The Raiders are set to meet with Derek Carr soon, and they will do so with the intent of exploring a trade. Not long after Carr’s benching, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports the Raiders have begun the process of evaluating the trade market (Twitter link).
This has been the expected path since the Raiders demoted Carr ahead of Week 17, leading to the nine-year starting quarterback stepping away from the team. The Raiders have just more than a month until Carr’s $40.4MM guarantee vests. As of now, that figure becomes guaranteed three days after Super Bowl LVII (Feb. 15).
Shortly after Rapoport indicated a trade route will be explored, Carr posted a goodbye announcement (via Twitter). In it, he addressed previous comments of pursuing retirement if the Raiders did not want him. As expected, retirement is not in Carr’s plans.
“I once said that if I’m not a Raider I would rather be at home, and I meant that. But I never envisioned it ending this way,” Carr said in a lengthy statement thanking Raiders fans. “That fire burning inside of me to win a championship still rages. I look forward to a new city and a new team, who, no matter the circumstance, will get everything I have.”

A number of teams figure to be in on Carr, even with that lofty guarantee figure looming. The Jets, Saints, Commanders and Panthers come to mind, with a PFR poll last month pegging Gang Green as the clubhouse leaders. Other teams like the Colts, Titans and perhaps the Buccaneers — in the event Tom Brady either retires for a second time or leaves as a free agent — could be on the Carr radar as well.
Carr holds a no-trade clause, giving the 31-year-old passer some control during this process. The Raiders included the clause in their 2022 extension, which featured the guarantee vesting date allowing the franchise to move on if Carr did not prove a fit with the new Josh McDaniels– and Dave Ziegler-run operation. Mark Davis gave the new Raiders regime carte blanche when it came to handling Carr, but the HC-GM combo was believed to be close to keeping Carr as the starter through the end of the season. The owner, who is believed to be lukewarm on Carr, stepped in and may well have pushed the situation to this point.
As could be expected given their McDaniels hire, the Raiders are already being connected to Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo. This marks the second time the Raiders have been linked to Brady in free agency. They pursued the all-time great in 2020, but Jon Gruden deemed the longtime Patriots cornerstone too old even at that point. Wooing a quarterback in advance of an age-46 season will obviously be unprecedented, though Garoppolo is Carr’s age and could serve as a longer-term bridge.
If the Raiders are unable to trade Carr, it is believed they will release him rather than pay that $40.4MM. Despite the team giving Carr a three-year, $121.4MM extension just last year, a release — thanks to the uniquely structured deal — would result in just a $5.6MM dead-money charge. Carr’s deal calls for a guaranteed $32.9MM base salary and 2024 and ’25 bases of $41.9MM and $41.2MM, respectively. Just $7.5MM of the 2024 base salary is guaranteed; the 2025 year is nonguaranteed.
The quarterback trade market has heated up in recent years, producing blockbuster deals that sent franchise cornerstones like Matthew Stafford, Russell Wilson and Matt Ryan out of town. Deshaun Watson fetched even more in compensation. It appears Carr will be another high-profile passer on the move.
J-E-T-S jets jets jets
That would be a perfect fit. Give them White and a 5th. Carr gets to play meaningful football, MAYBE Zach Wilson learns behind him and takes the reins.
If you’re diagnosing personalities, from afar; Carr would be a great guy to put in front of Wilson. Humble. Leadership qualities.
White is a free agent. Maybe offer a 5th and next years 5th?
Carson Wentz got traded for two thirds last year after consecutive bad seasons, and you guys think the price of Carr will be a fifth or two?
@Ooof. Are you the guy that calls out other fans for speculating on a players value? Are you here to contribute to the conversation, or demean other fans for speculating?
I contributed a reminder of how much QBs cost in trade. 37-year old Matt Ryan also returned a third round pick in trade.
That’s all you had to say. Make a point, participate, don’t attack people. This isn’t Facebook
I didn’t attack anyone. Take a deep breath.
I’d say this is a slightly different situation. This is a divorce with the Raiders with a high contract value attached to him. The Rams wound up giving a lot to the Lions on top of their former #1 overall pick because he had a high salary attached to him as well. I could see pick swaps involved like a third for Carr and a fifth but it’s not the same as the others.
