The identities of the head coaches who will be on the sidelines when the XFL begins its third iteration were already known. Today, though, it has been revealed which franchise each coach will be working with when the league re-starts in 2023.

As detailed by Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson (on Twitter), Wade Phillips has been assigned to the Houston franchise. That will mark the second stint coaching a professional team in that city for the soon-to-be 75-year-old, as he took over interim HC duties for the Texans during his time there in 2013. This will mark his first time on the sidelines since 2019, when he served as defensive coordinator of the Rams.
The list of XFL coaches also includes decorated former players. One of them is Hines Ward, who will be joining Phillips and Bob Stoops in the state of Texas by coaching the San Antonio franchise. The former Super Bowl MVP worked as an offensive assistant with the Jets in 2020 and 2021; he spent the past campaign as the WRs coach at Florida Atlantic. The XFL post will mark his first time as a head coach at any level.
Another brand-name player the XFL will be featuring on the sidelines is Rod Woodson. The Hall of Fame corner has more experience than Ward with respect to time spent as a positional coach at the NFL level, including two separate stints as the CBs coach of the Raiders. In his case as well, though, the XFL will provide a first-time HC opportunity. He will take the reins of the Las Vegas team.
Long before the league unveiled its batch of HCs for the upcoming season, the XFL announced a formal partnership with the NFL. While the former will not organize itself as a strictly developmental league for the latter, there will be notable collaboration between the two on a number of matters, including the NFL’s Alumni Academy. While it remains to be seen if the third time proves to be the charm for the enterprise now co-owned by Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia, these agreements, along with the interest generated by these coaches, should give the league a chance at long-term success.
Here is the full breakdown of the franchise-coach pairings, per Wilson:
- Houston: Wade Phillips
- Dallas: Bob Stoops
- San Antonio: Hines Ward
- Washington, D.C.: Reggie Barlow
- Seattle: Jim Haslett
- Las Vegas: Rod Woodson
- Orlando: Terrell Buckley
- St. Louis: Anthony Becht
Wade Phillips out here coaching and CK7 still doesn’t have a job smh
He’d be a hot commodity if he was willing to play in the XFL.
Phillips can actually coach at a pro level, where as Kaperdick is not a pro caliber QB. If Kaperdick was a decent pro QB he would have easily beat out Stidham, Mullins or Garbers for a backup spot with the Raiders. The fact that he could beat out that collection of stiffs should tell you all you need to know about Kaperdick’s ability to play QB on a pro football team.
I don’t think CK7 is interested in coaching.
T-Buck as a head coach? That should be fun.
As I recall, once declared himself to be the greatest CB of all time!
Always referred to him as Terrell Suckley!

Interesting spread of teams with nothing north of the capital in the northeast and nothing in California. I’m guessing the East would have DC, Orlando, St. Louis and Houston and the West would have Seattle, Vegas, San Antonio, and Dallas.
Both NY and LA had teams in the last league. Both had poor attendance. Replacing them with 2 new teams.
also very expensive to rent and hotel in NY and LA
this league doesn’t need them , and can launch expansion in the future.
if this league just makes smart financial decisions it can be like MLS where it needs a 50 year plan but can be stable presence
I would have liked to have seen all the teams in this league be in cities without an NFL team honestly, I understand that some markets can handle both but say a team in San Diego, Portland, Oakland, OKC, instead of Houston, Dallas, Vegas and DC.
I’d say scratch Oakland and add St. Louis
St. Louis is already in the new XFL. Twinsuns was replacing NFL cities in the league with ones that don’t currently have an NFL team.
This iteration of the XFL will fold just as quickly as the prior ones, so the games could be played in the middle of a corn field (the concept is better suited for baseball) and it wouldn’t matter.
Would you replace Seattle with another non-NFL city? The East would need another team under your configuration. Since Orlando would be the only team left on the East Coast and is down south, I would think it would need to be in the north in a state that doesn’t currently have an NFL team. The first moderate-sized city that comes to mind is Hartford, CT. If Native American tribes are interested in having one on their land, they could put one on either the grounds of Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods.
Why isn’t there a Ny franchise?
No the Dragons stay put.
As much as I love Jim Zorn went to a FB camp and got to snap a few balls to him hung out and had fun. I am glad he is not the Dragons coach anymore. Listening to him call plays was brutal. Couldn’t make up his mind took over half the play clock to make a call.
The Giants and Jets already qualify as XFL quality teams so no need to add another.
LA moved to Vegas
Tampa to Orlando
New York moved to San Antonio
rest of the teams are same as 2020
Let’s hear about how unfair it is that Kaepernick hasn’t been given a chance to coach in the XFL.
some QBs to keep an eye on:
Jordan Ta’amu : who started for St. Louis in 2020 is currently available after securing an NFL contract in ’21
Cam Newton : can you think of a bigger draw for a Sunday in late February? the doors not closed on this one.
PJ Walker : the best QB from XFL 2020 could be a cap casualty of the Panthers as early as this fall.
Josh Rosen : has failed to catch on since leaving Miami.. XFL pays better than practice squads
Garret Gilbert : this guy is always down for spring football leagues
JT Barrett : another practice squad guy, can follow fellow OSU QB Cardelle Jones footsteps in taking reigns of an XFL offense
expired names we won’t be seeing despite public interest: Johnny Manziel, Tim Tebow, RG3, Colin Krapernick
It would require a ton of humility for Newton to accept an offer from the XFL and that certainly isn’t his strong suit.
idk could be looked at as be the center of attention of a league that has a tv deal with ESPN
.. the guys sitting on his couch
I’d think putting a franchise in Salt Lake City and Oklahoma City would be successful. Put a team in Portland and you will have a rivalry with Seattle.
