Tom Brady still has at least one more game to play for the Buccaneers, but that hasn’t stopped pundits (and, potentially, other NFL teams) from considering where he could play next season. During an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show (Twitter link), Albert Breer of TheMMQB said the Raiders are “unequivocally” looking into the possibility of adding the future Hall of Famer.
The Brady/Raiders comment was preceded by a question about Jimmy Garoppolo, with Breer noting that the Raiders are also doing their due diligince on the 49ers QB. In fact, Breer believes Derek Carr was thrown into a de facto competition with the two impending free agents, with Josh McDaniels, Dave Ziegler, and co. ultimately deciding they could squeeze more out of the quarterback position from someone else.
As Breer explains, when the current regime initially signed Carr to an extension, they thought they were locking in their equivalent of Alex Smith in Kansas City. In other words, the Raiders thought their veteran QB would be able to guide them to postseason performances while the front office identified their play-caller of the future. At 31, Jimmy G could allow the Raiders to continue with that plan, while Brady would obviously force the organization to go in a completely different direction as they load up for temporary contention.
With McDaniels and Ziegler having both worked alongside Brady and Garoppolo in New England, the connections are obvious, and it really wouldn’t be surprising if one of these QBs reunites with their former coach in Las Vegas. At the moment, the big question is which of these two quarterbacks is atop the Raiders’ wish list.
Elsewhere in Raiders QB news, the organization is set to meet with Carr soon. As Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal explains, the QB and the Raiders agreed to meet after the season to “discuss the situation and all the various options.”
It’s the Commitment to Excellence we’ve been reading about all these years
That was Al Davis. His son’s commitment is to Moe Howard haircuts.
I think Brady should look up the history of how guys careers have gone after signing with the Raiders
Vegas is also where Elvis went to die.
He died in Memphis…
Were I writing a biography on Elvis instead of a dig on Brady that would be a key fact check.
Elvis is not dead
Brady is at the Vegas residency stage of his career.
I’m no Carr fan, and he certainly had a horrible year. But do we really believe either of those guys are currently major upgrades over him?! Doesn’t seem so to me. This team was competitive last year under an interim HC.. So maybe that’s where the finger pointing for this seasons performance should start. But hey, I get it..the HC either has to blame someone else or himself.
It goes to show how completely clueless this regime is that they think they’re upgrading the QB position. Brady went 8-9 on a more talented football team, and Jimmy G can’t stay on the field. At this point in his career Brady isn’t better than Carr. At no point was Jimmy G ever better than Carr. It’s just another set of clowns trying to sell people on the mythical “Patriot way” by bringing in a bunch of ex-Pats, that’s it.
The only way to ever duplicate that run is to find a H.o.F QB, in his prime, willing to play for half his worth for most of his career. Good luck with that one.
Sounds like someone just doesn’t like the Patriots and is overvaluing Carr. I would say Brady and Jimmy are better values considering they’ll cost $10M+ less.
@mcmillankm- In Brady’s case, it depends how he treats LV. TB will have a dead cap higher for Brady in 2023 ($35M) than any team will be paying for Carr ($33.875M) due to the void years and signing bonus Brady agreed to. So ultimately, Vegas may end up having to kick the can down the road like Tampa did and pay Brady upfront or in some manner that makes it look like he’s agreeing to less than he’s actually taking.
I’d rather have Carr at $33.875M than Brady at $35M, assuming Brady signs an identical 1 year/$25M deal with a $20M bonus and everything guaranteed at signing.
At least with Carr under center the coaching staff had leads of 20, 17 (X2), and 14 to blow in the second half. I suppose it was also Carr’s fault to put forth a game plan to allow the 32nd ranked Saints offense to hang 24 on you. It was also Derek Carr’s fault that the “Offensive Genius” Josh McDaniel’s was out coached by “3 Day on the Job” Jeff Saturday. This same coaching staff was the only one to make Baker Mayfield look like a first ballet HOF lock.
Just saying……
Rose Bud going down with Carr
Baker in the ballet HOF – there’s a twist
Carr is not an inspirational leader. Nor does it appear that TB12 is either. Both of them are a bad deal, QB swapping for also-rans.
Garropolo is arguably better than either now, as somehow winning seems to come easy to him. Garropolo is fragile though, and a team wouldn’t be wise to invest a lot of money in him, like Lamar Jackson, just not available at the end of the season.
One and done Kirk Cousins makes $40 million/year in Minnesota so what do I know. Denver is paying Russell Wilson $45/million year to stink out the joint. Rookie contract QB seems to be the winning plan now. Get better scouts. The QB savings go into offensive line and WR for a more balanced offense.
Both seem like upgrades given how Carr performed this year and in the playoffs. But also you have to remember Carr is scheduled to be paid $33M in 2023.
*that’s playoffs last year of course
Any real Raider fan does not want TB12 in silver and black.
Two words: Tuck Rule.
(Also known as the Foxboro Screwjob since the call went against the Raiders.)
