Josh Rosen is heading to Cleveland. After working out for the Browns earlier today, the quarterback will sign with the team, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter). It will be a one-year deal for Rosen. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland (on Twitter), the quarterback will sign his contract tomorrow.

With Deshaun Watson facing a potential suspension, the Browns have reportedly been on the lookout for some reinforcement at the quarterback position. Rosen auditioned for the team earlier today, with A.J. McCarron also getting a work out. Cleveland has also been lightly connected to 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo, and the Browns reportedly did some research on Garrett Gilbert, who spent time with the organization in 2019. Rosen ultimately won out, and he’ll now join a depth chart that includes Watson, presumed Week 1 starter Jacoby Brissett, and free agent signing Josh Dobbs.
It’s only been four seasons since Rosen was selected by the Cardinals with the 10th-overall pick in the 2018 draft. He only got one season in Arizona before the organization pivoted to Kyler Murray, and he didn’t show a whole lot when he was on the field. In 13 starts as a rookie, Rosen guided the Cardinals to a 3-10 record while completing 55.2 percent of his passes for 2,278 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
He was traded to the Dolphins in 2019, but he only got into six games (three starts) for his new squad, tossing one touchdown vs. five interceptions. He was waived prior to the 2020 campaign, and since that time, he’s had brief stints with the Buccaneers, 49ers, and Falcons. He ended up getting into four games for Atlanta last season, completing only two of his 11 pass attempts.
Temporarily, Rosen will mostly serve as depth at the position; Cabot writes that Rosen was signed to be a backup to Brissett (vs. competing with Brissett to serve as the temporary QB1). More significantly, it seems pretty clear that the Browns are preparing to be without Watson for at least a solid chunk of the upcoming campaign.
I’d take the vet minimum!
Is there a workout bonus for carrying a clipboard?
Stay away from the Browns. They have a warped sense of priorities.
Like winning games?
I guess you could say there were 3 qb mistakes this offseason before this.
Hahahaha
Chosen One
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Browns really looked at their QB room and said, “Josh Rosen could really elevate this group”.
I’d honestly rather have Dobbs as my #2…
lmao
Everybody laughs (even me), but this dude could actually get playing time. The question is how he red shirts against Brissett who’s been pretty serviceable.
Just another arm in camp. Probably won’t even play. All teams go into camp with at least 4 quarterbacks. Watson will get a suspension, probably 4-8 games and the Browns will need 3 quarterbacks on their roster. Don’t read too much into this
looks like he’s the backup
If he beats out Dobbs. Watson will be suspended for probably no more than 8 games, so chances are who ever is the #2-3 quarterback probably won’t see the field. This is nothing more than adding an arm in camp and getting someone familiar in case they need someone later in the season. I don’t know if Dobbs or Rosen is eligible for the developmental squad or not but I’m sure they’ll all be Browns at the beginning of the season
I forgot they have Dobbs
..either way signing Rosen is either a troll or done through ignorance
He does have some horrible stats. Honestly, I expect the Browns to grab someone that is released at the final cuts. They really need another arm in camp to throw to the receivers. Most teams have at least 4 quarterbacks at the beginning of camp
Just another great decision by Steve “I have no clue what I am doing” Keim by the Cardinals on Draft Day.
Not as good as ‘Let’s sign Kyler Murray to a HUGE contract!’.
A hot tub in his dorm room told you everything you needed to know about his commitment to football.
Watson won’t get more than 8 games. So this is a great fresh start for Rosen. He didn’t get a fair shake. Tremendous value if he knocked off the ego and became a student of the game. After 8 games he can be available for injury relief. Good luck JR this might be your last chance.
He’s signed as the backups backup. He probably won’t play unless Brissett gets hurt.
I was speaking for the amount of possible playing time. And injury relief or suck relief if briskest drops the ball. Lol 3rd string is indicative of his chances running out.
I’d say the reports of Watson only getting an 8-game suspension are not entirely accurate. They could in fact be leaked to test the PR waters of this disaster. The league can still appeal/overrule this arbiter Judge and do their preferred indefinite with option to apply for reinstatement after what would be more than 8-games.
I agree Rich.
It’s been interesting that no one in Watson’s camp or the Browns has talked about last season’s non-playing within the context of the suspension (for PR purposes).
Maybe they’re waiting for the suspension announcement to do that.
He was paid his full salary last year. The only way that would be a punishment is if Watson would have to forfeit last year’s salary and I’m not sure that’s even legal.
I meant the non playing part. Valid point though.
That has been floated around as a punishment. Donate his 10 million dollar salary to a woman’s group. Everyone wins but Watson. He loses more money than he would this year so the league looks like he got a years suspension
Except he didn’t play because he flat out refused to ever play for the franchise, and that claim was before the news of the many incidents of sexual assault. Taking any salary for last year is a crime.
That’s interesting.
It would be a smart PR move to do this. Then he could say that he was actually suspended for 12 months already.
Also, with the shenanigans that the Browns pulled on the new contract structure, it would make that look better too.
I doubt he’ll do this though.
The NFLPA and the league came to an agreement to hire an outside arbitrator/judge, how would it look for Goodell to overrule her on her very first case? Why hire her if you’re just going to give the player what you want to? Watson would sue and then be able to play until then. The NFL only used the testimony of 4 of the accusers and reports are that they never provided evidence of violence, threat, coercion or force. 8 games is the maximum he’ll get.
Are you new to how Goodell works?
I thought Blake Bortles was the guy teams signed when all they wanted was an extra arm in camp.
Josh Rosen.. the next student in the Cleveland Browns school of how to be a predator hosted by Watson. What a pos franchise someone burn it to the ground