I’m calm bud. If I think you’re being a di**, I’m gonna ask you to please stop. If you don’t care to audit your verbiage when discussing, don’t comment on my posts. Your choice of words and your intent, matter. I’m here to talk ball. Not “win” anything or to sound smart to a bunch of strangers
Which verbiage do you find so objectionable? My intent clearly isn’t what you think it is, and I think you’re being bizarrely oversensitive.
“Carson Wentz got traded for two thirds last year after consecutive bad seasons, and you guys think the price of Carr will be a fifth or two?”
Rather than just saying, for example;
“Carson Wentz got traded for two thirds last year after consecutive bad season. Don’t you guys think the price for Carr will be higher?”
You see, one statement goes after the credibility of your fellow posters.
One statement is simply PARTICIPATING with your fellow posters.
Which one did you choose? I mean, trust me; I’m gonna be ok. I just don’t think you recognize the power of your words. Here I am letting you know. That’s what I get paid to do
🙂
Wentz also was in the MVP discussion for the majority of one season…Carr has never played at that high of a level. Does that mean Wentz is better? No, it does not. It just means one team saw something in Wentz and hoped to unlock it. These aren’t fantasy football trades, Oof. It’s all about how the acquiring organization values the player.
That logic makes a much stronger argument for Indy’s acquisition of Wentz than Washington’s. By the time Washington traded for him, Wentz was not only several years removed from that season, but had been dumped by that team AND the team led by that offensive coordinator after one year. Carr has been better the last few seasons, even if his career high point isn’t as high as Wentz’s. Regardless, it’s hard to see Carr’s value this season being much lower than Wentz or Ryan last year.
Good points, and while I am not a Carr fan, he is at least proven and you know what you get. Agreed his trade value should be higher than both. Does make
Me wonder, the Colts just bad at trading for QBs? Should we even compare values for any QB they trade for lol
I think most trades for QBs are going to be disappointing, because teams don’t tend to trade away great QB answers. But in Indy’s case, I think the Wentz trade went so badly that they were in a rough position last year. They needed a QB, they thought of themselves as a win-now team in a winnable division, and they didn’t have a first round pick. Matt Ryan going over a cliff at the same time as their line fell apart was about as badly as that could have gone. At the time, I said it would have been better to go after Mayfield, and that certainly doesn’t look wise either. The Ryan trade wasn’t good, but they had dug themselves into a terrible hole with the Wentz trade.
The Raiders dig themselves a hole and are going to have a hard time trading Carr for anything substantial. Teams can wait to see if they cut him or vest him. If they do vest him they can make a trade with a low pick and take on more money or a higher pick and less money.
They put themselves in this spot the way they handled this. They could have came up with a mutual agreement that said he was stepping away for personal reasons. The reason could be Marks haircut.
Teams now know they have to trade him so they lost leverage. I bet they don’t get anything done before they have to make a decision but if they do it will be a lower pick.
You also IMHO can’t compare this trade to others because most teams don’t screw up as bad as the Raiders have.
@SODOMOJO: I think you’re very sensitive here. Ooof questioned the player evaluation, then offered a counter example (Wentz). And, imo, two 5ths for Carr is a pretty silly proposal.
@sodomojo
Im sorry to say but honestly your posts so far in this thread have been the condescending ones. first towards Zach Wilson through inference/passive aggressive way of saying that he is unteachable based on your “MAYBE” then by saying saying he could learn to be humble and lead the team. Then you made nothing but condescending posts to ooooof by your misreading the inflection (which is common on majority of emails and comments because you cant determine voice tones) of his words. The way you have responded makes you sound way more of a “Di**” than him and you were looking for a fight.
but back on topic .. Honestly i think Zack got humbled this season by the benchings and being left inactive but at this point I think he has lost any type of comradery with the team and will need to be traded or released. The best he may get if he stays with the jets is third string / practice squad unless he comes out looking like an all pro qb.
In all reality, i think Jets are looking for a starter and back up which white could def be backup and with a good qb at the helm to learn from he could become a capable starter. Im not saying an all pro (even though he showed signs of it) but a Carr / Tannehill type that could succeed given the right team and system.
