12:25pm: Details are in on the Carr deal, per Rapoport (Twitter link). The contract is worth $150MM over four years, good for an average annual value of $37.5MM; that figure ranks ninth in the league amongst QBs. In addition, the Saints are giving Carr $100MM in total guarantees, including $60MM guaranteed at signing (which rank 10th and 11th in the NFL at the position, respectively, and outweigh the $40MM the Raiders would have owed him had they not released him when they did). $10MM due in year three of the pact vests after one season, meaning the contract essentially contains $70MM fully guaranteed. Garafolo tweets that a no-trade clause is in place as well.
Rapoport adds that Carr agreed to structure the deal in a way which helps their tight cap situation, meaning the first year likely carries a low cap hit. Even if that’s the case, Winston is all-but assured to find himself playing elsewhere in 2023 as New Orleans looks for less expensive options behind Carr.
9:19am: After plenty of speculation, the first quarterback domino is set to fall in 2023. Derek Carr is signing with the Saints, reports Mike Garafolo of NFL Network (Twitter link). His colleague Ian Rapoport tweets that the deal is four years in length. The Saints have since announced that the contract is officially in place.
Carr’s tenure with the Raiders all-but officially came to an end late in the 2022 season when he was benched. He spent the final two weeks of the campaign away from the team, leading to questions of where he would land next and how Vegas would proceed under center. A trade was a possibility at one point, with the Saints being the only team which worked out compensation with the Raiders on a potential deal. However, the 31-year-old forced Vegas to release him and give himself the chance to test the open market.
That made Carr the top quarterback known to be available prior to the start of free agency. He had a visit with the Jets which resulted in mutual interest existing between the two sides. New York has been very public about their intentions of adding a veteran passer to give the team stability at the position, though they have routinely been linked to a potential Aaron Rodgers trade.
Carr met with not only the Saints and Jets, but also the Panthers during the Combine, a sign that New Orleans could be facing competition from their division rival. Carolina was thought to be weary of Carr’s $35MM-per-year asking price, however, leading to the expectation that they will use the draft to find their next long-term QB. This news points the Panthers further in that direction.
It came out last week that the Saints were prepared to sign Carr after the outcome of their sit-downs with him. That suggested they were in the lead to land the four-time Pro Bowler, although an update from yesterday seemed to keep the Jets firmly in the running. In any case, it comes as little surprise that Carr has made his decision before the start of the new league year, when other veterans (including Jimmy Garoppolo) will become eligible to sign with teams.
The Saints made a strong push for Deshaun Watson last offseason, in spite of an unenviable cap situation. That led them to turn back to Jameis Winston as their Week 1 starter, though the addition of backup Andy Dalton led to the expectation that a swap in the pecking order could be coming. That was indeed what happened relatively early in the season, though Dalton’s performances led to increased calls for Winston to be re-installed as the No. 1.
Overall, neither passer did enough in 2022 to dissuade New Orleans from making a splash at the position. Dalton is a pending free agent, while Winston has one year remaining on his current contract. Releasing the latter as a post-June 1 cut would yield $12.8MM in cap savings, though the Saints still have plenty of need for additional funds in the immediate future. The team has made multiple moves recently with respect to restructures, as they looked to carve out not only the needed space to achieve cap compliance, but also the ability to afford Carr. Now, they have done enough to land what they hope will be an upgrade at the position for the foreseeable future.
Attention will now increasingly turn to the Jets’ pursuit of Rodgers, who has at all times been their top preference. With Carr no longer available as a backup plan, New York could face increased urgency to trade for the four-time MVP, whose playing future remains very much in the air. Meanwhile, veterans Carson Wentz and Marcus Mariota are now the top passers available at the moment, after they were unsurprisingly released last week. With Carr off the board, the 2023 QB landscape has started to take shape.
(writing this before contract details have been released)
This really seems odd to me… NoLa is in such a difficult cap situation… Paying Carr doesn’t seem like it will help NOR allow them to surround him with decent weapons…
Their cap situation is no longer difficult. NFL cap dynamics have become increasingly convoluted in recent years, but their overall situation is quite rosy right now.
You will see them sign multiple other players too in the coming weeks as they gear up for a clear shot at the division.
No sports fan in America without a law degree and at least 500 hours to go through the fine print has any clear understanding of the NFL’s or NBA’s salary cap rules.
Most teams do what they want to do although it may cost them a little more. Any long term penalties are always overridden by the next owners / players CBA.
Both leagues are just a joke. What they do that MLB doesn’t is fairly equally share revenues – so there are no Mets / Dodgers vs. Rays / Pirates in the NBA and NFL.
OTC (OverTheCap.com) does quite a bit to clarify the situation on a per player basis. The deferred payments and void years have become madness at this point, you’re right. Half the teams have committed cap bankruptcy now where there’s simply no way they can continue to sign contracts without deferring all their big contracts.
These workarounds make the whole cap system somewhat pointless. Like the modern taxation, it’s become a game of who can more effectively cheat the system.

Hello Saints, how does #30 this year for your 2024 first sound? 🙂
Huh… looks like Fowler’s reports were not accurate then.
