Maurice Hurst‘s bad luck with the 49ers continues. The defensive tackle tore his biceps during practice on Friday and will have to undergo surgery, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area (on Twitter). The injury will likely sideline Hurst for the entire 2022 season, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Hurst was a fifth-round pick by the Raiders in 2018, and he ended up spending three seasons with the organization. After collecting 31 tackles and four sacks in 13 games (10 starts) as a rookie, Hurst only started seven games and compiled four more sacks in his final two seasons with the Raiders.
The 27-year-old caught on with San Francisco last offseason. Hurst started the season on injured reserve after suffering a high ankle sprain during the preseason. He returned for a pair of games before nursing a calf injury the rest of the way. Hurst re-signed with the 49ers in March, inking a veteran salary exception worth a bit more than $1MM. The team later released and re-signed the defensive tackle to save a chunk of cash.
Heading into training camp, defensive tackle looked like an area of strength for the 49ers. Now, the team is down three players at the position. Besides Hurst, Hassan Ridgeway is dealing with a quad injury and is out of practice, while Arik Armstead‘s sprained knee will sideline him for a few weeks. Fortunately, Javon Kinlaw will return to practice after recovering from a knee sprain, but as Matt Barrows of The Athletic tweets, the former first-round pick will be on a “pitch count” for at least the next few practices.
Gonna be a run first offence scheme that coordinators plan against these guys!
Please explain why.
they legitimately have arguably the best front 7 in football… they’ll be alright
Matt, that’s why I asked Pawtucket to explain. I agreewithyou.
The 49ers do have an elite D-line, but that is mainly due to the deep depth and talent at edge rush. The weakness is the D-Line interior as explained by Ben Levine. I believe Pawtucket was trying to explain that the best attack is a solid run game only without a 900-word essay on why.
The bigger elephant in the room is 2 games in 2 years with 2 contract re-works for Mr. Hurst. Looks like all of the pundits that ran Gruden/Maylock through the ringer for releasing him were wrong once again.
Rosebud, $1 mill/yr? He probably wouldn’t make the team. The dline, end to end is loaded. Better than Buckners last year. Btw, they’ve developed d tackles that are now gone because other teams paid big for them. Running would be a bad game plan. Under 900 words and explained.
Claude — stay on point.
The D-Line interior is the weakest spot. The best way to attack it is to run heavy. I do believe that is what Pawtucket was saying.
How about this: Please explain why an offensive cord should attack the 49ers D-Line with a short, intermediate, or long passing game. Or is it a 1st and 10 punt situation?
On point was me saying the interior is NOT a weakness. On point was responding to your criticizing of “reworking” hursts contract. His contract is for only $1 mill and on point was my comment that he wasn’t likely to make the team. Before you wax wise acondescend, try reading better. Btw, your OC planning was off point.
On Point Raymond
So the interior is the strength of the SF D-line. Got it, no O-cord should look to attack it. Don’t even bother trying to run it up the gut. Instead, a passing game plan would best serve to move the chains. Please, as asked, explain how this is the way.
YOU asked Pawtucket to explain himself. Please explain why Pawtucket is wrong in his assessment.

Matt, that’s why I asked Pawtucket to explain.
Don’t discount Kevin Givens and Javon Kinlaw, nor Ridgeway as he’s in the mix as well. Plus, they have Armstead who was a beast at DT last season, and Nkemdiche who they just signed has been pretty explosive thus far in camp from the DT position…
With Bosa, Armstead, J.Kinlaw, Drake Jackson, Ebukam, Givens, H.Ridgeway, K.Hyder Jr., Nkemdiche, C.Omenihu, Turay, and J.Willis, and with Ryans scheming them up, they’ll have plenty of DL and DT to throw around and rotate against their opponents…
Not to mention, their secondary is SIGNIFICANTLY improved over last seasons, and with their 3 stud LBs, they’ll get plenty of coverage sacks as well…
Heck, give Bosa more than 3-4 seconds, and you can just about chalk it up as a sack..lol
This does blow though, because Hurst was playing like a man on a mission providing a solid interior pass rush from all the camp reports thus far. Even negative Cohn couldn’t ignore Hurst’s excellent start..lol
It’s ok we got javon kinlaw remember guys kinlaw cold
Dude should change his name to Maurice Hurts