Carr is 100% not in Raiders plans next year and can be cut with little damage to the cap which hurts his value – teams interested can wait it out and deal with him as afree agent.
They can trade him with just as little damage. It wouldn’t shock me if they ended up cutting him, but I’d bet enough teams see him as the best available option or at least enough of an upgrade that they would trade something to cut the line on free agency.
Teams can wait it out, but that’s a risky endeavor in this market. I think people are going to be surprised by the return he nets. Considering Wentz’s price, I think Carr goes for at least a 2nd and a couple mid-round picks.
That sounds about right. And the point about waiting is a key one. The Panthers and Colts tried waiting last year.
Exactly. I don’t think waiting out the QB spot is usually in a team’s best interest, particularly if they think a guy is the solution.
I’d be okay with the Jets overpaying for him because now feels like the time to take a swing on a signal caller who elevates the floor of the team. There are plenty of talented guys for him to get the ball, too, and a defense that won’t require him to score 30 points a game to win.
I’m pretty sure it would take more than White and a 5th (White is also an upcoming FA and not very good), but I’d be ecstatic if a backup and day 3 pick is all it took. Count me in for that any day of the week. But in all honesty, if we gave up a 2nd and a couple mid-to-late round selections, I’m all for that, too. Jets need a solidified starter badly.
Also, GOMS.
I would think he’s perfect for the colts. They’ve been running veterans off trade the last few years and they then wouldn’t have to use there too 5 pick on a QB
Wouldn’t you think they want to *stop* doing what they’ve been doing at QB the last few years?
The colts don’t think, look at the owner
it’s a lot of money to pay but locking him up for a couple years makes sense How else can they get a playoff caliber QB?
Going to be an interesting off season for QBs again. Carr is a player in all of this, and would it be a surprise if Brady, Lamar and Jimmy G are, too?
The Lamar situation will be fascinating. When they lose this weekend with him sitting out 6 weeks in a row what will Baltimore do? Tag him? He has shown his willingness to sit out without a long term deal in place. And is Carr an option for the Dolphins with Tuas concussion issues?
Keep hearing Brady associated with Miami and Oakland. I guess it’s the win-now idea. We’ve seen his skills slip a bit this year. You’d think teams would want younger options
Jackson to Vegas, Carr to Baltimore. Not a coincidence that both players are inactive. Vegas has a home attendance problem. Answer with blessings of league? Bring in highwire act Lamar. Ravens owner/FO are fed up with Lamar and Lamar with them. Impasse. Carr is a suitable answer to continue to be competitive.
Hard to see McDaniels and Jackson being a fit. Atlanta could be fun for him.
If Baltimore were to change QBs to one who isn’t a significant rubbing threat, they’d have to move on from Roman, right? Not that they’re afraid to change up coordinators. They’d need receiving help even more then, but they should already be addressing that.
Whoops, that should say running. I think Watson is the only QB in football who’s a significant rubbing threat, unless Favre or Big Ben comes back.
I see what you did there, funny.
ISWYDT. Well played!
Oooof. Who the present coach is doesn’t matter. Mark Davis is approaching Dan Snyder territory. The league and owners are po’d about each teams attendance woahs. Both are on notice. Do something and now. Davis’s answer? Bring in, what in his mind, is a marquee draw. Jackson fits that bill. And the talk of Brady there has validity as well.
Agreed. On the Ravens side, yes, Romans would go. No biggy to Biscotti. Remember late season 2012? He, err Harbaugh, canned Cam after the Redskins loss. And we had a winning record at the time. Ballsy, man. ballsy. Oh by the way, as you know, Biscotti got his SB victory a month and half later.
Lamar is unhappy and rightfully so. But he has made a grave error in judgement. Tweets and photos from him starting in the spring chirping his displeasure about the pay situation have been reported and supported and discounted as good natured fodor by the local media. The local media does not own the team. Biscotti has one goal every year. Win the SB. In his mind, can’t win one when your QB is making internal matters public. LJ f’d up big time.
It matters if Davis can’t actually afford to fire McDaniels.
And I’m not sure that last part makes sense to me.
And even if the Ravens do move on from Lamar, I doubt they completely overhaul their offense and create a new set of problems to build around a second tier guy in his 30s like Carr. They seem more like a fresher start candidate.