Well, that’s not great news for a Jets fan who’s still scarred from the Favre experience and was hoping to avoid the Rodgers circus.
I can fully understand that sentiment!!
Likewise. We’re now at the mercy of this clown and the Green Bay Packers
LOL Jets.
Headlines ‘Jets to be players for Carr and Rodgers’
*Opening week depth chart QB1 Jimmy Garoppolo*
Garoppolo would be better than Rodgers at this point because he wouldn’t require draft compensation and would likely last more than one season.
I’d disagree. Rodgers isn’t going to command much in terms of draft compensation. Teams knowing how he acts every off-season, amount of money owed, age, and teams knowing the Packers are looking to offload him are going to drastically change how much is needed to get Rodgers. Realistically, he could be had for a 3rd rounder. Giving up a 3rd rounder for one Rodgers season is worth 10 seasons of Garoppolo.
You’re delusional it’s going to take far more then even a 1st round pick to trade for Rodgers
Lol I’ll be back when he goes for Pennie’s on the dollar. ‘Delusional’ is thinking a team is getting far more than a 1st round pick for a 39 year old who does hallucinate drugs in the offseason and threatens retirement weekly. Not to mention goes on a podcast and rips teammates after every loss. He’s a child. Not to mention one with a huge cap hit and retirement on the horizon. Get real.
The Jets are not going to give significant draft capital to the Packers AND have to pay 60 million. Third round pick at most. And by the way, the guy who runs Over The Cap has said that Rodger’s contract isn’t nearly as flexible as he has made it out to be so the whole restructuring thing that he’s mentioned may not even be possible.
Anyone out there who can make heads or tails out of what the Saints are trying to do? Does this mean Winston will soon be cut?
Winston is gone for sure. If he’s designated a post June 1st cut, he’ll save nearly $13 million with a dead cap hit of under $3 million. And I think Winston would make sense as backup and maybe even competition for either Denver or Washington. As for what New Orleans is doing, Carr is currently the best QB in that division and they might have the best roster in the division. Not that either is setting the bar all that high, but that town loves its team, and I doubt anyone will get fired for making the playoffs.
So glad Carr is going to Saints. Jets now need to make the contract offer to Lamar Jackson so crazy that Ravens won’t match it.. bring us Lamar baby!!!! Love Carr is out of the picture!!!
Not if they sign Aaron Rodgers.
We aren’t even sure yet if this is possible. If they decide to just stick the regular tag on Lamar, it’s likely going to be a season wasted of Sauce, Wilson, Breece, Vera-Tucker, and other solid, young players.
Please let the Jets trade two first-rounders and kill their cap for Lamar…signed the rest of the AFC East.
It wouldn’t kill our cap since there aren’t many long-term contracts hurting us. It would be easy to just keep the young franchise cornerstones and build the rest of the team around Lamar. Yes, the team would essentially be set for 2023 because of restrictions, but it’s not as if we would be screwed for 2024 2025, and so on–years in which we would surely be competitive and likely better than the Patriots and Dolphins.
In 2024, there are a pretty good amount of guys easy to move on from: Tomlinson ($4.26M dead cap vs. $17.2M hit), Uzomah ($2.3M vs. $10.3M), Franklin-Myers ($800k vs. $14.3M), Duane Brown ($4.7M all gtd), Conklin ($1.68M vs. $8.4M), etc. There are others who can possibly be cut but are likely mainstays. The only questionable contract for 2024 really is Mosley at $10M in dead cap. Corey Davis, Braxton Berrios, Carl Lawson, etc. will be FAs after this year. Jets could easily make Lamar work, and would put him in a better position to succeed than Baltimore has the last two years, which is an odd thing to say.
He wants a Watson sized guaranteed contract. If you think that would not hamstring the Jets you’re deluding yourself. Not to mention the loss of 2 first round picks in the event of a transitional tag. More if it’s a trade. All for a guy who’s not even a proven pocket passer.
I was sad to hear that Carolina was “weary” of the $35M contract obligation.
Carr Crashes In New Orleans
no he won’t… a solid qb…just needs better OL…
If Michael Thomas actually plays, this could be nice for Carr. Not to say it makes them a contender but the could walk away with the division championship. He’ll have a functional offensive line and the best defense he’s ever played with
IF he plays. I don’t think he likes playing football anymore though. Dude has just straight up quit on his team the past few seasons.
Until the best defensive players are cut to make room under salary cap. Lol
Ya because he was so great with Adams bad singing at the price they did
Last year Rodgers made his decision exactly 1 week before legal tampering. Today is exactly 1 week before legal tampering. Carr’s decision MAY be great indicator that Jets and GB are working out trade. I expect an announcement soon.
Jimmy G in Gang Green just makes too much sense. Not saying I would or wouldn’t do it, just saying it’s going to happen. Coaches want their guys. Salah loves him.
and he’ll break a leg walking into the press conference…
I still don’t understand why the JETS would pass on Carr and want Drama Queen Rodgers. He won’t play more than a year or two, cost plenty of draft capital and be a constant complainer. Yes he is better than Carr at his peak but better doesn’t always win. Going to the AFC he won’t win a thing the way that it is stacked with great QB’s.
