In a move which comes as little surprise at this point, the Panthers have fired head coach Matt Rhule, the team announced on Monday. Defensive passing game coordinator/secondary coach Steve Wilks will replace him on an interim basis.
Talk of Rhule being on the hot seat began at the onset of the 2022 season, his third with the team. It was at that point that he was able to make significant strides at both Temple and Baylor, leading to expectations that he would be able to do the same along a similar timeline in the NFL. Instead, the team has started the season 1-4, dropping his overall coaching record to 11-27.
Offensive struggles have been at the heart of Carolina’s performances under Rhule. The team has ranked no higher than 24th in the league in scoring during his tenure, something which some hoped would turn around this season with the acquisition of quarterback Baker Mayfield and a return to health from running back Christian McCaffrey. The unit has underperformed in 2022, however.
That led to increased speculation that a mid-season firing could take place. Owner David Tepper had insisted on remaining patient with the 47-year-old, though, as recently as late September. Two losses since have been marked by further underwhelming performances, and reports of tension between Rhule and offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. The fact that Mayfield played part of yesterday’s game against the 49ers on an injured left foot did little to help his or Rhule’s job security.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweets that Rhule had the option to leave Carolina in favor of a return to the college ranks, but chose to stay. Now, he will likely be among the top candidates to fill a number of openings which currently exist at high-profile programs. ESPN’s Adam Schefter adds (via Twitter) that Rhule is still owed more than $40MM on the seven-year, $62MM contract he signed upon arrival in Charlotte.
With Rhule gone, the Panthers will move forward with Wilks heading the staff. A presence on Carolina’s sidelines from 2012-17, the 53-year-old spent the following season as head coach of the Cardinals. His tenure there lasted only one year, however, after the team went 3-13. The nature of his dismissal from Arizona led to Wilks joining Brian Flores’ ongoing racial discrimination lawsuit against the NFL and several clubs.
He spent 2019 as the Browns’ defensive coordinator, then one year removed from coaching. In 2021, Wilks was the DC at Missouri, before returning to the Panthers for this campaign. He will now have the remainder of the 2022 season to try and orchestrate a turnaround, while auditioning for the full-time role of head coach. On that point, Rapoport adds that Wilks will be given “serious consideration” for a permanent posting (video link).
The performance of Wilks and the rest of the team will now be worth watching over the coming months. Regardless of their ability to turn the season around, the Rhule era has officially ended after less than three seasons.
Wish we could fire Tepper too.
Why? That makes no sense
‘Cause he’s a terrible owner. You really don’t know this?
Giving an unproven coach 62 million over 7 years was completely stupid. As the owner he should be banned just out of stupidity
If they did, then Shahid Khan dodged a bullet
Shad, Dan S, Bidwill’s, Bears & Lions ownership, Jets, Chargers, a long list of awful owners who could care less about the their franchises performance.
Don’t forget the Patriots. They haven’t won anything in 4 years.
Shouldn’t take too long to clean out his office. He didn’t bring much!
Auburn on line 1
This is the greatest day in Panthers history.
He’s gonna get a nice paycheck to walk away
Right??
There is no way that he gets the $40 million owed, but he will still get a ton of dough!
Urban Meyer’s available… too soon?
He’ll never get another NFL job after what he did in and to Jacksonville.
I’m sure the Panthers will Rhule the day they fired him.
From someone who witnessed the Wilks Era in AZ, best of luck to Panther fans.
What’s wrong with Wilks?
He’s an interim HC, they are rarely ever good anyway. McAdoo wouldn’t be any better, and Wilks probably has more ‘upside’ to improve as a coach since Arizona than McAdoo does since NY, and his offense is already terrible.
From a fan who had to endure the regimes of MacAdoo and Judge on the Giants…..good luck with that upside and time to improve crap!
To be fair to Wilks, he only got one year and exactly zero support from an indecisive upper management unit impatient for a turnaround. The sheer amount of investment that has in the Cardinals since his firing versus his hiring is enormously different. I’m not saying that Wilks is/would have been a good head coach, but I am saying that Arizona absolutely did not support him or his team during his tenure.
Yea, that certainly explains why he was 3-13……Maybe he should have called the 800 Support Hotline…Yikes!