Oooof. Good point about Davis not being able to afford to fire McDaniels.
Like Washington, having to deal with multiple discriminatory lawsuits filed against them can’t be cheap.
And that massive Gruden lawsuit filed against the league, which he will win, pretty sure will hit Davis’s wallet hard. By the way, who’s the other owner that has the league in this mess. Yep, Danny boy.
Wouldn’t be surprised if the league would like to move on from Davis with the same intensity made public by the owners wanting to move on from Snyder?
Agree about Carr. Older, losing record and struggles in cold weather. Risky on Ravens part. Good news: he’s a company man, contract terms and amount are known.
In regards to that last paragraph, I hear ya. I’m hoping I’m all wrong there for sure. Cheers!
This one is hard to gauge. What do the Raiders want for him? It seems that trying to get rid of a QB you just signed to a new deal has to hurt his value. This’ll be interesting to watch.
Why did Austin Powers father hate the Dutch?
They want a pick and to save the few million dollars they would lose by releasing him.
It looks like the cap ramifications of trading him would be very similar, but I might be wrong.
What has Carr done to show that he’s a $40 mil a year quarterback? Mahomes is at $45 mil.
Good point.
Absolutely nothing, which is why it would be smart for the Raiders to dump him for a candy bar. Then sign Jimmy G for 2 years and draft a QB.
Why would other Sam’s want a Vegas castoff? Something in addition to money may be involved. If Carr is so good for the Jets, etc., etc., why isn’t he good for the Raiders?
*teams
The Jets would have made the playoffs with even decent QB play. Same with Washington. The Raiders added two very expensive veterans to a roster full of holes and tried to contend.
Carr’s cap hit for next year is slated to be 9th among QBs. That’s about right, considering how many of the QBs below him are on rookie deals (Burrow, Herbert, Hurts). He only has a $35 million cap hit next year, and the acquiring team won’t be paying all of it.
Mahomes signed his deal three years ago and was still on his rookie deal. The price of QBs has gone up, annual prices cost more on shorter deals, and the leverage is different.
Carr is a solidly good starting QB. Those are very expensive. I’m not saying I’d be *jazzed* about the price tag, but it’s not outlandish.
He’s a $40M QB in this market. As Oof pointed out, when Burrow, Herbert, Lamar, and Hurts sign extensions, he’ll be 13th of 32 QBs which is right about where his value is, IMO.
Carr has steadied a ship that’s been in nothing but a constant state of chaos. When people compare him to Mahomes, I just want to know, has Derek ever had an Andy Reid to coach him? No, he’s had an overrated Gruden and a parade of clueless clowns coaching him. Before Adams, when was the last time he had an all pro WR?
Carr is a good QB, and people are going to see it when he’s finally free of this sinking ship dragging him down. The Raiders are garbage. They’ve been garbage for two decades. Commitment to Excellence is the biggest lie there is. It’s a commitment to ineptitude. The Raiders suck. They’re always going to suck as long as Mark Davis owns that team.
I think people focus so much on Carr not being amazing that they erase or devalue the fact that he’s good. A lot of teams could’ve used good this season.
I agree. A lot of people are under this idea that every team is going to get a Mahomes, and they won’t. There is only one.
Sometimes a team has to be smart enough to take a good, quality QB and build around him to win. The Raiders aren’t, so they’re going to chase trying to find a QB that can mask their deficiencies in management. What they’re going to find is those are few and far between.
Oooof, I wanted to say that Carr might not be a top tier QB but he’s right at that cusp. Then I remembered his last game here against the Steelers. Maybe it was the sub zero temps, but he was missing receivers left and right, especially Renfro, who had beaten the secondary on his last throw
Point for me is, he’s a guy that’s hard to gauge. I’m sure he’ll land on his feet in all of this, but it will be interesting to see who he is surrounded with on offense
Well, the Jets have a lot of skill position talent on offense and a very strong defense. If their offensive line can stay healthier and add one tackle, they could be solid.
Bear in mind when it comes to Carr and the Jets that for all of Carr’s ugly moments, Zach Wilson’s ugly moments were another echelon. The man managed to wildly underthrow a flair pass his last start.
