The Eagles made a splash earlier today when they acquired defensive end Robert Quinn from the Bears, and it sounds like Chicago is picking up most of the player’s tab. According to Albert Breer of TheMMQB (on Twitter), the Bears are picking up $7.1MM of Quinn’s remaining 2022 salary. This means Philly will only be responsible for around $700K, which is the veteran’s minimum.

It was speculated that the Bears were able to garner a fourth-round pick because they would be covering much of Quinn’s 2022 salary. The lineman is in the middle of a five-year, $70MM deal, but he has non-guaranteed base salaries of $14MM in 2023 and $13MM in 2024.
Quinn was rumored to be on the block for the rebuilding Bears, but considering the player’s salary, it presumably took a bit to find a trade partner. When the team was ultimately offered a fourth-round pick from the Eagles, GM Ryan Poles said he jumped at the opportunity.
“It just made too much sense in what we are trying to do here in building a championship team,” Poles said of his trade haul (via Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com). “I know the Eagles are really fortunate to have him. Part of the tough part about this job is having to make tough decisions. You also know that you are tweaking the fibers of your locker room.
“That’s really where you have to compartmentalize those two different areas,” Poles added (via ESPN’s Courtney Cronin on Twitter). “You know, for the future I think it’s going to give us the ability to continue to grow and build our foundation that we’re trying to build. That is the exciting part.”
Poles provided more insight into trade negotiations, noting that assistant GM Ian Cunningham, who previously worked in the Eagles front office, “was instrumental” in getting the trade done, per Cronin. The general manager also wouldn’t commit to any more trades taking place, adding that “it’s hard to tell” if trades will materialize and “there’s not a ton going on right now.”
This looks more like a gift than a trade!
For both teams I think. Philly going all in to improve an undefeated team for a Super Bowl win. The Bears aren’t going anywhere this year. They’re trying to build assets for a rebuilding team. They now have additional draft capital and around 125 million of cap space next year.
Dude has 1 sack in 7 games let’s pump the brakes a bit. And don’t give me that he had no help in Chicago. Last year most of his 18.5 sacks came after Mack was injured for the year.
Looked better in a 3-4 last year than in this year’s 4-3
Please!! The birds rotation of linemen is uber talented and Quinn will take off in philly. Sour grapes will turn sweet in birdland.
Uber talented? Who is the best player on their line? Fletcher Cox is a shell of himself. Brandon Graham is solid but not really a pass rush threat. Josh Sweat is overpaid for subpar production. Davis is rookie. Not sure Quinn is really going to take off like you think.
My oh my 3rd in the league in sacks makes you look foolish.
While you have a point, consider the effects that the rumors and obvious lack of commitment had on Quinn’s play. It’s decently well known that Quinn can be mercurial, but it’s still understandable that a player would feel less motivated than normal if his team is known to be trying to move on from him.
That may be true but not in this case. His young teammates held him in very high regard and made him a permanent captain. He worked hard and it made a big impression. He also doesn’t have Khalil Mack on the other side this year either.
Oh yeah, I have no doubts regarding Quinn’s treatment of his teammates. We heard similar things about Roquan Smith during his negotiations with the team. I don’t know Quinn or his attitude, but I could certainly see that he could be less motivated under those circumstances than with a team committed to him. Of course, he’s still a pro, and wouldn’t mail it in on the field.
eagles doing all this just to get bounced in the first round of the playoffs
LOL by who?
Da Bears!
Remove foot from mouth before you get athletes foot of the tongue.
Only a fourth round draft pick? Man Christmas came early for the eagles. I swear our GMs never have any brains!
Only a fourth round pick? Quinn has one sack and is rated the 124th edge rusher in the league. That is less than some street free agents being paid the minimum and playing half the snaps. Maybe Poles gambled in the off season, but I doubt it. To get a 4th now is a gift and a job well done.
Agreed.
I felt that way initially, but its a 4th rounder for a guy who was not producing at a high level this season.
It’s interesting that Poles mentioned the Bears locker room. Who is suppose to provide defensive leadership in there? I hope they aren’t banking on Roquan.
The Bears unfortunately have had that issue several times recently. Management hasn’t shown much commitment to individual players, and it seemingly has an effect.
I suspect that Eddie Jackson must be their preferred answer to your question.
Apparently the price of a 4th round pick is $7M..Does create about a massive amount of cap room for 2023.
i dont think the cap space savings from the trade would matter either way as 2023 and 2024 were non guaranteed years according to the article and they could have cut him if they chose.
From what I heard about the deal it still does somehow free up some space next season, now that may be due to just him not being here anymore though…
Jackson, jaylon Johnson, brisker looks like a natural leader. Justin Jones. Doesn’t really matter all that much. They’re going to look vastly different on both sides next year and quinn wasn’t giving much anyway.
