opening with a road game against the Browns, the Bengals do not begin their season for six weeks.
Camp absences have not led to Burrow missing time in the regular season. The former No. 1 overall pick has not missed a start due to injury since returning from the ACL tear. The Bengals held Burrow out of their Week 18 game in 2021. Other than that, the 2019 Heisman winner has been on the field leading the Bengals’ ascent in this span.
An experience disparity exists between the Bengals’ two backups, with Browning — a 2019 Vikings UDFA — having yet to play a regular-season game. Since being given the keys to start Denver’s Super Bowl title defense in 2016, Siemian has made 30 starts. Browning, 27, may have an uphill battle for QB2 duties, despite having been with the team since September 2021. Siemian, 31, has been with five teams — the Vikings, Jets, Titans, Saints and Bears — since his Broncos tenure ended.
This calf issue should not affect the Bengals’ timeline for Burrow’s extension; the fourth-year passer expressed patience when asked about his negotiations this week. With Justin Herbert agreeing to a $52.5MM-per-year deal with the Chargers on Tuesday night, Burrow will be expected to finish the offseason as the NFL’s highest-paid player. It will just be a matter of how much the Cincy QB moves the bar from the Herbert point. This injury figures to keep Burrow off the field until he signs that long-rumored extension.
Burrow is a bonafide stud.
I don’t think this matters to Cincy in the regular season at all.
There was a reason he had a wrap on his calf. He might play but seems like this will be an ongoing thing.
He missed most of training camp last year and threw 5 interceptions in week 1. Bengals lost their first 2 games. Cost them home field advantage
He also had his appendix removed… much different than a calf sprain
But both caused him to miss reps. He recovered from the appendix removal and he’ll recover from the calf sprain but it’s the missed reps that a quarterback can’t recover from. If a quarterback didn’t need reps, they’d just show up a week before the season starts
And yet, they will still be an AFC contender at the years end.
They will be, but the Bengals don’t just want to be contenders, they want home field advantage throughout the playoffs. This will most likely hurt their chances. Burrowhead is not home field. Quarterbacks need practice reps, they don’t necessarily need a lot of game reps, but timing is a real thing
Reps matter if you are running a new offense or have new teammates. Build rapport.
Neither are true for Burrow.
While reps are in important it’s to help keep a QB stay active in Burrows case.
Doing nothing all off season and just showing up a week before is a recipe for injury whether its your shoulder legs whatever.
That’d be like sitting on the couch for 5 months eating out every day and trying to run a 5k this weekend. Staying active is the key.
Then why did Burrow throw 5 interceptions in his first game? It’s called timing. You get timing by reps. Why do a lot of quarterbacks throw to their receivers during the off-season? This isn’t a flag football league. You are stupid if you don’t think missing out several weeks of camp won’t affect the passing game. It amazes me how little people know about football on this site
“He also had his appendix removed… much different than a calf sprain”
“Why do a lot of quarterbacks throw to their receivers during the off-season?”
So youre saying Burrow has been getting reps all off season? Cool. So a few weeks with limited action won’t hurt him that much.
Taylor said several weeks. They’re talking 6 weeks minimum. He’s not really gonna be limited….he’s gonna be out. He’s probably in a boot. Again, I don’t understand why you would think that a quarterback that is gonna miss practically all of training camp won’t be affected. So you don’t answer what you thought was the reason Burrow threw 5 interceptions in his first game last year. Even Burrow said the time off hurt
1. Never said he won’t be affected. I see his mobility and throwing stance affected more than throwing.
2. I do think you’re blowing the situation out of proportion
3. I do think you’re overvaluing reps at this point in Burrows career with same offense same receivers and guys he got reps with earlier this year. In fact he can probably do light work on a lot of drills. What he can’t do is go full speed in practice.
4. I literally quoted why Burrow threw 5 interceptions. The dude had surgery and had his appendix removed which is about 6 weeks of doing nothing- absolutely nothing not even working out or training of any kind. You’re comparing surgery to a pulled muscle where burrow can still do things even if limited. Even with a hurt calf he can still do a lot of things. Stuff he couldn’t do after getting his appendix removed.
There’s a reason why NFL players didn’t want 4 pre season games. In fact many don’t want a pre season at all or want less than 3 currently.
If reps mattered as much as you think they do to veterans guys would understand the need for pre season games. Actual reps during live game speed. Yet veterans want the opposite. Less reps. They even went as far to reduce the amount of actual reps in practice limiting pad days. Again if reps mattered as much as you think they do to veterans pads days and live action would be more popular among players.
Sit this one out man. Way out of your deer hunter video game league.
You are very uninformed
Burrow missed 2 weeks of practice last year. He was in camp a week, had his surgery and came back to practice 3 days before last preseason game. He did lose weight but I still don’t understand how being 6 pounds lighter would cause him to throw 5 interceptions.
” It amazes me how little people know about football on this site”
Look man. It’s not our fault you’ve finished last in your ff league 10 years straight. Go deal with your anger somewhere else.
I don’t play fantasy football. Never have. Never will. Too geeky for me. Burrow is injury prone
Burrows has some grit so I’d not be concerned with start of season. He’s also got a real good handle on the offense and likely this years draft WRs & RB would sit on ST more than offense.
Having watched Siemian play for Denver I’d expect Browning to push him as Jake was pretty decent as a Husky.
Burrow
Ahimsas’
Burrow
Carson Wentz to the rescue lmao
If it is something serious and going to affect his season (not saying it will) then the Bengals could contact the Saints and see if Jameis Winston is available for trade. I know he is not everyone’s cup of tea but he does have a cannon for an arm.
Bengals would be looking for a cheaper version
Brandon Allen is currently the 4th best QB in 49ers camp – thus he clearly was not the best choice as Burrow’s backup.
Josh Johnson seems to be the go to guy in situations such as this. The Bengals did have him under contract before.
Testaverde time!
Joe Burrow is showing Josh Jacob how to hold out proper.
Don’t think even for a second that Joe Burrow is returning to the field without a new contract, Katie Blackburn and the Bengal’s understand this.
You sir, have no idea of the kind of person Joe Burrow is. He is not holding out for a new contract. He is a man of integrity and doesn’t have to resort to trickery or crying wolf. If he sits it’s because he’s half dead and even then you’d have to have a lineman sit on him to make him stay out of the game.
