The NFL’s Rooney Rule will is expanding to the position coach ranks. The league passed a resolution Tuesday to incorporate the quarterbacks coach position into the Rooney Rule requirements, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.
Teams with vacancies at this position will now be required to interview a minority candidate. This continues a stream of enhancements to the Rooney Rule, which now mandates at least two minority or female candidates be interviewed for general manager and coordinator positions.
The quarterback coach role represents the top feeder spot to offensive coordinator gigs, and a notable disparity between white and minority coaches persists at that position. Only three teams — the Falcons (Charles London), Eagles (Brian Johnson) and Saints (Ronald Curry) — employ a minority quarterbacks coach.
Not every team has a staffer in this role, but most do. The Colts and Texans had minority coaches in these roles recently and promoted both (Marcus Brady and Pep Hamilton, respectively) to offensive coordinator over the past year and change. Brady and Hamilton are two of the league’s four minority OCs entering the ’22 season.
Most of the current head coaches with offensive backgrounds became coordinators after stays as QBs coaches — from Andy Reid to Kyle Shanahan to Matt LaFleur to Zac Taylor. This specific Rooney Rule expansion stands to grant more minority assistants audiences with teams during the annual winter hiring periods.
Racism, it’s everywhere you want it to be
Let the same arguments begin from all sides.
I really don’t understand why these rules are around. If Sean Payton or Bill Belichick were free agents for whatever reason they’d just be wasting peoples time. If a coach like Mike Tomlin was a Free agent then the team that lands him benefits on top of scoring a great coach.
Duping the world into believing it’s making progress on combating racism is more harmful to eradicating it than doing nothing about it, in my opinion.
Next thing you know it’s going to be the Rooney Rule for owners to own a team in the NFL…
This Rule Sucks!!!!
I still remember when Gruden was hired for the Raiders coach job, i believe they brought in their TE coach for an “interview” to satisfy the Rooney rule even though everyone and their mother already knew Gruden was the next head coach and just needed to put the pen to paper to make it official.
I do find it funny we didnt hear about any interviews when Bowles became coach of the Bucs. Reid basically just handed the keys over and not a single interview.
This Rooney rule is stupid if anything, it only helps tanking teams as they will hire some random minority for the extra picks and then have the excuse the coach didnt do anything for the team. Owners are just skating around this rule constantly.
I understand the intent of the rule but no one follows it and in the end it wastes time and money for both the interviewer and interviewee. Even at my job we have succession plans or if not 9/10 the manager already has a candidate in mind to either promote or someone they will hire. I went on half a dozen interviews where they pretty much knew who they were hiring but due to EO they had to open up the interview to others just in case. Wasted vacation day and personal expense to drive out for something i really had no chance i found out later.
This is hilarious to me personally. White elites in power creating rules for lowly minorities that can’t fend for themselves to level the field? I could be insane but the prospect of this entire philosophy is what minorities seem to have a problem with in the first place?
I really hate this rule. I myself am not black, but I know if I was a black football coach interviewing for a position, I’d hate having that feeling of knowing that they’re probably interviewing me because they have to and not because they are impressed with my abilities as a coach.
I think anytime you get a chance to impress an owner or GM is a good thing. Maybe they have a lukewarm attitude of you coming in but you wow them in the interview. Many guys both black and white have probably been hired off of a previous interview
I like the spirit of the rule but I’m not sure anybody agrees with its implementation. Token interviews to me are counterproductive.
Will this expansion include the pick compensation for hiring a minority?
Don’t use the word minority – as it really doesn’t mean that.
I’ve lost all respect for the. NFL .this is nothing but a form of racism when u force one race to look at one specific race first . they are not fixing anything .
Racist NFL
The rule will just lead to more bloated coaching staffs. Eventually the league will have more coaches than players. It’s absurd.
