The Commanders moving Chase Young to their reserve/PUP list sidelines him for at least four games, but Young may not make his debut in Week 5. A longer layoff appears in the cards.
Young is not expected back until closer to midseason, Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports notes. The former Defensive Rookie of the Year is recovering from a right ACL tear, and the reconstructive surgery required a graft from his left patellar tendon. This has pointed to a longer rehab timetable.
Ron Rivera called Young’s ACL tear a bit more severe than Logan Thomas‘. Despite suffering his ACL tear in mid-December, Thomas came off Washington’s active/PUP list earlier this week. Young went down Nov. 14. Week 10 — a Monday-night game against the Eagles — would mark a year since the injury. Though, a precise return date will likely not be known for a bit. Washington’s bye week is not until Week 14.
Although Montez Sweat is healthy, after the team’s 2019 first-round pick missed a chunk of last season due to injury, the Commanders did not make any notable investments to fill in for Young during the season’s first half. The team has former seventh-round pick James Smith-Williams, who made six starts last season, and third-year edge Casey Toohill. A former seventh-round Eagles pick, Toohill also made six 2021 starts. The two combined for 3.5 sacks last season.
Young, 23, was not as effective in 2021 as he was during a standout rookie season. The Commanders being cautious with the former No. 2 overall pick should be the expectation, given his potential long-term future with the team. A lot will be on Sweat and the team’s bevy of acclaimed interior D-linemen until the Commanders’ front-four anchor returns.
Fire Ron now. Can’t build either a competent offense or defense.
So, you are calling for a Head Coaches job 2 weeks prior to the start of the season because of a player’s injury?
arty! • 6 hours ago
Fire Ron now.
Who do you suggest that the team hires as a Head Coach?
Since he’s 14-19 in DC & this is shaping up to be another sub 500 year, might as well get a head start on the coaching search. All those 1st round picks on defense only to be a middle of the road D last year says a lot. Trading for Wentz? Tons of awful moves. I don’t see a playoff contending roster this year.
I said it when they fired Jay. They only interviewed Ron, why? So many good coordinators out there to at least speak with. But DC is so inept as an organization, they didn’t realize they had a great HC in waiting already in their organization, Sean McVay.
Not going to argue that the Redskins staff was loaded with talent, not just Sean McVay. Let’s not forget Matt LeFleur, Mike McDaniel, Raheem Morris, Kyle Shanahan, Jim Haslet, and even Matt Cavanaugh. It has been well publicized that the front office was incorrect for blowing everything up and cleaning house however, much of that was tied to Bruce Allen.
SO with two weeks to go before the season starts, who do you suggest is brought in to be the savior? To fire the head coach at this point in the pre-season, you had better have one hell of a bullet in the chamber.
BoB was fired 4(?) games into the season. Some are canned at the halfway point, others get the pink slip in Dec., or after the season. Why waste a season on, what pretty much everyone agrees to, is another sub 500 team?
Ron should have been fired prior to making the Wentz trade. I can’t think of the last time a ‘QB1’ was dumped by 2 franchises w/ similar concerns to work ethic and not listening to his coaches in back to back years.
I don’t know all of the coaches on their team, but someone could step up. It happens 2-4 times each year. A coordinator is promoted to HC.
OK… please allow me to rephrase the question.
You are Martin Mayhew and on August 28, 2022 you have decided to take the Commanders in another direction. The first step is to fire the head coach Ron Rivera. Who will you hire to take the field on September 11, 2022 VS Jacksonville as the Commanders new Head Coach?
One of the coordinators. I said that. It happens every year. Some coordinators are promoted to interim HC. It’ll happen this year. Maybe not in DC, but it will happen.
Dell Rio (DC), Turner (OC) or Kaczor (STC) are the top guys on the staff. Del Rio has HC experience, and both the OC & STC have 3 some years on the staff.
So as the GM you are going with one of the coordinators. Is it D-Cord Del Rio who put together the Defense that is “All those 1st round picks on defense only to be a middle of the road D” or the O-Cord Turner who clearly backed “Trading for Wentz?” the “last time a ‘QB1’ was dumped by 2 franchises w/ similar concerns to work ethic and not listening to his coaches in back to back years.”
Guess you are going to choose Nate Kaczor …
This is how you arty! think is the best possible path forward for the Washington Commanders.
Give up man. Ron sucks. If you think he’s great w/ a sub 500 record, that’s on you. The only thing he had to offer during the interview was he wasn’t white so therefore the Rooney rule was complied with.
I gave on the Skins years ago. I had I hopes when Dan bought them. Then saw him disintegrate the franchise. I haven’t been a fan for well over a decade.
This team has been pathetic far too long… and ownership has been in the same boat!
Granted, but I’m not sure what any of them could really have done about Young tearing his knee up.
The team of pathetic… ownership down
