With the offseason officially here and many roster changes on the horizon, things could not be rockier in regard to where things stand with the Packers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Mike Florio of NBC Sports cited longtime Packers reporter Bob McGinn after his recent podcast appearance with Tyler Dunne in saying that the Packers may be “done with Rodgers.”
“He’s not coming back,” McGinn told Dunne, utilizing his own instincts and information from people with “first-hand knowledge.” “I mean, they’re disgusted with him, and they’re done with him. And they’re moving on.”
If you’re curious who the “they” McGinn is referring to consists of, it’s essentially everybody. McGinn told Dunne that the entire power structure containing CEO Mark Murphy, general manager Brian Gutekunst, and head coach Matt LaFleur are all done with the longtime Packer. Reportedly, they are under the impression that he phoned in the 2022-23 season, thinking he is no longer working hard and that he showed up in less-than-ideal shape after blowing off the offseason training program.
McGinn also noted that the team “fully believes” in former first-round pick Jordan Love and his ability to take over as the full-time starter. McGinn went as far as to assert that even if Rodgers insists on returning to Green Bay, he will do so as Love’s backup. This differs from Gutekunst’s public comments in January, when the veteran GM pointed to Rodgers still giving the Packers the best chance to win. Gutekunst also conveyed that Love was ready to play. A subsequent report indicated the Packers are seriously considering the prospect of a Rodgers trade — to an AFC team — and the all-time great’s weekly conversations with Pat McAfee have continued to circle back to the trade topic.
The situation as it has been illustrated points to an inevitable trade. There is simply no way to move forward together if McGinn’s reporting is accurate. After Rodgers came back following a flirtation with retirement last year, the Packers are apparently ready to take the option out of the four-time MVP’s hands. Unfortunately, the way the situation has deteriorated will make it harder for Green Bay to dictate the terms. Knowing the Packers are done with him will allow other teams to low-ball offers for the future Hall of Famer who turned 39 two months ago.
Regardless, it appears that Rodgers’ time in Wisconsin is coming to an end. Whether he decides to retire or is traded to a team desperate for an upgrade at quarterback, the Packers may well be set to move forward with Love under center.
World’s biggest assclown reports that world’s 2nd biggest assclown won’t be back in GB. Thanks, but I’ll pass on every word that comes out of Florio’s stupid mouth.
Yeah except that if it is accurate that he got that from Bob McGinn there is probably some credibility to it, he is one of the most respected and accurate NFL writers in the business and has been in the Packers beat for generations now. He has pretty reliable sources.
McGinn isn’t remotely reasonable when it comes to Rodgers – he hates him passionately for not being a true Branch Covidian like McGinn – there might be some truth in the mix but I would take McGinn comments on Rodgers with a wheel barrow of salt
McGinn hated Rodgers well before Covid. McGinn used to be my go to source for the Packers but his bias against #12 and the current regime made it hard to trust his judgement at times. Would like to believe he does have a source and not shocked if there is truth to it, once Rodgers got his new contract he “won” the battle after drafting Love and seemed to lose his edge.
McGinn is a tool. Has been for years.
Isn’t he still on his mushroom quest?
Raiders 3rd rounder
JETS
He will go to the Jets, where he will get eaten alive by the media. Rodgers will want out and Zach Wilson will be able to return for a re-birth.
At the end of next year Kirk Cousin’s will be at the end of his contract and want to play under the tag for a third and final time. The Vikings will let Cousin’s go for the cheaper Aaron Rodgers.
OH wait……..
How prophetic! Where have I seen this movie before?
Florio is complete idiotic moron. I’ll take the reporting of schefter and Rappaport over this hack of a reporter
We all know how this is going to go. Rodgers
loves the attention, writers want clicks, but at the end of the day, he’s back with the Packers.
Anyone here “fully believe” in Jordan Love? The dude hasn’t showed anything in his admittedly-limited game action that indicates he is a legitimate NFL starter…
I do, he will be just fine.
I don’t. But then I didn’t fully believe in Rodgers when he took over for Favre..and I was screaming at the TV during the draft when they were asking each other ‘if you’re GB, do you take Rodgers if he falls a couple more spots..’? AND I was more than ready to see Favre just go away.
He might surprise me in the long run, but I definitely expect year 1 to be a bumpy ride.
Same was I’m sure said about Rodgers after the 2007 season. He was unproven after backing up Favre for 3 years for his opportunity for 2008 and never looked back. Love I truly believe is going to be a good QB
I don’t. He threw 17 interceptions his last year of college, against less than top competition. He needs to show he can do it…but he needs the opportunity to be able to do so!
