The Falcons have been doing their homework on rookie quarterbacks. According to ESPN’s Matt Miller, the Falcons have been “taking a serious look” at the 2023 QB draft class.
Despite their efforts, Miller believes it would take a “dream scenario” for the Falcons to end up with a top quarterback prospect, and the reporter believes the organization would only extend itself for Alabama’s Bryce Young or Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud. Barring a trade, there’s no chance those two QBs will be on the board when Atlanta is on the clock at No. 8. By that point of the draft, Florida’s Anthony Richardson and Kentucky’s Will Levis will also likely be gone, and the front office would surely trade back before going with someone like Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker. In other words, the Falcons probably won’t have the ability to make a choice at the position when it’s their turn to pick, but it sounds like the front office could pounce if an opportunity presents itself.
It makes sense that the Falcons would only make a push for one of their preferred prospects, especially since they used a 2022 third-round selection on Desmond Ridder. The Cincinnati product went 2-2 as a starter last season and will mostly likely lead a depth chart that also consists of Taylor Heinicke and Logan Woodside.
ESPN’s Michael Rothestein explored some options for the Falcons at No. 8, noting that an edge rusher, cornerback, or guard could all be in play. The reporter also wonders if the Falcons would be willing to reach for Texas running back Bijan Robinson, and he also questions if the front office could end Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter‘s potential fall down the draft board. Rothstein doesn’t expect Atlanta to select a WR with their first-round selection, with Miller adding that the position (along with safety) will be a clear emphasis for the front office during the second day of the draft.
Evidently Atlanta suffers from a quantum level time lag for information regarding player/position details of this draft.
Since they’ve never had a great one in their history, it’s good idea!
Michael Vick and Matt Ryan weren’t great but pretty dang good…you really think the top 4 QBs in this draft are “great”?….how many teams have truly had a “great” QB in their history?
‘Pretty dang good’ says it all. Falcons have never had a great QB. 2nd question, lots. Miami, TB & NE (Tom), Raiders have a few rings as do the Skins. Dallas 2 HoF’ers in Roger and Troy, 9’ers, Chargers had Fouts, Fran is in the HoF for Minny, Pit w/ Ben & Terry….Falcons have always been has been’s in the league.
if HOF is the criteria for Great is Matt Ryan not getting in making him great? Several teams won Rings with just ‘dang good’ QBs if that’s the other criteria i.e. Terry Bradshaw…but you think the top 4 QBs in this draft are ‘Great’, meeting the criteria you laid out?
In their 55 years of existence, the Falcons have compiled a record of 379–487–6 (369–473–6 in the regular season and 10–14 in the playoffs), winning division championships in 1980, 1998, 2004, 2010, 2012, and 2016.
6 division titles in 55 years isn’t bragging rights.
yes Google works great….I love debating people that can’t answer simple questions by deflecting and changing the subject to something else lol. You just wanted to take a shot at the Falcons for whatever reason which is cool, I take shots at the Mets often just cuz lol
If you debate facts, that’s on you. Vick sold seats and commercials, not W’s. Matt was the polar opposite, a good clean cut man from Vick. If it weren’t for Vick’s arrest, neither would be footnotes in NFL lore.
I’ll ask for the 3rd time lol…do you think the top 4 QBs in this draft are going to be ‘Great’ according to your criteria?
No. What 3% of top 10 picks really pan out? Bama guy is short, Stroud had 1st round WR’s & OL. Everyone says the UF kid ‘has accuracy and footwork issues’ & the UK one we’re told ‘ignore last season, look at the season before…’. Where do you see success? Hooker looks like the best, but he’s ‘OLD’ at 25!
We’re told Chicago is ‘lucky’ to have Fields as a QB. His team ‘won the 1st pick in the draft….
Exactly!!! I agree on every critique of the QBs you just made (although I hope every one of them proves us wrong). But why say the Falcons should consider them because they’ve never had a ‘Great QB’?!…see my point?!
All 4, probably not, but they could be. History says otherwise if you look at the first x of whatever position comes out of the draft. Could 1 or more be great? It’s possible, but it depends on both the player’s ability to move to the NFL and the team that selects him to have enough support around that player to help them excel.
Matt Ryan has had himself a career worthy of being considered for the HOF.
7th in most passing yards by a QB all time
9th in all time passing touchdowns
6th all time in game winning drives
Longevity plays a big part in HOF consideration.
He latches on to the Jets if they miss out on Rodgers for a season or 2 he certainly moves up those rankings more.
I personally don’t think Matt Ryan is a HOF’er…but when you look at his overall numbers it becomes hard to argue he’s not one if he gets in
I think it’s hard not to put Ryan in the Hall of Fame when you compare his career accomplishments to Namath. Broadway Joe does have the SB win, but it’s not like there is a slight difference in their stats.
Broadway Joe is the extreme outlier.
If compared to him, 30 other qb may be in. He’s more or less exclusionary to he compared to, unless someone comes along with a household known personality and perception.
Surely with all the holes the Falcons have it will be BPA at number 8 and not a reach for a so-so QB prospect.
But I thought Lamar Jackson was going to solve all their problems…(sarcasm intended).
