FEBRUARY 28: Providing more detail on Carr’s schedule, Rapoport tweets that at least three teams will speak with him at the Combine. That list includes the Jets and Saints (for what will be a second sit-down with Carr), but also the Panthers. Carolina is set to be in the market for a QB addition of some kind this offseason, with only Matt Corral and Jacob Eason currently under contract for 2023. It was reported last week, however, that the Panthers would not be willing to commit to Carr at the $35MM-per-season rate he is thought to be seeking. The success of his visit could change things, of course, though Carr will have several other suitors even if Carolina elects for less expensive QB options.
FEBRUARY 27: Derek Carr looks to be planning to check off more visits without logging extensive travel mileage. The free agent quarterback is headed to the Combine to meet with teams this week, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com notes (video link).
The 31-year-old passer has met with the Saints and Jets already, and while those teams look like the frontrunners thus far, others have checked in on where he stands presently. The Buccaneers, Commanders, Panthers and Titans have been connected to Carr thus far, though none of these teams have been tied as closely to the nine-year veteran compared to the two he has visited.

A deal that averages more than $35MM per year has come up in the Carr sweepstakes, but Rapoport adds lengthy talks about money have not entered the equation just yet. Carr is prioritizing fit for now. While money will undoubtedly be a key component in where he lands, the former MVP candidate will be unlikely to choose a team with poor competitive prospects. Mostly through the $25MM-per-year extension he inked with the Raiders in 2017, Carr has already banked more than $130MM in his career.
During Carr’s New York visit, Jets brass told the available arm they were monitoring other QBs — including Aaron Rodgers — and let him know where he stood related to the Green Bay icon, according to SI.com’s Albert Breer. With the Jets informing Carr they want to see how the latest Packers-Rodgers offseason saga plays out, this points to the team confirming a previous report of Carr being its second choice.
The Commanders hold a substantial lead in cap space, in terms of Carr suitors, sitting on more than $35MM after cutting Carson Wentz and Bobby McCain. A Daron Payne franchise tag will cut into this figure, and Washington is not believed to be seeking to dive deep into the QB salary pool this year. They certainly were last year, and it is interesting in a year in which Ron Rivera will be on the hot seat he could be willing to go with Sam Howell and/or a lower-priced veteran. The Bucs and Panthers are believed to be in the same boat, and the Saints, despite their restructure-happy ways, still have a long ways to go on this front.
If this lot of teams is unwilling to pay franchise-level money for Carr, it would stand to reason the Jets might be able to land the longtime Raider at a lower-than-expected cost. A clearer picture of where Carr’s market stands will emerge in Indianapolis.
Don’t understand the Carr frenzy – other than teams are hard up for QB’s.
I’ve spoken with a number of people that watch a lot of NFL games. No one came back saying that thought Carr was a very good NFL QB. A few came back and said he wilts under pressure – they’ve seen it multiple times.
I don’t care one way or the other. Just passing it on.
Carr gets a lot of undeserved flak for things that were beyond his control. The Raiders are a dysfunctional clown show. They’ve changed coordinators on him so many times it’s hard to count. They’ve left him without an O-line or Receivers, and without both at times. The coaching has largely been atrocious. The owner is a broke joke. The defense has mostly been an afterthought. They haven’t hit on a day 1 draft pick in ages. They hang on to the glory years of old because it’s literally all that franchise has. That’s all they’ll ever have as long as Mark owns the team. He’s impetuous, and he can’t afford to be. I just feel bad for whatever poor college QB gets drafted to “save” that franchise because he’s doomed from the start.
Take whomever you think is the GOAT QB, clone them, put them on that team with that leadership at any age you want- they’d fail too. That’s the culture ownership and management creates. Look who they hired to coach the team- the same guy that bailed on Indy and ruined Denver this exact same way.
None of that is Carr’s fault. He’s a good QB, and people will see it when he’s in a better situation.
This guy CONSTANTLY throws the ball 2 yards when it’s 3rd and 10. You can cry about having different OC’s and coaches, but it always comes back to ‘get 1st downs’. He doesn’t do it for whatever reason.
He’s not terrible but not great. You don’t deserve a massive payday with his resume. Sh-t or get off the pot.
