Despite adding a pass rusher and wideout in the draft, the Browns could still re-sign defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and wide receiver Jarvis Landry. Speaking to reporters, Browns GM Andrew Berry said the team’s draft decisions wouldn’t preclude them from re-upping the two veterans, per Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. Veteran Browns reporter Tony Grossi echoed that sentiment (on Twitter), saying the Browns continue to target Clowney and a receiver.
We heard last month that a Cleveland return was still in play for both Clowney and Landry. However, the organization obviously couldn’t rely on either player returning, so they selected UAB defensive end Alex Wright with the No. 78 pick and Purdue wide receiver David Bell with the No. 99 pick.
Clowney, 29, has famously never landed a long-term contract as a veteran, going from a 2018 fifth-year option to a 2019 franchise tag to one-year deals with the Titans and Browns in the following years. Playing opposite Myles Garrett, Clowney registered nine sacks last season. He played with Watson for two seasons in Houston.
The Browns still have interest in bringing back Landry despite releasing him earlier this offseason in a cost-cutting move. Landry’s five-year Pro Bowl streak stopped after the 2019 season, and he finished with a career-low 570 receiving yards last year. When Watson is available in 2022, the Browns should feature superior aerial capabilities.
Makes sense, and they have the cap space. I’d lean towards giving Clowney 2 years, he was solid opposite Garrett.
As for Landry he can come back on a 1 year deal. But I’d be trying to flip Bakers deal for an expensive WR that someone doesn’t want.
Maybe you can get Galloday or Cooks for Baker and a pick or something like that. Giants and Texans might want Baker and picks….
Amari Cooper and Galloday or Cooks would be a solid duo
Neither of those teams are making those trades. Zero chance.
Giants would get rid of Golladay. He will be released the end of this year anyways.
They’re not taking the cap hit of trading him to then take on Baker’s salary.
There is literally 0 chance Golladay goes anywhere this season. -9M on the cap with a 31M dead cap for being released before June. 20M dead cap this season with a 10M dead cap next season for post June 1 release. 18M dead cap for pre June 1 trade saving only 3M on the cap, 7.9 dead cap this year with a 10M+ dead cap in 23 for a post June 1 trade. Then to add 23M from baker? Yeah, not even the worst GM is doing that.
Giants signing Golladay gave Detroit a 3rd round compensatory pick. That signing allowed Detroit to move up and get Jameson Williams. Thanks Giants!!
Cooks would be next to no chance considering they probably don’t want to upgrade to Baker they are happy to develop Mills. But it’s worth asking about.
But the giants they look they are finally trying to win now and Baker would be a sizeable upgrade from Jones. They have plenty of WRers in Shepard, Galloday, Slayton, Toney and Robinson. Think I seen somewhere that it’s the most expensive WR group in the league. They might actually want to shed Gallodays big contract for Baker and then invest in him long term if he does well.
Right idea. Wrong teams.
Saints should trade Michael Thomas in a deal for Baker and picks.
Thomas has 3 years left. He’s going to be making 15 and 16 mill in 2023 and 2024.
Saints should rid themselves of the head ache, recoup some draft capital, and improve their QB position.
I did think that for a second but Thomas is more valuable than Baker. On his day he’s a top 5 WR whereas Baker is on an expiring contract and at his best still isn’t a top 10 QB.
It won’t happen but I think Micheal Thomas for DHop would be better. Thomas inside of Brown, Moore and Aj Green on the outsides. DHop and AK just seem like such a good duo hahaha for either Dalton or Jameis
I’m not sure that Thomas has near the career longevity that Baker has in terms of potential. QBs are playing into their 40s at best, and a solid QB like Mayfield (who is suited to running a run first, defensive focused team) could last a team ten years if everything goes smoothly. Thomas has also not posted noteworthy numbers since wearing out his goodwill in New Orleans, so I doubt that his value is as high above Mayfield’s as would otherwise be evident.
That said, the Saints are pretty set at QB for the near future. Sean Payton I think would be much more intrigued by developing a former first round pick than would Dennis Allen, despite Mayfield’s aforementioned suitability for running a run based, play action offense. I don’t see the Saints making that trade after signing Dalton and Winston to be potential starters.
The Giants I don’t think would add Mayfield right now, because it seems that they’re more focused on resetting with Schoen’s guys and clearing a fresh slate entirely. That said, unloading Golladay and Bradberry (the latter of whom is much more valuable) could convince them otherwise. If this hypothetical scenario were to unfold, it would likely be with New York essentially treating Mayfirld like Detroit did Goff-start him for a few years while the rest of the team builds, then cut him when the contract runs out. I think that any team dealing with NYG should offer to take on Bradberry’s contract if they want to get a deal done. I think the Giants would listen, but I’m not exactly sure that they’d say yes-at least, not without Cleveland taking on Bradberry’s salary as well.
The Saints aren’t going to add Baker to Jameis and Dalton.
ya it’s really hard to find a fit for baker
maybe he should start looking into XFL
People need to stop trying to find a Baker Mayfield trade.
It does not exist. You’re not taking him on for his cap hit plus whatever asset they’re trying to acquire. Cooks or Golladay being traded creates massive dead cap hits this season and next.
The Browns do not have a trade for him otherwise it would have been accomplished already as they have other backup options currently in house.
Oh Baker will be traded. There’s really no hurry. He’s not attending voluntary workouts and there’s talk that the Browns probably won’t fine him for missing mandatory workouts. A trade will happen.
No one is paying 23M for him. They have absolutely no leverage to offload him and as of today said they’d cover none of the money if he was traded.
But yeah, keep believing the delusion that there is a trade for him out there when they missed their best chance over the draft period.
23 million? You blew any credibility with that. Not owed 23 million. Did I say that the Browns wouldn’t pay some of his salary? I did not. The draft pick they get back will be dependent on how much salary the Browns are willing to pay. Did you really expect the Browns to advertise that they’re willing to pay some salary? You may be delusional. Mayfield will not just be released. He will be traded. There are teams that want him
Oh right, 18M. That’s so much better for a guy currently slated 2 or 3 on a depth chart who only starts if their starter is suspended or injured.
They literally have no leverage. Being a Browns fan living in your own world doesn’t make it any less true.
As a Browns fan, you should know the reason they didn’t get a trade done during the draft was a refusal to take on any money.
There would be teams that want him, not on his current salary. Again, no one is taking him on that deal.
Let’s face it, it’s a lot of fun proposing crazy trades when you ignore salary cap implications. There are jokers everywhere proposing Mayfield trades like they get a commission or maybe 2 or 3 more clicks if one of their 31 scenarios actually plays out.
Nothing is going to happen with these guys in Cleveland unless they agree to low ball contracts.
Clowney will get at least 10 million per year and Landry will get at least 8 million per year. I don’t know if you consider that low ball or not
Maybe Baker to the Guardians for one of Jim Thome’s old bats??
They could develop him into a closer…..
