49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel helped push the narrative that his relationship with San Francisco was deteriorating in early April when he unfollowed the 49ers and removed all references to the team from his social media. Well, according to Michael David Smith of NBC Sports, Samuel has signaled that things may be trending in a better direction lately.
Smith points out that Samuel refollowed the 49ers on Instagram and liked a post that showed general manager John Lynch saying that the issues between the two parties can be worked out.
Samuel is headed into the final year of his rookie contract and is looking for a nice, new payday. Smith makes a good point that new deals to Davante Adams, Tyreek Hill, and Stefon Diggs are going to make a new deal for Samuel fairly costly for the 49ers.
Here are a few other rumors from around the NFC West, starting with another note from the Bay Area:
- Jake Hutchinson, the 49ers beat writer for KNBR, released some quotes from an interview with Lynch. Lynch commented on the progress of the team’s efforts to trade quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, saying, “I felt we were close in some discussions, and then the decision was made to have surgery and it brought things to a screeching halt.” Lynch continued, “We either want to have Jimmy playing for us, which we’re alright with, or we want him to get the value.”
- During a press conference with Seahawks general manager and executive vice president John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll after the Draft, ESPN’s Brady Henderson released a video containing some of their thoughts on the No. 9 overall pick, Mississippi State tackle Charles Cross. In it, the two specify that they see Cross on the blindside, playing left tackle. They don’t have concerns about him transitioning from Mike Leach‘s spread offense at Mississippi State due to Cross’s athleticism. They also felt very fortunate to have had Cross fall to them at 9, noting that there were opportunities to move up or down.
- Matt Barrows of The Athletic wrote an article going over the results of the 49ers’ 2022 Draft. He notes that the two Day 3-additions of UTSA tackle Spencer Burford and Fordham tackle Nick Zakelj both played tackle in college, but project as NFL guards, similar to past draft picks Colton McKivitz and Jaylon Moore. While slightly problematic that none of these linemen specialize at guard or tackle, it’s extremely problematic that none of them have experience at center. With current center Alex Mack sitting at 36 and contemplating retirement, it’s important that San Francisco begins to look at options beyond Mack to play center.
- In a rundown of the Rams’ 2022 Draft, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic unveiled an interesting rumor about how highly Los Angeles valued their third-round draft pick, Wisconsin guard Logan Bruss. With plenty of time before their selection arrived, the Rams knew Bruss was the player they wanted to target at No. 104 overall. Upon the suggestion of now-retired left tackle Andrew Whitworth, who was in the Rams’ draft room, Los Angeles made a few efforts to move up to select Bruss earlier. Unfortunately for them, the teams they called declined. Fortunately for them, though, Bruss found his way to Southern California despite their inability to move up.
The Seahawks are clearly cheating
New idea:
Deebo Samuel for James Bradberry and Kadarius Toney.
Niners replace Samuel with Toney, another good young WR. They also get themselves James Bradberry at CB who fills a need for them. Overall team takes a hit but WR remains cheap and the defence improves.
If you want to take it a step further release/trade Jimmy G and use the cap space to bring back Tartt for cheap and get some help for the o line.
Giants get Samuel and need to give him a big extension but he’s great as receiver and ball carrier, which takes pressure off Barkley and together they could be trouble for other teams. Not to mention you also have Galloday, Shepard, Slayton and Robinson at WR aswell.
That’s were if your serious about trying to win you’d flip Galloday for Baker.
Baker Barkley Samuel Shepard Slayton Robinson plus two strong tackles. That’s a nice offence.
A for effort on this new idea Simmons!
I don’t think that it’s bad conceptually, but my concern for Bradberry is his contract. Can the 9ers handle that? And, just signed Jason Verrett, would they want another corner? San Fran also wants to keep Deebo. I will say that the Giants would love this trade, both in acquiring Samuel and in moving two pieces. I know that they claim to not be interested in moving Toney now, but I don’t think that Schoen would say no to any offer that he thought was good.
Yeah, Deebo isn’t a problem for the 49ers yet, and even so they don’t want the Giants malcontents…
Of course the Guants would LOVE this trade, but but 49ers are not accepting guys with little to no value for one of the top 5-10 offensive weapons in the league…
Any team that wants Deebo, if the 49ers trade him, would have to at least start with a top 10 1st Round Draft Pick…Heck, they even declined that from the Jets…
That’s mainly because the Jets wanted the 49ers second round pick which would have decreased the value of the trade for the 49ers. I’m glad Lynch has a backbone and I think the situation has been handled as well as it can be.
This isn’t remotely close to something the Niners would consider. We don’t need Bradberry.
That trade might as well have a unicorn in it.
Why trade for an expensive CB when he’s gonna get released and be on the open market. And why trade for a headache like Toney? Yeah he’s cheap and talented but the kids a freaking idiot. And it would be stupid for the Giants….or anyone to move assets for Mayfield. Again, he’s gonna be on the open market at some point via release. NYG needs to sit back and see how this season goes and wait til next off season to address their QB situation. For the past several years there has been a large turnover of QBs and with a strong rookie QB crop coming next year why would you get desperate and settle for the crumbs of this off seasons dumped QBs when you’ll have way more and better talented options next spring?
The 49ers got two excellent UDFAs that they’re likely targeting to eventually replace Alex Mack..
Jason Poe is a freak athlete from Mercer that’s 6’1″ 300 pounds, and he describes himself as an IOL/FB. He ran a 4.8 40, and released a video of him running routes, catching passes, AND THEN doing OL drills..lol If he even only turns out as a backup, he could still be a goal line package weapon and an extra blocker, big TE, FB, etc..Kyle could make things interesting with his athleticism..lol
Dohnovan West from Arizona State was the real steal from the 49ers. Draft analysts had him going as high as the 3rd and 4th Round, but the 49ers snatched the 6’4″ Center prospect up real quick after the draft. He’s a perfect fit for Kyle’s system, and after a year learning under Mack, and getting his body more well prepared for the NFL, he very well could be their Center for the next 6-7 years..
I really hope Barrows at least also mentioned these guys as part of their rookie haul coming in..If not, that’s just lazy and making assumptions without even doing his research…Then again, I cannot say.Id be all that surprised, but I’d definitely expect alot more from him being a 49ers writer….
Also, if you guys love seeing big men punishing smaller guys, you should watch Jason Poe’s film. When he is asked to pull out and hit the second level, guys go flying backwards!! lol Plus, the speed this big man has is very impressive!! I wouldn’t mind him versus Jordan Davis in the ultimate 300 pound big man race!!
Poe’s film, the bit that I saw, actually sort of reminds me a bit of Alex Cappa’s coming out of college. Both guys were athletically on a different level sometimes when it comes to playing. It’s fun to watch.
I think that athleticism is perfect for the zone blocking scheme that Shanahan likes, but I would worry a bit about breaking in a center that has no anchor experience with a new QB who also is not experienced in calling protections at the pro level. Long term, that athleticism (at both positions-QB and C) seems like it could be fun to watch, but I would try to get a center option with experience just in case while the new guys get some experience themselves. I know West had some starts there at Arizona State, but there could be a few growing pains asking him to take over immediately full time in the pros. Probably not prohibitive, but if Mack retires, the 9ers will probably pick up a vet to be a safeguard for the new guys.
