Matthew Stafford is back in concussion protocol. Days after exiting the multi-step process, the Rams have once again placed their QB in concussion protocol, according to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com (on Twitter). Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic tweeted yesterday that Stafford would undergo further testing in Los Angeles to determine the next step.
Stafford exited yesterday’s loss to the Saints during the third quarter and didn’t return. The veteran QB previously entered concussion protocol following Los Angeles’ Week 9 loss to the Buccaneers. At the time, coach Sean McVay said he wasn’t aware of Stafford’s concussion symptoms during that game, but doctors later determined that it was “appropriate” for the QB to enter protocol, per ESPN’s Sarah Barshop.
The veteran QB had just exited concussion protocol on Friday after missing Week 10, and it seems like the organization may be proceeding with the utmost caution. Considering today’s development, it sounds like Stafford is at risk of missing another game.
“Yesterday, when we went into the tent, (we) got his symptoms, he checked out feeling pretty good, but we wanted to be over-precautious,” McVay said earlier today (via the team’s website). “But where he’s at right now, as it relates to his status, still in evaluation to see if we are going to put him in the protocol.”
Following last season’s Super Bowl championship, Stafford has struggled in 2022, perhaps due to lingering elbow issues. The Rams are 3-6 in Stafford’s nine starts, with the QB completing 68 percent of his passes for 2,087 yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Bryce Perkins filled in for Stafford on Sunday, completing five of his 10 pass attempts for 64 yards while adding another 39 yards on the ground. John Wolford, who is currently dealing with a neck injury, started in place of Stafford during LA’s Week 10 loss to the Cardinals.
The Rams owe Stafford three more years of big money – thus given that this season is already toast they should sit Stafford until he’s completely ready to get back on the field.
I rarely have good things to say about QBs but Matt is an old school warrior that will do whatever it takes to get on the field. He’s what team leadership is all about. I expect this will just be a temporary setback. Stafford is tougher than nails.
Yes, Matt has always been fun to watch; especially during the Megatron days in Detroit. Unfortunately these warrior type QBs do get hurt. Sometimes the injuries are minor, other times they are career ending. Andrew Luck comes to mind.
Here in Baltimore, ownership and the FO are keenly aware that Lamar J is definitely that warrior type. On Sunday, when we absolutely needed a score, he put his shoulder down and met head on at the goal line at Panther LB. 2 big bodies colliding and Lamar careened in to the end zone. WOW! He got up fine, but it’s been 5 years of this. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for the pop/guts in LJ but how much more of this until he possibly becomes an Andrew Luck?
That way of thinking by players and teams need to change. Tough as nails does not help with the long term damage done by concussions and not enough time to recover. Players and teams need to think long term…and life after football.
The NFL draft this year is going to be crazy.
Look at the teams that traded away their first round picks (broncos, saints, browns, and rams)
They would all have a top 10 pick if they kept it. But now the Seahawks, eagles, Texans, and lions all get a top 10 pick.
So teams that are in a rebuild and need a QB can draft a QB and a second potentially great player (Texans and lions)
The eagles can get best player available and get an absolute stud to add to their team.
And the Seahawks land somewhere in both of these scenarios.
At this point of the year, I bet no one would have thought the lions and Seahawks would have a better record than the rams and broncos after receiving those teams first round picks
I’m sure no one thought the New Jersey Devils would be riding a 13 game win streak and battling for first overall in the NHL. As a long time Devils fan I couldn’t be happier.
Matt should retire. Being in the broadcast booth pays exceptionally well these days.
You kidding me….his wife wouldn’t hear of it…she’s to into being in the limelight as evidenced by every SB pic from last year……..looks like a loon hanging all over him!
