Despite being in the midst of a three-game skid, and losing five of their last six games, the Buccaneers are not expected to make any big moves to acquire players before the trade deadline, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. General manager Jason Licht has been known to be willing to make moves that could improve the team’s standing for a playoff run, but, right now, the team seems to be fine with where they’re at.
The Buccaneers don’t seem to have a ton of holes in their roster. They haven’t been very successful running the ball, ranking 31st in the NFL for rushing yards. They likely don’t feel the need to trade for a big name running back. Despite veteran pass-catching back Giovani Bernard spending the last six games on injured reserve, Tampa Bay still has Leonard Fournette. The team has also spent two third-round picks in the last three drafts on Ke’Shawn Vaughn and Rachaad White.
A more likely reason for their rushing struggles is the offensive line losses they’ve dealt with this year. The retirement of last year’s starting guard Ali Marpet, the loss of their other starting guard, Alex Cappa, to free agency, and the long-term injury suffered by starting center Ryan Jensen have forced the Buccaneers to piece together a new configuration. Last year’s Buccaneers weren’t one of the league’s better rushing offenses and, with these setbacks, they’ve turned into one of the league’s worst.
Fans may also be looking for the team to make a move on defense, where the team ranks last in the league in rushing yards allowed. The Buccaneers don’t necessarily think a change in personnel is in order from an outside source, as they have several players who have missed time due to injury set to make comebacks soon. Tampa Bay hopes to get defensive lineman Akiem Hicks back soon, which should be a huge help. They’re also looking for cornerbacks Carlton Davis and Sean Murphy-Bunting to make returns soon. Unfortunately, the loss of outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett hurts the defense’s chances for improvement a bit.
If any changes were to be made, it’s looking more and more likely that it will come on the coaching end and not on the players’ end, according to Armando Salguero of OutKick.com. With an offense that has been deemed as “under-performing” there is speculation that the team could have retired head coach and current consultant Bruce Arians or offensive consultant Tom Moore pair up with offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich to bring the offense back up to par.
Currently, head coach Todd Bowles says the coaching staff and their duties will remain intact, but, if the team continues to flail in what could easily be the last season for quarterback Tom Brady, look for the team to get creative with their use of the coaching staff.
Todd Bowles is not a head coach (29-46). Brady made this bed, however, so now he needs to lie in it.
I blame Leftwich more than anyone.
Bradys arm is pretty weak tho too
He went 14-34 in his last three years for the Jets and the Bucs saw that and were like, sign me up.
Tampa should at least inquire on some impending free agents.
Damien Harris Nelson Agholor Jakobi Meyers from NE. Give Brady another receiving option.
Evan Engrams having a solid season out in JAX
Bradley Bozeman Rodney Hudson at center
the qb has been more of an issue than his recievers.
surprised they weren’t more interested in bringing back Suh, given the struggles on the D line that was borderline elite against the run the last 2 years prior
Between this comment and the one saying his arm is weak it’s obvious you don’t watch the games or know anything about football, you just hate Tom.
Is he playing like an MVP? Far from it, yet if he’s not running away with stats haters like you thinks he sucks lol.
He leads the NFL in yards, has essentially the same completion % as the last two years, was top 3 in drops before this last game, only has one int, that line is LAST in pass block win rate and has the worst rushing attack in NFL history since the merger. Tom has to get the ball out MUCH faster than ever so big plays don’t happen a lot. Has thrown for plays with almost 60 air yards and you think his arm is weak? Lol
Look, he can no longer carry teams like he used to. He has missed some throws that have been costly for sure. But he is FAR from this teams big problem. That line is atrocious and leftwich can’t scheme around it. Most vanilla, predictable play calling ever. Also that D is much worse than it has been. I get they get tired when O can’t sustain drives, but the effort is atrocious for pro athletes (looking and you devin white). They are now last against the run. All of these issues together point to coaching.
Call out Tom, but call out the major issues too.
dude his passes are hitting the ground 6 yards infront of his recievers
it’s obvious you’re having trouble coping
tom = Matt Ryan.. get over it
Really don’t think Todd is the coach , he’s a face for the “diaster” , but I lean more towards the reporter’s view on this .. They will get better by virtue of just getting their own guys back , interior O-line could use an add , should a quality vet hit the open market, maybe a scheme tweek can help with the run D , maybe a new blitz package or two
The Bucs need a QB, but nothing better will be available via trade just now.
See my post above. Tom is not the issue with this team. Far from it. Just cuz he hasn’t been MVP level (or even close to it) doesn’t mean he’s the big problem.
He is definitely a distraction.
What? All of a sudden Leftwich doesn’t know how to call plays and run an offense? I’ve spent the last 3 years hearing how great he was and that he’s a head coaching candidate everywhere. The O line stinks, Fournette is not a guy you can count on and Tom’s arm has regressed and his head is screwed up because he’s worried his now ex wife is getting it elsewhere. The Bucs season is toast and they need a reset this coming off-season. Arians, Bowles, Leftwich and Brady all need to go.
It’s a shame they have no run game. I miss Doug Martin.
These generational QBs always make their OCs look amazing. Peyton, Brady and Rodgers all had their hot commodity coordinators crap the bed as coaches.
Trade Brady to NE
Brady has passed his expiration date.
Oh they’re making a move.
And his name is ROBERT JAMES GRONKOWSKI!!
The Miami tampering story is huge. Is the NFL trying it’s darnedest to keep a lid on it? And Tampa is caught up in it? Obviously there’s the Brady part of it but Arian going to a consultant position (IE no longer a Bucs employee) seems suspicious and happened when this Miami story was actively in the news. Oh, the timing here? This is the main cause of the Bucs demise? Management is fragmented over it. Then there’s Gisele. She knows stuff? Doesn’t want any part of it? Gets an attorney with the purpose of keeping her life and assets separate from Tom’s?