Aaron Rodgers needs to go!
There is no way they keep Rodgers to back up Love.
Might be true but McGinn hates Rodgers mainly for political reasons – McGinn worships the NYT and the Washington Post and is a true Branch Covidian – which of course increased his hatred of Rodgers – I would take what he says with a wheel barrow load of salt.
Objectivity eludes liberalism.
Yup. Only conservatives are objective. JFC.
Might wanna loosen the tinfoil hat, bobs.
There was a time when working at a newspaper was honorable.
Lol this is a madman on a rant.
Whether any part of this true or not, McGinn loses credibility considering at least part of this so called report is based off of his “instinct”
No matter what commenters here think of the source, it isn’t hard to assess this situation. Rodgers doesn’t want to be in GB, and GB has been ready to move on from Rodgers since they drafted Love. They thought they were right when they drafted Love, and they still think they are right. None of this requires inside sources. It is all pretty clear. Rodgers will be playing on another team next year unless he retires.
is that why the morons who thought love was worth to draft went to rodgers house begging for him to come back last offseason?
Not getting two #1s anymore. For the Jet though it’s well worth a 2 this year and 1 the next
conditional on if he plays in 2024
Jets! Rodgers doesn’t fit Josh McDaniels offense in Vegas! It’s a different offense than Rodgers is used to.
Before I kick dirt, I’ll say that the failed dropped pass first play against the Vikings was the key to success for both teams. The Packers never recovered in that game and Minnesota had nearly unprecedented success.
except the packers won the next three games… the london game, which ultimately was against a better giants team than expected, ended up being the turning point of the season, and rodgers broke his thumb on the final play of that game… i think that had a bigger impact than he led on… was a pretty lousy start to the season tho…
This soap opera is America’s answer to “Coronation Street” (over 10,000 episodes). Hopefully, the next update will have the Packers looking to replace Rodgers with Jay Cutler.
Bob McGinn’s one of the most respected and accurate NFL writers? Are you trying to be sarcastic? Bob McGinn’s a washed up bum, who players hate for constantly making up BS. Dudes a clown and needs to retire.
McGinn you’re harassment is unwelcome in Green Bay. You are done!
Why let a trashy barstool editor run the Packers? Because McGinn has no backbone and can say it on a screen but not on television because he isn’t welcome there.
Rodgers doesn’t want to play for the trash Jets. He will go play with his boy DA in Vegas.
From the outside looking in (aka not a fan of the packers) nothing that they did last year makes sense now that they have come to this point.
First they had to know the shelf life with Rodgers was quickly approaching its expiration date so why sign him to a new contract when they were already up against the cap and would have to let go of Adams and restructure so many contracts there by kicking the can down the road to this year?
Now the pack for the better part of 30 years have been smart with contract decisions, drafted and developed talent with better success then most and had the ability to let guys walk a year before they were done (Green, Jennings, KGB, Nelson, Kampman) and found immediate replacement players at the same or better level and kept the salaries under control never having to reboot like most teams, that is until last year.
Now they have to basically trade Rodgers or hope he retires, either way getting a hefty dead cap hit, potentially loose Baktari, Watkins, Cobb on offense and Amos, Savage, and Smith on the defense by cutting them or letting them walk there by adding to the dead cap hit and creating holes I’m not sure they have the players currently to plug in. Also they will most likely be loosing both tight ends and their most consistent wide receiver with again no one to replace them (granted I know Dobbs and Watson looked good for stretches last year) but they have no one behind them or have the capacity to sign a high profile player to compliment them or for upgrades on the defense that was outside of Rodgers play was critical on why the didn’t do well last year.
Finally the cherry on top is the guy that is going to replace Rodgers is not even signed beyond this year with only mop up duty and garbage time in the Eagles game has not shown anything to if he is ready or not to take over.
There is no way this many mistakes made can equal to a good year in the next three years for a team that was a few pieces away but stable to now becoming a team with more questions then answers. The Monday morning QB in me says the mistake was keeping Rodgers last year and letting Adams walk trying to push to a Super Bowl. Granted it is what ever team should strive to do but clearly making the playoffs is the line you should always be over and going forward the packers won’t even have that going for them.
Keep Rodgers by losing Baktari, Watkins, Cobb, Amos, Savage, and Smith. Sign 2-4 top flight receivers.