It would be extremely awkward to see Brady in silver and black but at the same time I understand the thought process. He’s extremely familiar with the system and would be a proven (albeit past his prime) stopgap while they look to find the long term solution at QB. Garappolo gives you a couple of extra years to find the next QB and he’s also extremely familiar with the offensive system. We saw what Stidham was able to do against one of the league’s toughest defenses and I think that has a lot to do with being familiar with what McDaniels offense looks like. What I absolutely don’t want is the Raiders drafting a QB with their first pick in the draft. We have so many gaping holes in other areas that need to be addressed before we will be even close to sustainable winning. I know most Raiders fans want McDaniels head on a platter already but I’m willing to give him and Ziegler a couple of seasons to get their system in place and see how it goes. Pulling the plug too early on a plan that takes time is never a good answer, just look at the revolving doors some teams have going for them the past few seasons.
Who else is potentially out there? Not sure the roster is a QB upgrade away. I think you’re right though, they should try to get younger at QB without spending an early draft pick on one. I guess that’s why so many GMs don’t work out.
Yeah throwing your faith into a first round QB is a very risky gamble to take. It obviously works out and there have been plenty of talented signal callers taken in the top 10 but there are also plenty that haven’t panned out. We are definitely more than a QB away and Derek Carr proved that for 9 seasons. Obviously he was failed by his front office and coaching staffs during that time but he’s not the guy to get this team over the hump. Im not saying Brady or Jimmy G are the guys that will get this team to the next level but they do know the offensive scheme and can bridge the gap until the right guy is found. In the meantime I’m praying that Ziegler can fix the other broken parts. He comes from a system that had a good offensive line and defense and I’d like to think that’s what he wants to build in Vegas.
Not a QB away, yet many of the “so-called” sportswriters had the Raiders contending for the Super Bowl this year. Worse than weather forecasters
To be fair to the experts, McDaniels set the team back offensively from where they were even with an interim coach.
Of course, any expert that was more than simply “cautiously optimistic that McDaniels had learned from previous mistakes and was now willing to adapt to his players instead of forcing them to adapt to him” was overestimating his growth process.
To be fair? They still should have factored in his experience in Denver knowing that Belichick proteges have too much ego to change.
That’s the second thing that I said. I agree. The roster wasn’t terrible though, at least before discarding Carr. It was decent, but not great. Now it’s more of a “need to see what happens” sort of team.
And that’s ignoring McDaniels, of course. Brady obviously can make most coaches look good (his current season proving that it’s not a totality), but McDaniels did seem to work best with him in New England. The irony is that one of main reasons that Brady wanted out was how conservative he felt that the New England gameplan was. Now, he may go back, if rumors are true.
What’s wrong with rolling with Stidham and investing the savings into offensive line? Improves both running and passing game.
Brady will be 46 years old. Behind a terrible offensive line. Dead meat waiting to happen
While facing Chris Jones and Joey Bosa four times a year.
One thing that is lost about the Bucs’ season this year is that their kind has been mostly good. Smith had some struggles, and the losses certainly made it worse than the last two years. But Brady has enjoyed pretty good protection in Tampa, and had good targets to dump the ball off to at all positions for the most part. He’s one of the least sacked quarterbacks in the league.
Now, a lot of that has to do with how quickly he gets rid of the ball due to the reads he makes pre and post snap, but you still need good receivers to get open and good protection to insure that. This is especially true in long developing routes, which Tampa has run plenty of in the last three or so years. The Raiders can offer a couple of good receivers right now, and perhaps a great receiving tight end in Waller if he is available, but the line will not offer the same protection as the Bucs’ line did for the last three or so years.
Now, when Brady was in New England, he and McDaniels had a pretty good offensive line for the most part. One thing that they did, when playing a better defensive line or when they used lesser quality players, was to get rid of the ball quickly and have their linemen do a kind of cut block lookalike when they would look like they were just dropping low. It hampered the opponents only for a second or two, but a quality defensive lineman could be held up long enough for Brady to quickly find a slippery receiver on a short route. I’d expect to see an attempt at that if Brady comes to Las Vegas with McDaniels.
Raiders attendance is horrible this year. Davis wants Brady in for next year to get ppl in for the games. It’s that simple
The stadium was full. So attendance was not horrible. It that season ticket holders sold to opposing fans. I only sold mine to friends who were Raiders fans.
The stadium is full every game. Highest ticket prices in the NFL.
This just tells me they are drafting a QB in the first round. Any one of Carr, Brady or Jimmy G will produce similar results while grooming a rookie for 1-2 seasons.
Cousins for Carr straight up. Who says no first?
Minnesota unless Vegas throws in a third round pick
NFL headquarters says no as well as all the owners.
Davis didn’t get the blessings of the league to move to Vegas to be 3rd from the bottom in home attendance. A Cousins will not goose it but a Brady can … and also the high wire act of the disgruntled Raven Lamar Jackson could as well.
Jackson to Vegas, Carr to Baltimore and with league backing and urgency. Yes, no, maybe?
Hahahahaha, insane
Carr for Rodgers, please take him out of GB
This has to be decided by February 15th. CArr has 0 reason agree to push the date back. He gets released he does his own destiny and can sign a longer deal. Raiders will be left with releasing car unless a team knows by February 15th they want to trade for him. Jets make a lot of sense but do they want to rush it with Jimmy G out there. So many qb needy teams and carr; Brady, Jimmy g very solid, Daniel jones is a free agent, Lamar jackson could be on the trading block.
How is this not tampering?
Does anyone believe that Brady, at his age, can lead this team anywhere? This only works if you draft a QB to sit behind him for a year or two. Even then, I don’t see them having enough talent to compete especially in that division.
