The Ravens entered today with the least cap space in the league, so a move to generate some financial wiggle room was likely necessary at some point. To that end, the team has re-worked cornerback Marlon Humphrey‘s deal, reports ESPN’s Field Yates (Twitter link).
The Ravens are converting $8.965MM – almost the entirety of Humphrey’s scheduled $10MM base salary – into a signing bonus. As a result of the move, Baltimore will add just over $7MM in cap space. Those funds will give the team some much-needed flexibility to make additions during or after training camp.
Humphrey is no stranger to restructures; the two-time Pro Bowler re-worked his deal last September. He represents a logical candidate for the process, as he is under contract through 2026 owing to the five-year, $98.75MM extension he signed in 2020. Even after some record-breaking deals signed this offseason, that pact still ranks among the most lucrative at the position.
The 26-year-old was limited to 12 games last season due to a torn pectoral muscle. The injury was one of many the Ravens had to deal with in the secondary, so a return to full health will be a welcomed sight in camp. He totalled 13 pass breakups and one interception last season, registering his worst performance to date in most coverage statistics. A bounceback is expected in 2022, when fellow All-Pro Marcus Peters is scheduled to return after being sidelined for all of 2021.
After the restructure, the Ravens still rank towards the bottom of the league in remaining cap space. Nevertheless, they now have the potential to make a modest addition or two in the near future.
They must have some idea of their target already to make this move. I am just wondering which player(s) they might be.
Have to figure one of them will be a disappointing veteran FA WR signing. The other glaring hole would be edge rusher, but I don’t follow the sport at all anymore so I don’t know what really is left. I thought they were already scraping the bottom of the barrel as it is.
Just seems a bit early to me to clear space now if you intend to make moves during pre season cuts. That is typically when the Ravens swoop in and manage to get some decent talent from time to time.
If you don’t follow football anymore, how do you know the Ravens situation, and why are you posting endlessly on an NFL rumors site?
I can not support the NFL and the team and still understand what’s going on. I am not stupid.
Probably either for a Lamar extension or a receiver signing… expecting the former
I don’t think they should spend the money on either option. The guy they sign isn’t going to be a difference maker, and may have health issues anyway depending on who it is.
I don’t think they should give Lamar a crazy contract either. I give him credit for what he’s been able to do in the league so far. I just don’t think it leads to post season or long term success. They built an entire offense around him and it just hasn’t worked.
Define “hasn’t worked”
How many superbowls has he won?
Is a “working” offense defined by super bowl wins?
If the offense worked and Lamar is amazing as you think he is, why does he fall apart in the playoffs every time?
I never said Lamar is amazing? Nor have I said the offense works?Friend, I’m not trying to argue with you. You claimed that the offense hasn’t worked, and if you are correct than either the OC needs to go or the organization shouldn’t tie a lot of money to Lamar for 10 years. The truth is that, when healthy, the offense has literally set records and Lamar has won an MVP. The truth is that he is also 1-3 in the playoffs with two heartbreaking losses. I want you to convince me the offense doesn’t work, but the argument of “0 zero super bowls and bad playoff performances” isn’t enough. The playoffs have too many variables.
The offense has set RUSHING records. Winning in the regular season doesn’t mater. What matters is what you do in the post season. Everyone knows that.
The playoffs don’t have any “variables.” What usually happens is that teams can focus a bit extra on their opponent, which is why Lamar struggles. Teams game plan against him and take away the things he can do.
He is also a turnover machine. The passing offense is terrible and is why no receiver worth their salt will come here or stay here.
I don’t think it is as much as an OC problem as it is a Lamar problem. He’s a limited passer. Roman has done the best he can to get a system he can work in. He should be getting tons of praise for what he’s managed to do with what he has.
lmao, this is what delusional people call “alternative facts”
Yeah, all the people that think Lamar Jackson the best QB in the world and can’t do any wrong. That’s pretty delusional. Thanks for supporting me.
What choice do they have other than to pay Lamar? Harbaugh built his offense around him and Lamar puts butts in the seats and sells a lot of jerseys. Whether they can win the whole thing with Lamar is a different issue, but sometimes it isn’t about winning it all – it is just about winning “enough” to stay employed.
That’s never been the way the Ravens do things and if that’s what they become with Lamar at the helm, that’s a pretty sad situation.
They can tag him and draft his replacement. This college style offense can be just as easily removed as it was installed. Go back to a pro style offense that is conventional.
Huh? This is the team that overpaid Joe Flacco (6 years/$120.6 million) in the hope of returning to the Super Bowl after an otherwise fluke defensive year.
Because he was a franchise QB that won the MVP of that Superbowl. Then they never got him a real WR or OL.
So your basis on something not working is 2 full years? So I guess the Colts should have just gotten rid of Manning anytime in his first 8 seasons cuz according to your logic it just wasn’t working. Or the Dolphins should have thrown Marino in the trash. I mean hell he never won a Super Bowl so why the hell did they keep paying him? No I’m not saying Jackson is the same caliber as those 2. I’m pointing out how f**king stupid your argument is. He’s 1-2 in the playoffs in 2 years as a full time starter. I mean yeah f**king choke artist! GTFO with your asinine assessment!
Miami and Indianapolis weren’t losing because of Dan Marino and Peyton Manning.
You aren’t saying Lamar is the same caliber as those two, but yet MY argument is stupid……
You proved my point. Thanks.
Seems like Marcus’s contract should also be restructured or extended to free up cap space.
I think they probably wanna see how he’s moving in camp before that.
Well, they did make a move today. They signed career back up RB Corey Clement. This is due to the fact that they believe Dobbins will not be ready week one of the season.
Still, I doubt he cost that much that the Ravens needed to move a lot of money around to make that deal happen.
