Franchises looking for an upgrade at receiver should have their opportunities before the trade deadline comes, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. While the Panthers seem determined to hold onto D.J. Moore, it appears that Texans wideout Brandin Cooks, Steelers receiver Chase Claypool, and Broncos pass catcher Jerry Jeudy are all names generating interest in the trade markets.
Cooks is in his third season with his fourth NFL team after getting traded three times before. If Cooks does get dealt again, he’ll tie running back Eric Dickerson for the most trades in a career with four. Cooks has been dependable as a top target at every stop of his career. There have only been two seasons, one being his rookie year, in which he failed to reach 1,000 yards receiving. He’s a veteran that can lead a room and add production on all levels of the passing game.
Claypool is in his third season with the Steelers after getting drafted out of Notre Dame. Claypool exploded onto the scene as a rookie, racking up 873 receiving yards and 11 total touchdowns. He continued a lot of the same production in his sophomore season, totaling 860 yards but only found the endzone twice. This year, with new quarterbacks, Claypool’s on track to finish along the same stat lines, but, with rookie wideout George Pickens starting to out-produce him, the Steelers may be seeing Claypool as an expendable asset.
Jeudy is also a third-year receiver who was expected to have a breakout year this season for the Broncos. His production has been plenty serviceable so far this year, but, as Denver’s offense continues to sputter, the team might be shifting into sell-mode. Jeudy represents one of the more talented and promising assets in Denver. If quarterback Russell Wilson fails to get the Broncos to be more competitive, Jeudy and his rookie contract could be headed somewhere new.
There are plenty of teams who are hungry for some new receiving options. The Ravens have been relying on Devin Duvernay and Demarcus Robinson as Rashod Bateman deals with injuries. The Packers has seen injuries hurt their production, as well. They’ve been utilizing Allen Lazard alongside a mix of whoever is healthy out of Sammy Watkins, Randall Cobb, and a pair of rookies. Also in the NFC North, the Bears could certainly use some proven playmakers to supplement a receiving corps led by Darnell Mooney and Dante Pettis.
We’re bound to see some fireworks as the trade deadline nears. It’s starting to look like the stars may align to move some productive pass catchers to needy homes.
Man, trading Jeudy would be absolutely awful for Denver. They just started this run with Wilson, and though it hasn’t yet gone well, Jeudy is still a very talented receiver who was a first round pick. I do not get the logic of “Well, this group of players is a strength, so let’s weaken it” for no real reason. Denver is missing picks, but it seems that getting rid of Jeudy will leave them just spending one to replace him within the next two years.
Both Patrick and Sutton have already injured themselves seriously. Hamler for some reason has not been widely used in the offense. Jeudy is still on his rookie deal, and brings a lot to the table long term for Denver. Trading him would be insane. Even trading Chubb, who I’m not as high on as others, would be silly, especially considering the huge contract Gregory has been signed to essentially means that they’ve picked him over Chubb in that scenario. The defense is playing well and should continue to do so in the future with those players.
Denver is not going to restock on picks to replace them in the next year. I would pump on the brakes on being sellers if I were them just because this year has been awful. Fire Hackett, start again with a roster that will be still very talented.
this is the correct take
If Denver trades Jeudy the Front office needs to go.
Titans could definitely use a WR, but with our OL this bad a WR prob won’t help.
When was the last time the Steelers traded a starter during the season? You probably know the answer.
True, but if offered a 3rd rounder they should take it. Claypool won’t get a second contract from the Steelers and might not sign a big enough deal to warrant a 3rd in the compensatory formula either.
Jerry Juedy honestly still has WR1 potential and I could see him having multiple 1k yards seasons in the future.
So far he hasn’t worked out in Denver but I’d love to see him on Green Bay with ARod, or even in Jacksonville with Trevor Lawrence that would be a deadly duo
I think it would be hilarious if the Broncos traded Jeudy. Trade Jerry to Seattle for a 6th Rd pick.
I get that Tomlin is going to sacrifice potential wins this year in order for Pickett to cut his teeth as a starter. I’m all for it, because this team was going nowhere
And while I’m not a big fan of Claypool’s, I just never went for the idea of making a strength into a weakness
I’d like to think Claypool’s maturity issues are behind him and with Pickens here, I actually look at him as more of an asset than the inconsistent Johnson. Why trade anyone from a strong group of receivers, unless you’re going to get incredible offers and/or Austin is ready?
Focus on hiring a new offensive coordinator for ‘23, beefing up both lines, getting a linebacker, a DB and a new punter.