The worst thing Poles could possibly do is go out and throw all the money they have next year around. I certainly hope that he realizes that they have a couple more years of trading DOWN draft picks to acquire more picks as the roster was a total quagmire when he got here. FA can be a great tool for getting talent if you spend it smartly which certainly hasn’t been the case around here lately. In the case of the Bears, MORE picks is definitely better because it would take about 6 years to get back the wasted talent that Pace traded away and got us here in the first place. I think Poles is doing the right things. Thumbs up.
Throwing some money around is fine as long as it is on the right guys. He is not going to hit on everyone, but a 75% hit rate would be a huge improvement and help them to be a much better football team. I like the idea of larger up-front deals with less commitment. That way if you miss, the sting doesn’t last as long. This team needs to add a lot of talent. Poles looks like he has a plan which is nice to see. Hopefully, he sticks to it and finds some playoff berths for this team in the near future.
I think Poles did the best he could with such a limited amount of draft capital last season. What was promising is Gordon (who is looking better and better every week) and Briskter. However, then you have Velus Jones who cannot break through on this group of WRs and a bunch of OL that will need time to develop. Robinson could be a steal of the draft if he can continue to improve. If Pole goes out next draft and gets a good couple of OL, a WR, and a NT, in the first four picks they are looking better. Free agents are good mostly for the interim but in the NFL you have to build the team with the draft ultimately, and I think Poles gets that.
In fact when I think of all the money and draft picks Pace wasted it certainly is mind boggling. Draft picks for Trubisky, Who he traded up from 3 to 2 to get a guy they could of had anyway. All the picks he traded for Mack who had one good year. The money he paid Mike Glennon. 17 million? Really? The trade ups for Anthony Miller, Leonard Floyd, Missing on Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes probably still sends him Christmas cards. Draft bust James Daniels. Fields, Jury still out but that certainly has Trubisky written all over it. It’s amazing they can still field any team much less one that’s 3-4. Poles should get Executive of the Year IMO.
Mahomes should, as I do not think he is the ‘Mahomes’ he is if the Bears have him. Nagy as his QB coach or whatever he is on that team still makes me chuckle.
John Fox would have been his coach……
Reread what I wrote, was not talking about him on the Bears, talking about the ‘now’ with him sitting on the bench with Nagy.. fairly sure John Fox is no where around the Chiefs roster.
Poles looks like he has shored up the defensive back field. They need to sign RoQuan but they will will have nearly $120M basically twice the next teams available cap space to add a couple receivers, OL help and defensive front. I see them picking somewhere between 4-6 in 2023 which will allow them to choose the best WR/OT or DE available.
With anywhere between 4 and 6 QBs expected to go in the 1st round the Bears should have the option to take a loaded trade package for their pick if they feel Fields is their guy. Anderson or Carter look to be great additions to their DL if they stand pat. If they are not all in on Fields, then it looks like they will have some options at QB as well.
The Bears generally don’t extend players who try to play hardball in negotiations. They dumped Matt Forte and Allen Robinson so Roquan will likely go next.
If Roquan is still on this team after the trade deadline, I see the Bears finishing with closer to a .500 record than farther away from it. My guess is somehow the Bears beat 4-5 more teams this season (remember they get to play Detroit twice and lets be honest, GB at home looks more like a good chance at a win than a loss) and put themselves at a top ten pick if they are lucky (given on how many other teams are godawful this season). Now, if Roquan goes? Easily a top five pick for the draft. As much as I want to dig on Roquan and his antics, he easily is the best player on the team right now.
In a perfect world the Bears extend Roquan and he is an All Pro for them. In the real world he is probably dealt for picks if not this week then surely this off season. Poles needs to be making at least 10 picks for each of the next 2 years however he can get them If he can. As for Jones it takes WR’s more time to develop than other positions for some reason. Just the complexity of the systems compared to college. The more troubling thing to me is his inability to hang onto the football. I expect he will be better next year and WR is one of the easiest positions to fill in FA. They should trade their 1st round pick down and get some more picks. Not far but enough to get some more picks. Plus unlike Pace, He really needs to hit on that 1st round pick. Whoever it is.
WRs take more time.. Just like Terrell and White? If Jones cannot break through on this group of WRs then Im not expecting much out of him (though I hope Im wrong), its bad enough he cannot even catch a punt.
This is just my opinion but:
1. Sign a good #1 WR in FA. Mooney is a great # 2 but needs somebody to occupy the other teams best CB. Hope Jones improves and the rest are decent depth at this point.
2. Draft a C. Patrick isn’t the answer and maybe get one in FA if they don’t like Mustipher but I think he’s getting better but….
3. Draft a MLB to replace Roquan and let Morrow slide to off ball where he belongs.
4. Draft a 3 technique DT. They’re kind of old there.
5. I’m of the opinion that the Oline isn’t bad. They’re playing a Rookie and 2 2nd year guys on the line and one of those hardly played at all last year. I think Jenkins and Borom can be the guards for years and Braxton Jones would be much better at RT but that’s just me. See if they can get a LT in FA.
I think that makes them way better next year without a huge FA investment. With at least 3 picks in rounds 3 and 4 now, that’s where you can find some good LB’s and depth pieces.
Let’s see how much of that he can get done.
