Devin White is set to play on his fifth-year option in 2023, but he may not do so in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers linebacker has requested a trade, per ESPN’s Jenna Laine (Twitter link).
Laine’s colleague Adam Schefter tweets, to no surprise, that Tampa has no intention of moving the former fifth overall pick. White has operated as a full-time starter throughout his four-year tenure with the Bucs, and has a Pro Bowl nod and second-team All-Pro nomination to his name. White’s option checks in at $11.7MM.
As is often the case, this trade request stems from frustration with contract talks. Negotiations have not gained traction, according to ESPN.com’s Jeremy Fowler (on Twitter). White, 25, is not eligible for free agency until 2024, due to the Bucs exercising his fifth-year option in May 2023. And the off-ball linebacker market has seen some notable developments this year.
Two teams — the Ravens and Bears — authorized top-five contracts at the position in 2023. Following a fall trade, Roquan Smith secured a $20MM-per-year deal with Baltimore to set the market at the position. In the early hours of this year’s legal tampering period, Tremaine Edmunds agreed to an $18MM-AAV pact with the Bears. That deal sits fourth among ILBs. Considering C.J. Mosley‘s Jets contract — a $17MM-per-year accord that changed the positional market — was finalized in 2019, it will likely take top-five money here for White to sign a second Bucs deal.
A noticeable gap between White’s production and Pro Football Focus grades has been in place for years. While White has generally been regarded as an upper-echelon off-ball ‘backer, PFF has consistently disagreed with that perception. The advanced metrics site, while steadily rating Lavonte David as one of the game’s best, has viewed White far off that tier. White has never carried a PFF grade north of 60th among linebackers. Over the past two seasons, the former No. 5 overall pick has rated outside the top 70. The site has annually viewed the LSU product’s coverage and run-defense abilities as lacking, with pass-rushing production (20.5 career sacks) propping up his grades.
Traditional numbers suggest the sideline-to-sideline playmaker resides among the game’s better linebackers. During Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl LV-winning season, White totaled a career-high 140 tackles and added a staggering nine sacks and 16 quarterback hits. White has surpassed the 120-tackle plateau in each of the past two years, not missing a game. White added two forced fumbles last season and finished with eight tackles for loss for the second straight year. This included an emotional performance that came shortly after White’s father died just before the Bucs’ Germany game.
The Bucs made White the highest non-rush linebacker draftee since 2009, drafting him to play in Todd Bowles‘ defense. The fit has not always been perfect, as accusations of loafing on plays emerged during the Bucs’ underwhelming 2022. Bowles defended White and did not demote him; White has played at least 95% of the Bucs’ defensive plays in each of the past three seasons. But it is worth wondering how the organization views the young defender through a long-term lens.
Tampa Bay re-signed David to a fourth contract and, despite being more than $50MM over the cap weeks ahead of free agency, found room to bring back Jamel Dean, who was drafted two rounds after White in 2019. Several vets from the Bucs’ Super Bowl defense remain on the team, and the organization wanting White back will limit his options. The 2020 CBA’s holdout restrictions further limit contracted players’ options, as even medium-length camp holdouts threaten to delay a player’s free agency. We are months away from camp, however, and this trade request obviously will make for a more interesting offseason for the Bucs.

I could see GB making a move here, he seems to be their style of LB and they have a need at the position. Plus they should have the capital and cap space after the rodgers trade.
P Smith, R. Gary, Q. Walker and D. Campbell. I don’t see GB spending a big chunk of money on another LB. And unless the DC really goes off the deep end, there’s only room for 4 on the field at a time.
When did R.Gary get moved to LB..??
Did I miss something??
ESPN, Fox sports and the GB Packers site I checked all list him as a LB. I suppose you consider him an ‘EDGE’ so by all means continue doing so.
I was thinking the convo was more about off-ball LBs/ILBs, and I also just flat-out missed and read over where you mentioned Preston Smith who is also in that type of DE/OLB or EDGE mold..
Idk why I’ve always considered and classified Preston Smith as an OLB though and not Gary. I guess I’ve always just seen Gary more as an EDGE/DE, but classified him more as a DL rather than a LB.
I suppose I just always underestimated his athleticism, and was ignorant of the fact that the Packers deployed him as more of an OLB in their system rather than just your typical DE/EDGE…
Thank you for the extra tidbit of knowledge..
It was. I was simply pointing out GB has quite a bit invested in the LB group (starters) already, so there just isn’t really a spot for another starter-type…
I did remember as I typed that bit about not having room for 5 on the field at the same time, that Fritz Shurmur did it occasionally. However, Berry is not the mad scientist old Fritz was.
Yeah, I cannot see White in a Packers uniform either. I have to agree with you, I just don’t think they really need him. There are more pressing needs elsewhere that they can address with their picks and the assets they have available.
Off topic, but quick question..How would you grade Quay Walker’s first season in Green Bay.
He was initially pretty raw coming in to UGA, but he also had the raw skills to mask some of his mistakes early on.
When he was asked, he was also sneaky good as a Blitzer, but did have some lapses in coverage from time to time.
