Since the Jets’ 2022 season crashed to a halt amidst their quarterback struggles, they are widely expected to be active in pursuing a veteran addition at the position. The team has been very public about doing so, and clarity could be emerging with respect to the names they are targeting.
CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reports that New York is “evaluating” Aaron Rodgers, Jimmy Garoppolo and Derek Carr. While he adds that the process is in its early stages, meaning more names will no doubt be added to that list, it comes as little surprise that those three are included in it. Rodgers was mentioned as a trade candidate for the Jets even before Nathaniel Hackett became the team’s new offensive coordinator, but increasingly so due to their connection with one another dating back to the latter’s time with the Packers.
Garoppolo was widely thought to be on his way out of San Francisco last offseason with the team turning its offense over to Trey Lance, but he ultimately remained on a re-worked contract. Now a pending free agent, he would not require trade compensation (as would be the case with Rodgers). His play after taking over for Lance appeared to help his value on the open market, but the 31-year-old then suffered what was initially believed to be a season-ending ankle injury. He may have been able to return in time for the Super Bowl, though the result of today’s NFC title game now makes that a moot point.
As for Carr, his days in Vegas are thought to be numbered, as the three-time Pro Bowler personally alluded to recently. He has begun doing “homework” on potential landing spots in a trade (since he has a no-trade clause), though the possibility remains that he get released and chooses his next team as a free agent.
That trio of passers is also one which Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network lists as targets for the Jets. New York showed signs of being a playoff contender in 2022 with a strong defense in particular, and a number of encouraging performances with a healthy Mike White at the helm of their offense. Interestingly, Pauline notes that “several” Jets players implored general manager Joe Douglas during their exit interviews to move on from Zach Wilson as their starting QB, in addition to firing offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur.
The latter move has already taken place, with Hackett now set to play a role in identifying the team’s top options to provide stability at the position relative to Wilson’s inconsistencies (although Pauline also notes that owner Woody Johnson still sees the 2021 No. 2 pick as salvageable). As the QB market takes shape, the Jets are sure to be key players in the case of several veteran passers.
It appears that any team that trades for Rodgers may compete for a year or two at most….then due to the cost in his salary and draft choices, that team will be in a major rebuild for years.
Don’t know who is desperate enough to trade for him.
The Jets because that franchise has been a dumpster fire for more than 40 years. They finally have a good coach with a good defense. They’ve swung and missed on so many QB’s in that time span that the owner is going all in now
It was a mistake with Farve. Would be again with Rodgers.
The trade for Favre was for a third round pick….hardly a massive mistake to take a chance. Also based on his following season he still could play at a high level.
Now ARod would be 2 future firsts which is a little bit different. That’s the kind of trade that sets your team back a lot if it doesn’t hit.
Any team that acquires Rodgers would only owe $15.79 MM in 2023. So the cost of his salary is not prohibitive.

Don’t follow the finances of the NFL.
What would the cost be in 2024 and what ramifications would his salary have towards cap space?
I find it hard to believe that a guy due $50m plus one year simply costs the team trading for him $15.79m and maybe 2 first round draft choices.
The new team would have a $15.79 million 2023 cap hit for Rodgers consisting of the $14.575 million of option proration bonus, his $1.165 million base salary and a $50,000 workout bonus. His 2024, 2025 and 2026 cap numbers would be $32,541,666, $51,141,166 and $45,291,668.
Whoops
Rodgers is a shell of what he was. Game manager at best. Please someone trade for him…..
Rodgers to the Jets makes a ton of sense!! Wilson can sit behind him and watch while hopefully learning how to be successful in the NFL. He has the arm talent. He needs to improve his footwork and be a better leader.
Today only shows that we need BRADY!!!
TB12 will NEVER sign in my
@GoHalos4Life:
Thank you for the breakdown! If I ran the Jets, I might consider taking on these cap hits. Although next year’s low hit is very attractive, it becomes difficult in 2025 and 2026, even more so after Rodgers did not have a good season at all.
However, I would not give up anything very valuable in a trade. Both the Packers’ self-inflicted problem with Love, whose fifth-year option is awaiting, and a solid FA option like Garappalo should lower the price considerably. But the Jets might be committed to Rodgers already – signing Hackett this early after his horrible stint with Denver may not help the Jets in negotiations with Green Bay.

Perhaps I’m becoming too cynical with age but this looks like another of those situations where the Jets aim at a big catch but end up with a band-aid solution like Joe Flacco.
Why would Rodgers go to the Jets? They have the same problem as the Packers, i.e., nothing close to Davante Adams in their receiving corps.
They have Garrett Wilson who had 1100 receiving yards with terrible QB play
Garrett Wilson also made the all-rookie team and is a finalist for the AP’s offensive rookie of the year.
If the Jets give up huge assets for Aaron Rodgers, they will regret it for years to come. Derek Carr is a much cheaper & younger, better option.
Lamar, starting safety Chuck Clark, and a 3rd round for GWilson, Sauce and two #1s. Jets have electric QB for the future. Who says no?
