The Panthers are expected to use their newly acquired first-overall pick on a quarterback, meaning their young signal-callers could be available via trade. According to NFL Network’s Mike Giardi (on Twitter), the Panthers would consider moving Matt Corral in a trade.

The Ole Miss product was selected in the third round of the 2022 draft, with the Panthers intending to bring him along slowly while hoping that one of their veterans could provide at least a season-plus of production. Neither Sam Darnold nor Baker Mayfield ended up working out for the organization, and the Panthers also made it clear that P.J. Walker wasn’t in their plans.
Even with the inconsistent QB depth chart, the Panthers were unable to get a look at their rookie, as Corral suffered a preseason Lisfranc injury that knocked him out for the season. The team could have repeated their plan in 2023 by pairing the young QB with one or two veterans, but the organization instead decided to go all-in with the first-overall pick. While it remains to be seen who will ultimately be selected, it’s clear that the Panthers will hand that unknown rookie QB the keys to the offense.
Considering Corral’s college resume, a team would surely make a run at the QB. He earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2021 after finishing with 20 touchdowns vs. five interceptions while adding another 11 touchdowns on the ground. Per Giardi, the cost wouldn’t be high to acquire the QB, and it’s unlikely the Panthers will be able to recoup their third-round investment.
Packers, to compete with Love? I wouldnt hate it
I prefer a capable veteran.
I agree with that . Or Tampa makes sense…
Baker Mafield is rumored to be Tampa’s first choice
Would be comical if the Panthers made this move and Corral ended up having the better career
Not really new regime and Frank reich doesn’t plan to be this high again. Can’t let it all ride on a third round qb. I think they are better off keeping him then trading him for a 4/5/6 rounder.
I think part of the problem is that Corral very much came in as a developmental QB, coming from an offense that never made him do a lot of what an NFL QB needs to do. There are only so many practice reps to go around, and Carolina presumably wants a veteran to go with their number one overall pick. If they can get a mid-rounder for Corral, might as well.
I never implied that they shouldn’t take a QB. It will just be interesting to see the career paths.
He has never played, so it is totally possible. Makes you wonder why they even bothered to draft him.
They had no real QB path at the draft last year. Darnold wasn’t anything special. Baker came in July. Honestly they should draft a QB every year until they find the one, not necessarily 1st overall but it’s never a bad idea to draft a QB you see as a value in the middle rounds. If you had a late 1st grade on him and you get him in the 3rd.
Also, the plan probably was to develop him over 2-3 years bc he has upside.
Even without the draft, the Panthers seem to be going through QBs the way McDonalds goes through McMuffins.
Would be interesting if Minnesota grabbed him and let him sit behind cousins.
…or replace
Kinda what I was thinking when I saw the headline. They need a backup & future replacement so why not especially if it’s just a late round pick for him
Does Carolina have any one else on the roster QB wise?
They tendered Walker as a RFA and they have Eason on a futures contract. So… no.
Seattle could make sense. Schneider loves taking flyers at QB, and I don’t think it makes sense to send Corral to a team that’s already spending its developmental energy on an early-career QB.
He is no better than 3rd in Seattle not worth his or the teams time.
He might not be more than a third anywhere at this stage. That’s why I’d figure on him going to a team with a veteran starter, particularly one that likes taking flyers. And it’s not like Seattle has anything behind Geno right now.
Makes sense in Philly if the price is right.
No he doesn’t
Pass
Yes he does. He was a mobile quick release passer, familiar with the RPO. You can’t just have old heads as 3rd string backups.
He is going to seattle to sit behind geno..
I would love Dallas to take a shot at him. Let him sit behind Dak for a year then let’s see.
I don’t really understand taking quarterbacks in the third round anyway. You probably don’t think you’re getting a long-term starter or else you would have taken him earlier, and a third rounder is still valuable enough that you can reasonably expect to get a starter at a different position. If you’re getting a quarterback you gotta be all in on him, and the third round is basically half-assing it to me. The Panthers probably wasted a decent pick on Corral and Willis didn’t look great with the Titans either. Ridder wasn’t bad for the Falcons but I’d be shocked if they don’t add an upgrade.
I’m all in favor of picking a quarterback every year to develop, but it makes more sense to do it in the sixth or seventh round when you don’t miss out on as much to roll the dice on someone. For every Russell Wilson, you probably end up with 20 Will Griers.
Tell that to Tom Brady
Was going to say the same thing.
Ya ok, easy to point out the exception in Brady being amazing, but that is not common for 6th round QBs…
I don’t get your point. Tom Brady was a sixth rounder, which I specifically said I don’t have an issue with. If you’re going to take a shot in the dark on a QB, you might as well do it in the later rounds and not the middle rounds.
I also specifically said that there are exceptions like Russell Wilson (who actually was a third rounder and not a sixth rounder). But if you want to keep throwing third round picks at a quarterback and hoping he’s the guy, you’d be wasting a lot of important picks.
Minnesota for a 5th or 6th round pick, Trade Kirk to 49ers.
Continue purge for 2024
Or let Cousins walk after 2023.
If they trade Cousins to San Fran I would guess they’d be getting Lance in return so not sure they’d trade a pick for Corral
So Minnesota should throw a season away? No thanks, we improve our defense we can at least win the division again and who who knows after that. 12+ wins with a better defense.
