The Seahawks have seen multiple franchise pillars depart this offseason, but they have maintained an optimistic tone with respect to keeping one of their young stars. Still, the recent actions of D.K. Metcalf have caused a stir in the organization.
The 24-year-old made headlines with his unexcused absence from Seattle’s minicamp. That decision “surprised the team some,” according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. Metcalf had been present for a portion of the voluntary offseason program, which could explain why members of the team were caught off guard by the move to skip mandatory practice last week.
Metcalf is among the numerous wideouts from the 2019 draft class who are in line for second contracts, something which is taking place within the context of a skyrocketing WR market. Head coach Pete Carroll provided an update on contract talks, saying that things are still “semi-quiet” right now, but that negotiations could intensify in the coming weeks. Condotta, likewise, states that “the drama [surrounding Metcalf] may linger all summer but it should end by fall.”
While the Metcalf situation is front and center right now in Seattle, the offseason has also led to speculation about the team’s cornerback situation. As Condotta’s colleague Adam Jude writes, there appears to be a competition along the outside which is “wide open.” He notes that Sidney Jones has been practicing with the starters, which should come as little surprise given that he started 11 of 16 contests last year. However, Jude adds that one, if not both of rookies Coby Bryant and Tariq Woolen could take on starting roles this season, given their performances in practice, as the team looks for a D.J. Reed replacement.
Bryant and Woolen won’t have the chance to push for a starting spot until training camp in July. By that time, the Seahawks may have already taken care of their most pressing financial issue.
The Seahawks are fooling themselves if they think they are re-tooling versus re-building. They need to tank this year in order to maximize their post-Wilson era – otherwise they are going to stink for 5 years instead of just 2. Thus Metcalf needs to be traded, not re-signed.
Bruh why trade a 24 year old superstar who can be the teams next team captain/mainstays for the next generation of Seahawks, so trading him would be stupid imo especially since u got the money now so why not!?
Metcalfe won’t look like a superstar if he has Drew Lock or Geno Smith throwing the ball to him. Thus you are wasting cap space on him while you go 6-11 and pick 5th overall. His greatest asset to Seattle is the first round pick that they’ll be able to use as leverage to make sure they get their next franchise QB (either in 2023 or 2024). Star receivers are the easiest player on the team to replace – just ask Pittsburgh.
Seattle has a first to use as leverage to move up. I think you’re delusional if you think Seattle can win 6 games with Lock or Smith. They have a bad defense and they don’t run it particularly well either. They may be the worst team in the league. Jacksonville and the Jets have made upgrades and you expect their rookie quarterbacks to be better in the 2nd year.
Hawks will have 4 picks in the top 50 next year, including (2) likely in the top 15. I don’t see Denver winning more that 9 games next year and Hawks will likely win 5 – 6 games.
Quarterbacks are coming into the league and becoming stars faster than before. Burrow and Herbert are top 10 Quarterbacks in their 2nd year. Seattle, with the right draft can compete very soon
Yes let’s trade metcalf for draft picks that will amount to nothing! Great idea!
What was DK back in 2019? A draft pick weird I know.
Don’t forget about the CB Tre Brown to, showed promise before getting hurt
While I agree trading Russ was a step backwards, maybe three steps, trading a young talented WR is foolish.
The economics of the position is inflated, but management has already paid its safety’s above market prices. The money they save on QB will be spent elsewhere, so it’s time to pay Metcalf
One could argue either way. His drops aside, he can be our biggest weapon. Calvin Johnson was a game breaker without a great QB until Stafford was drafted
Metcalf can improve and be effective with whomever. Current QB room does look like this team will have trouble competing in close games
I still see Jimmy G or Mayfield as candidates to be acquired, depending on defensive improvement, they can compete for #7 wild card with a better QB
I’m not a fan of losing intentionally, it’s no guarantee for any specific player. Tanking is for losers.
Pete’s to old to tank.
If it was Russ or Pete, I fear we made the wrong choice
Metcalf / Seattle no news, no progress so let’s throw out 50 words on a non-story. Stop this crap, when there’s news then post something.
Jeez people it just like “Dan Marino is still retired”.
Did you ever think that someone reading this article is just now hearing about Metcalf not attending? If you’re not a Seattle fan and don’t really watch TV, you may not know this. Practically every article that I read here about the Browns has been written by a Cleveland writer earlier. Here’s a piece of advice….if you already know what the article says, skip it and go directly to the comments
I never watch tv or ‘regular’ news or visit the nfl website. I read ‘rumors’, seldom check comments, then view the weather forecast before headin out to work my 80 acres.
I’m happy for you
