Bears wide receiver David Moore was arrested early Monday morning in Gainesville, Texas, according to ESPN’s David Newton. Moore was arrested on drug and weapon charges.
According to the Gainesville Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call about a “possible intoxicated person” asleep in a car that was parked in a Taco Bell drive-thru. When officers arrived, they found Moore at the wheel, with the report noting that the individual smelled of marijuana. Officers later found THC edible candies and three pistols inside the car, leading to Moore’s arrest for possession of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of weapons.
Moore had a productive stint in Seattle, collecting 1,254 yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns between the 2018 and 2020 seasons. He split the 2021 season between Denver and Green Bay, seeing time in only three games. He joined the Bears on a one-year deal this offseason, and while he could compete for a role on offense, he’s likely heading toward a special teams gig.
As Newton points out, Moore is the third Bears player to get arrested this offseason. Back in April, wideout Byron Pringle was arrested for reckless driving without a license, and two weeks ago, linebacker Matt Adams was arrested and charged with misdemeanor gun possession. Like Moore, both Pringle and Adams joined the organization this offseason.
Has to go. Bears have a new regime. Can’t have this type of crap on the roster. It’s not like he’s a huge FA guy any way
He Gone!
In fairness….we have ALL passed out in the Taco Bell drive thru line at some point in our lives.
True… but maybe not with three guns in the car.
I was with a guy and we went to Jack in the Box after a softball tournament and night of drinking and the guy who was driving shot the clown. Does that count? I mean after all he did refuse us service for some reason I can’t figure out. I mean I was passed out( Basically) But the gunshot woke me up.
Shot the clown? Care to elaborate
In the old days it used to be a clownish dude that was supposed to be jumping out of the box. In the 70’s. I’m pretty sure the statute of limitations ran out. Over the speaker in the drive thru.
I read somewhere today, that this is 3rd arrest for the new GM’s signings. Not a good look with 3-4 months on the job.
It’s not a GMs fault if a player can’t behave like a responsible adult. He has more important duties to attend to than babysitting. Even if GMs signed only altar boys incidents like these would occur.
True, but they also need to have someone doing background checks on these guys. They do it when they’re drafting but I guess it stops once they’ve gone pro?
Thanks! Well said. When 3 of your FA’s will be suspended, that has to be on the GM.
@ arty / Are all those suspensions of Josh Gordon on GMs too?
Yes! When a guy clearly has a drug problem, why would you sign him? Not only a drug problem, but had been suspended multiple times previously. But those GM’s are excused for not paying attention to his history?
Wasn’t Josh drafted in the supplemental draft because of issues while college?
I mean how many red flags does a guy need to show?
All of us have laughed or mocked in the comment sections about Josh being signed, including yourself.
It’s the NFL’s fault. Any other employer would fire you. It’s glorified by the NFL
So, the cop smelled weed…from edible candies? Or he invented some probably cause? Dubious.
Also, how do you illegally carry in Texas? They wander around with AR-15’s on the street. What is left that is illegal?
He smelled of marijuana. Meaning that he very well could have smoked prior to driving. Or was smoking while driving. The THC gummies were also found. As for the gun issue, due to the fact that he committed another crime and had weapons present, he’s changed with UWC.
You really had to look hard to make this someone else’s fault here, my man.
There is no way to prove or disprove what someone smells. This is often abused.
A good lawyer can beat this charge.
Yes, cops were called about an intoxicated person who conked out in the Taco Bell drive thru (totally normal) and they had to invent that he smelled of weed. The regular people who called and could tell he was intoxicated just made it up too. Good call there joshy boy. You make a sound argument.
Never said he wasn’t guilty.
Said a good lawyer could beat the charge*.
*Depending on where he was. I originally read it to mean he was at a Taco Bell that had a drive thru parked at a parking space.
But seeing how you read it, if he did indeed pass out in the actual drive thru lane…obviously different story.
Sleeping in your car in a parking spot is not illegal (in most places).
It is if the business or property doesn’t want you there. Most places also have ordinances regarding loitering or urban camping or what not, but that for public places. In private places, you will be trespassed and, if you refuse to leave (being too intoxicated to leave counts), you will be arrested. In any case, that’s not why Moore was arrested. He was arrested for what was in his car and on his person.
If you are drunk/high and impaired and operating a vehicle, that is illegal.
If you are carrying a weapon improperly, that is illegal.
In many places, having marijuana is illegal.
If someone is passed out in a parking lot, yes, the police will check to see what is going on, and if any of the above are discovered to be true, then yes, it is very likely that he/she will be arrested. No lawyer will “beat” those charges as a guarantee. Any question of illegal search/seizure would very likely be defeated by the suspicion of the intoxication of the driver, which seems reasonable given that Moore was passed out in a Taco Bell drive-through and the odor of marijuana (which, yes, is an impairing substance that affects one’s ability to drive and therefore is considered cause for DUI). There’s not any real question here from what it sounds like. Parking lot, roadway, drive-through, wherever-it sounds pretty clear that Moore has some violations.
Technically, sleeping in your car isn’t illegal. However, this situation is different. He could still get a DUI while not driving your car.
sleeping in your car isn’t illegal.
============================
This might vary from state to state, but I believe you can be asleep behind the wheel, while under the influence, but only if you don’t have the keys in the ignition. At that point, it is assumed that you are in the process of driving.
He was sleeping in the drive through like Jacob Blake w three guns in his car he’s lucky he’s not Swiss cheese
Literally no one could beat this charge.
Better call Saul!
First of all, him being passed out in his vehicle in a drive thru is enough to justify probable cause to search. With or without the smell of weed.
OK, was he in the actual drive thru lane or not…anyone know?
Now I’m just curious, you can put every Chicago Bear in jail for all I care…
Article says he was asleep in the drive thru
These guys are doing this stuff so they won’t have to play for the Bears.
I guess it never occurred to them that they could just refuse to sign a contract.
Yikes at least he didn’t get shot
Ignorant comment.
How’s that ignorant Jacob Blake fell asleep in a wendys drive through fought the cops and got shot this guy had three guns in the car we are all lucky nobody got killed
Moore didn’t fight the cops and steal a cops taser, which could have been used against the cop. But hey, apples and oranges, right?
Blake didn’t have three handguns in his car ready to go but he scuffled w the cops and got shot. This guy coulda easily been startled when they pulled up reached for a gun and made Swiss cheese
Scuffled LOL! Good try
The Bears knew what they were getting.
They could re-sign Sam Hurd to replace him, he should be getting out soon and has been staying in shape.
Edibles are so damn strong. Be careful when using them.
Hahaha fell asleep in a taco bell drive thru ?
We were driving from my parents farm in Gainesville (well calisburg to be exact) and saw this. We didn’t know what was going on. Many cops.
They should run a series “Thuglife in the NFL” plenty of stories to cover year in and year out
Dude couldn’t handle the edibles so he parked. Them guns don’t make it any better but as long as they clean he should be good. My cousin was in the league. 90% has 2 or 3 in the car. I’d be like that if the public knew my net worth. Considering everything else this off-season that happened this is nothing. At least he parked so he has some sense. Idk maybe I’m more forgiving than yall.
Don’t think parking in the drive through was best choice.
Better choice than Haskins or gladney.
I have no problem with carrying a gun for protection. But how hard is it to get a permit in Texas? I thought they handed out concealed permits every time you voted.
And I have no problem with pot, but you have to know the laws, and you can’t be driving while high.