Overall, he got considerably better each and every season in Athens, and I fully expected his best ball was ahead of him.
I’m clearly biased in regards to Walker, as a UGA fan, and loved the pick for Green Bay, but I’m curious as to another fan’s thoughts on him, his rookie season, and his outlook moving forward…??
I knew he might take a year to really settle in, and figured he’d probably take some lumps his rookie year. Still though, I think he has a tremendously bright future in Green Bay, and wishing him the best..
I don’t think I watched enough to really judge how he progressed throughout the season. Unfortunately the 1 thing I recall most was pushing the trainer late in the season. I believe he said after that incident he needs to be better disciplined, and i think that goes for his play as well as after the whistle. We’ll see how that goes this coming season.
Oh wow, yeah that’s really surprising..By all accounts, I only ever heard that he was a really hard worker, good teammate, and seemed like a good guy.
Then again, it isn’t like coaches are jumping for joy and running to the podium to call out their players for their bad behavior and/or for being undisciplined…
I’m honestly still shocked about all the negative press surrounding Jalen Carter. I had only heard and witnessed good things coming from Carter. Charity work with kids and helped with a few events, helped pass out meals to those in need, was a solid teammate, etc.
I’m not naive though, you never TRULY know someone and what someone is like behind closed doors unless you spend a bunch of time with them. Even still, some people are just really good at putting on masks, and hiding their true colors…
Hopefully, Quay Walker used this season to grow up on and off the field, and he will only be better for it in the long run.
Also, it’s hard to believe he’s still just 25 years old. Idk why, but I expected him to be closer to his late 20’s..lol
It’s also a testament to his hard work that each year he’s been able. to increase his number of tackles, stuffs, and his number of sacks. Last year he was limited due to injury, but he was more than well on his way to continuing that same trend.
How do they have a need at the position? They just re-signed Devondre Campbell last offseason in addition to drafting Quay Walker
Traditional statistics said that Blake Martinez was one of the best as well, but any Green Bay fan who watched him get blown routinely or make a tackle 6 yards past the LOS knew better. Im gonna go ahead and take PFFs word for it that hes not that great
I thoroughly enjoyed watching the 49ers brutalize Martinez year after year in the playoffs…
He was single-handedly one of the main reasons the 49ers always had so much success running the ball against Green Bay..
Poor guy..lol
*up. Blown up
Lol I see why you felt the need to correct you original statement..haha
Not a chance IMO. Besides the often mentioned Devondre Campbell and Quay Walker. GB has a solid backup in Eric Wilson who had that one ridiculous/amazing season in Minnesota like 3yrs ago but has resumed backup LB duties. 2 names I’ve become quite familiar with recently while visiting GB fansites are Isaiah McDuffie and Tariq Carpenter. McDuffie is a 2nd yr LB out of BC who apparently fans, local media and the entire GB staff are in love with and expect to be the next Ray Lewis within a year or 2. And Carpenter is a 6’4 240lbs “Safety” out of Georgia Tech who just might be the next Mark Baron. So I don’t think they’re going to even consider Devin White and the money he’s demanding
What’s his trade value? Late 1st or 2nd?
I’d say probably a 3rd. If you trade for him, he’s gonna be looking for top end LB money.
I mean…so was Roquan. And I’d say white had produced about as much as him while the team had success as well.
He’s a LB so probably a 2. Roquan was a first team all pro and was traded for a 2. That should indicate what market actually exists for him.
Pick 59 and a 4th next year from Buffalo
Probably not a bad plan. Tampa Bay might have some down seasons on the horizon.
A possibility for the Steelers I suppose.
I doubt it, they just spent money on two guys who will start
And just released Jamir Jones
I am so done with LBs named Devin
His price tag is $12M a year so I think you’re safe, lol. Can’t imagine where the Steelers would get that money. I do however equate the release of Jones with the possibility that Dupree is coming back. I mean, they just signed Jones a couple months ago
ya I actually like the guys they signed , we’re good on vet ilbs.
would like Sanders, Campbell or Simpson in the draft depending on what they do with the earlier picks
I’m still thinking round 1 will be Addison or Wright if they stay put at 17 .. but I think they’re leaning towards trading up for an OT or CB
This rumor that’s going around—packaging 17 and 32 for the Bears’ #9– is something I hope they avoid. Rumor says they want Skoronski but the problem is they really need 3-4 immediate impact players to come out of this draft.
You’re sticking with Addison and I can see that, although to me, they have a similar player in Austin coming back
I’ll say that if they don’t trade up, they’re going to go with JPJ
If they do move up, it’s to beef up either line
I’m only sticking with Addison if they don’t move up.. I think they’ll move up
Pretty impressive to have exercised his option in May 2023 when it’s only April 2023…
Jealousy is a stinky cologne.
Waited a bit just to make sure Brady really wasn’t coming back this time.
There’s not much trade value in White at this point, as he immediately wants to sign a top of the market deal. Probably better to force him to play out his option and either tag with the non-exclusive franchise tag and see if anyone bites (two first-round picks) or makes a better offer. Or let him walk in free agency and pick up the third
Tampa Bay would get now.