“It’s All About The Quarterback” is a loser’s game. You don’t understand that at one point in November the entire AFC East occupied the playoff places.
Besides, the early chatter had Carr joining an NFC club and linking him with the Jets was the way to jack up his contract in New Orleans.
I wouldn’t trade squat for Rodgers. Green Bay needs salary gone.. no one else can afford the salary. Just say we will take his salary off ur hands or let them keep him.
Green Bay Packers hold the future of Aaron Rodgers in there hands, seeing as he the one that sign the extension so speculation to jets is like last season to Denver just do his connection to certain coach..
Interesting move by saints who are over the cap so how do they afford this
Rodgers holds the future of Rodgers. If he wants to retire, stay in GB or be traded. He has the Packers and any team trading for him waiting.. Ravens on other hand want another team to deal with Jackson on contract. They then can match it or let him walk for two picks.. I think it will be Lamar or Jimmy G..
Does Carr make NO a playoff threat or just a threat to win a weak division?
Cake walk to win a weak division, and bounced in the first round. Something that happened numerous time throughout the Brees era too…..
Ugh. Why are Jets so dumb? You have the safest bet sitting right there. Carr might not be what the Jets want but he was exactly what they NEEDED. Big name, low profile, locker room guy, not a diva.
NOPE! Not our Jets. Heaven forbid. We can’t pick the right QB when we have the #2 pick. We can’t even pick the right QB when he’s sitting in free agency.
They called the dude a first ballot HOF, they did everything to get him. They can’t pick the right one in FA because FAs know better than to choose NY.
I cannot think of a QB picked at #2 overall that was a huge success. Going backwards from memory, though I may be mixing up years, I remember Wilson, Wentz, Trubisky, Mariota, Leaf and Mirer. I’m sure I’m missing someone.
McNabb would probably be the best, RG3 had success albeit very, VERY, short lived. The 2 spot has been rough though lol.
The NFC South is as wide open as any division you can look at right now. With Carr Saints have best QB at this time. Will see what happens with free agency and draft but at this time Saints likely would be the favorites..
“Thought to be wary.”
This place is in desperate need of good copy editing.
What was the reasoning that it didn’t work out with the raiders? He’s better than most starting QBs out there
McDaniels. Bro why do people keep asking that.
Carr is a huge upgrade from Winston and it’s not like he won’t have any targets with AK, MT, Olave, Trautman. Could bring Landry back or sign another WR too. The o line is pretty solid and I think the defence will remain strong.
Saints playoff bound for sure
The Saints are further moving forward with their plans for the Quarterback position for the 2023 season by signing a free agent backup for CARR.
The new backup QB is = OTTO MOBILE !!
Who better to backup a CARR ??
Hot take: Carr > Danny Dimes
Now that Carr gets $37.5, Danny Dimes has ZERO reason to ask anything north of Carr’s contract
Carr is a good QB on a reasonable contract on a good team. Looks like a win-win for everyone. No trade compensation required. Well done, New Orleans. The post-Drew Brees doldrums can now be put in the past.
Also shows up Daniel Jones’s compensation demands as ludicrous and team-destructive.
GM of N.O. should be instantly fired for giving that much money to a guy who is not even top 20 in QB’s and a bad team didn’t even want him. What am I missing here?
That bad team that didn’t want Carr has bad management, horrible coaching and doesn’t have a clue what they’re doing. If you’re basing any evaluation off of what they did, I’d reconsider.
Facts: Carr is a good QB, and New Orleans will be a playoff team next season. He’s a borderline top 10 QB.
Am I the only one who thinks the Raiders will (or should) raise a stink that NO owes them whatever trade compensation they had previously, albeit tentatively, agreed to?
Or was it LV who nixed the deal? I was thinking Carr blocked it. At any rate, since he ends up with the Saints, it smells a little fishy. And no, I’m not a Raiders fan.
Carr had a no trade clause, so nixing the deal was well within his rights that the Raiders gave him. The Raiders have no stink to raise because the “brain trust” there are a bunch of clueless clowns.
The Raiders wrote the contract and made up the rules. If something smells fishy, it’s the stink coming from the Las Vegas leadership team. They’re awful!
Several other GMs are heaving a sigh of relief as it takes that costly gamble off the table for them.
The Jets were viewed as the only other serious bidder so how does the Saints signing of Carr improve their options in the least?
The Carr deal is actually very reasonable when you consider what Lamar Jackson, Daniel Jones, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, and Justin Herbert are going to get. 100M guaranteed and 150M for 4 years is a fair contract for a solid veteran starting QB.. Geno Smith will be a very interesting watch on contract..
You really think Carr is going to do ANYTHING with NEw Orleans?? Not going to happen. That team is a step lower then the Raiders. Saints will let him go in 2 or 3 years mark my words.
Ridiculous deal
How so? Geno Smith just got 35m a year. Quarterbacks don’t come cheaply after their first 5 years, but you’re absolutely doomed if you don’t have one.
New Orleans will cruise to a division title, host a home playoff game, and that alone is a huge revenue booster.