Not funny. At all.
YEah Wilks is terrible. Out of the frying pan and into the fryer
Thank you, sweet baby Jesus!
University of Houston Cougars need to get rid of Dana and get Matt.
Carolina should’ve given McAdoo the sack as well. He made the Giants a joke with his derp football and was doing the same to the Panthers.
I could not agree more. I suppose that they still need someone to call the plays, but I hold McAdoo just as accountable as Rhule for the poor showing-even moreso for the offense specifically.
It’s about time!
yes, but this isn’t much of an improvement
The year is already lost and the Rhule contract is already sunk. Going forward, at least they have a tackle tandem, one very good receiver, and some good pieces on defense. And if they have a top two pick, they might actually find a QB they start for more than one year. It’s not the worst destination for a coaching candidate. As for Rhule, he got paid a fortune to fail, and I’m sure he’ll be some state’s highest paid government employee by spring.
Perfect take. One of those college programs will take their shot at him.
No they won’t.
Other than having to deal with David Tepper, Carolina could be an attractive coaching destination. The division is not stacked very well long term at the moment-the Bucs are more vulnerable than they appear, and much of the team is built to win now and (Brady, Jones, Godwin, Mason) may be gone soon. I don’t have faith personally in Dennis Allen, but the Saints could go either way in the next few years. The Falcons are still rebuilding and haven’t shown much promise yet. Carolina could have a shot to rebuild in a division that lacks a clear hierarchy to keep them out of competition.
The thing is, David Tepper is one of the most hands-on owners in the league, and has had difficulty in dealing with local governments in building new facilities on a few occasions already. The environment that creates in building a culture will be difficult to navigate for a new coach.
So basically tepper is the NFL version of Arte Moreno? Good dod! I feel your pain panthers fans!
Division strength can shift quite suddenly. Who would have thought the NFC East would currently have 3 teams at 4-1 or better? As for Tepper, he’s just another rich owner with no clue about sports. Anyone coaching for him is immediately at a disadvantage.
The Panther Defense Sucks!!!
They couldn’t stop me!!
Wait, what?
Well, as Norm Van Brocklin said many moons ago
#20 You couldn’t cover me… his player that was standing next to him, gently reminded him and said, I think he could… then Norm started laughing
Anyway, the Panthers were poorly coached
#HireJonGruden!!!
Wilks lost Rock-Paper-Scissors to McAdoo, I guess…Rhule will be laughing all the way to the bank, as many colleges are probably blowing up his phone already. Unless he has some sort of clause in it that prohibits him getting another job in some time frame, he shouldn’t be unemployed long.
I can see him taking one of two college jobs in the coming weeks. He loves taking jobs that are beaten down and build them back up. Unfortunately he couldn’t do that in Carolina. So look for him to be hired by either Nebraska or Arizona State.
Start trading players for picks. They have limited picks as is due to shipping a ton out for 3 average to below average QB’s.
Draft capital can’t rescue poorly run franchises. The Browns had 36 picks from 2015-17 and parlayed that into 4 wins.
Nebraska and Auburn on line 1
Going to Wilks is like going from the frying pan into the fire….Yikes….feel sorry for Panthers fans!
Not sure if “from frying pan in to the fire” will happen, but this does seem like an odd promotion. Steve is a Riveria guy who Tepper moved on from to bring in Rhule. Odd? Yes? No? Maybe?
I’m slightly surprised they didn’t just play the string out with him and make a change after the year. I mean they have a few good pieces to build on, but no one is fixing that team this season. May as well go for the high pick.
It was a change that needed to be made at some point though. They chose now.
Don’t start a sentence with “I mean.” You sound effeminate, like a preteen girl.
Like a preteen girl who tells people to kill themself? Maybe you should take a long look in the mirror. How have you not been banned yet?
Cool story, Jack. I mean if I cared what you thought, I’d really take that under consideration. But hey, here’s the thing: I don’t.
That’s cool then just be a fem. There are lots of nice men that you can meet that just love valley girls like you.
You JJG are the type of commenter who shouldn’t be allowed on this site……you think you’e too cool for all and in the mirrow nothing but a fool.
Please kill yourself.