Really???
-Since 2015 the QB with the most game winning Drives?
Derek Carr with 29
-Since 2015 the QB with the MOST 4th quarter comebacks?
Derek Carr with 23
Most fans would not think of Carr if asked this question. Whats most impressive is with the weak teams Carr has had, the opponent knows they are throwing the ball. Carr is Far better than you know.
Zero playoff wins.
1 playoff appearance as well.
All of that EXCUSE making Still doesn’t change the fact that he’s didn’t produce when they surrounded him with weapons THIS year. Bottom line, this is a business. Again, likable guys always get the benefit of the doubt over production. This definitely is the case
@swing_maker- They surrounded him with weapons on paper; but both Renfrow and Waller missed about half the season, and the O-line didn’t have a lot of talent. Oh, and they fired an offensive coordinator again, showing the clueless wonders in charge weren’t apparently happy with the offensive design and/or play calls.
It is a business, and the Raiders are a bad one.
I mean when it comes to the O-Line: Kelechi Osemele, Rodney Hudson, and Donald Penn were pro bowl regulars during their time with the Raiders and also Richie Incognito and Sam Young , then on the receivers/TE side, you got:, Michael Crabtree, Jared Cook, Jason Witten, Jordy Nelson, Hunter Renfrow as you said, Amari Cooper, Zay Jones, Nelson Agholor, and then Davante Adams… so to say Carr had little to nothing during his time with the Raiders is a stretch and it keeps being brought up for some reason
So you’re describing a bunch of offensive linemen who were there when he was his very best, but haven’t been there in years. And then that list of pass catchers: Nelson and Witten were both toast, several of those guys were never more than OK, and that whole list is spread out over almost a decade.
The Raiders have had a good O-line at points, but when it was strong they didn’t have much in the way of WRs.
Adams is a clear #1, but the line was bad last season.
Renfrow is good, and the Raiders made the playoffs with Carr throwing to him, coached by Rich B.
Now honest question: do you want Crabtree, Jones or Agholor as one your top WRs? They’re all WR3s to me, at best.
Witten and Nelson were washed by the time they became Raiders.
Cooper was plagued by drops with the Raiders. Cooper dropped 20.7 percent of the catchable passes thrown his way during the 2015 season. Dude dropped 18 passes as a rookie! He dropped 10 in 2017, his third year in the league, when he should’ve been starting to put it together.
Jordy played less than a season for OAK. He wasn’t the WR he was in GB. Witten was old and was there mainly as a player/coach. Carr made Agholor better. Carr had terrible defense. His BEST in his 9 year career was ranked 21st.His best!
A whole lot of teams are hard up for a QB. Easy to turn your nose up at him if you’ve got much better or have nearly as good on a rookie deal, but that still leaves a lot more teams than there are probable solid starting QBs in the draft or elsewhere in free agency.
He’s a fine in a 32 team league that only has about 20 good QB’s. Sure he might be at the lower end of that 20, but that’s still enough for multiple teams to be interested in him
So …..
Is he going to run drills?
Hard-core patty cake death match
It way better than what the jets already have
It seems rather comical that Carr only had to out perform guys like Nathan Peterman, Mike Glennon, DeShone Kizer and Jarrett Stidham to become a hot ticket item.
$25 million is all a middle of the pack QB is worth. He’ll never take you to the Super Bowl, thus you will be better off spending your money to improve other parts of your team.
I’m going to say this they try to blame carr for what happen this season but what going to be the excuses if raiders flame out again under McDaniels?
For those don’t understand why teams like Carr, he typically ranks as a fringe top 10 qb, most always top 12. After Maholmes, Burrow, Herbert, Hurts, and Allen, maybe Lamar, the difference between any other qb is minimal. The odds of finding a top 5 qb in the draft are so minuscule that if you have a win now roster like the Jets it makes total sense to get Carr and basically lock in your playoff spot. Panthers not so much.
At 35M compared to the other options… Carr should be a Giant or a Jet.
Lamar should get the Non-exclusive tag, maybe he ends up in Miami.
Jimmy G will be a consolation prize. Raiders end up with A-Aron.