True. Carr had a star RB in Jacobs and an all-pro WR in Adams but, as you said, they had a lot of other holes. The Jets have rookie stars at RB and WR in Hall and Wilson. With a healthier team and more polished QB, the Jets should be formidable next season.
You Jet fans that want to trade for Carr have you thought about FA? One of your old QBs will be on the market next year. I am not sure if Seattle will resign Geno and if they do it won’t be for a huge contract. You could grab him save a pick and a ton of money. Just a thought.
Zach Wilson and 2 1sts, and probably some day 2/3 picks. Take on Wilson’s contract in and of itself is worth picks.
I’d be surprised if Carr returns even one 1st. And someone would at least trade a mid round pick for Wilson. Someone will always take a swing at resuscitating a highly picked QB.
Why wouldn’t Carr just veto all trade deals, and wait until they cut him so he can go where he wants, and have all the potentially interested teams bid him up? He has a no trade clause, so I don’t see what he gains by accepting a trade. He only has to wait a month, and the team that signs him will still have well over 2 months before the NFL draft and minicamp to determine their other needs and get him ready for next season. Free agency doesn’t even start until March, so he won’t have to worry about competing with the other free agent QB’s such as Brady and Jimmy G. This seems to make the most sense to me.
He absolutely should veto everything, and I hope he does. If the Raiders want to move on, make them do so for nothing in return.
You’d be an idiot to trade anything higher than a 4th round pick for him given that the Raiders are over a $40 million barrel.
It’s not that bad. He’s only got a $35 million cap hit next year and a cut or trade saves all but $5.6.
Some other commenters are right here that Carr holds the cards with his no trade clause. He could refuse and just sign where he wants. The key for the Jets could be who they sign as an OC. If it’s Greg Olson, that could be a sign.
I’d love for Carr to come back with his new team and win the Super Bowl in Vegas next year
So would I.
There’s a rumor floating around in NY, that if the Giants offer to Daniel Jones isn’t to his liking, or they don’t tag him, then the Jets will jump to sign him.
The Jets may cut a number of veterans for salary-cap reasons — that could be the first step toward #4 wearing green/white/black.
I say Rodgers for Carr and first round pick
I want that to happen only so I can laugh when Rodgers takes the bus and does donuts all over Hoodie Jr in the media. Lol
If I was carr I would not waive the no trade clause. Make them pay or release him and get nothing in return.
He also doesn’t get the big salary if he’s cut whereas a trade he still would. But no guarantee a trade would get that either. One thing we do know, he’s not getting $33M per year on the open market
I feel bad for carr because raiders did him bad . I feel his situation is similar to Matt went through with the lions . To think they thought josh McDaniels is a good coach is laughable
Titans would be interesting
Best move!!!
Derek Carr to the Dolphins
Raiders receive Tua Tagoviaola, Noah Igninighene, 2024 first round pick, 2023 third round pick and 2023 NE third round pick.
Derek Carr gets to play with 2 of the fastest and talented wide receivers in Hill and Waddle. They most likely bring back Gesicki, they have a good LT and decent o line. The head coach runs a good offence that should do really well in. The defence should be good with Phillips, Chubb, Howard, Jones and Holland. They just need to get a better defensive front.
Raiders get back a cheap young talented QB in Tua. Who would serve as the perfect understudy for Tom Brady to come in for a couple seasons. He’s had a terrible run with concussions so taking a back seat and learn from the goat could actually be really good for him. They also get a project CB in Noah who has really failed to live up to being a first round pick. However the raiders CB room is that weak that he would be a welcomed addition even for depth. Then they get a future first round pick and a couple third round picks.
Go get Tom Brady to be the QB, for hard for a couple Super Bowls and let Tua rest up and get better.
That’s way, way too much for Carr, and the Dolphins can’t afford him anyway.
According to reports they want Brady so if they give up Tua and Noah it’s frees up some money and if they can afford Brady they can afford Carr
The first round pick alone is too much.
Patriots should consider Carr so they have less of a Karen playing QB.
In his 9 years with the Raiders a 63-79 carrier record, hasn’t made a Pro Bowl since 2017. The Raiders will take a few practice footballs for Carr. The guy has no excuses this year with the tools he had around him.
