6:20pm: Jeudy did not commit domestic violence, Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown said, calling the charge a “very low misdemeanor.” The incident involved only property, via CBS4’s Michael Spencer (Twitter links).
The domestic violence-related charge was issued because the woman involved is the mother of Jeudy’s one-month-old child, via Mike Klis of 9News (Twitter link). The woman involved accused Jeudy of withholding medical records, her wallet and the baby’s car seat, Klis tweets. Jeudy accused the woman of taking one of his three phones, Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post adds (on Twitter). Jeudy went into police custody without incident and will meet with a judge Friday morning, Spencer tweets.
3:44pm: Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy was arrested and booked into the Arapahoe County (Colo.) Detention Center this afternoon, authorities announced. The third-year wideout is being held on a no-bond hold, according to the Arapahoe Sheriff (Twitter link).
Authorities have charged Jeudy with second-degree criminal tampering with a domestic violence enhancer. In Colorado, that means tampering with another’s property with the intent to cause “injury, inconvenience, or annoyance to that person or to another.” Jeudy can be released from jail upon approval from a judge, with Tom Pelissero of NFL.com noting such a meeting is likely to occur within the next 24 hours (Twitter link). He was arrested around noon Thursday.
This is not a felony charge, with Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com noting (via Twitter) it is a Class 2 misdemeanor that carries a punishment of a $1K fine and up to a year in prison. It still will fall under the purview of the NFL’s personal conduct policy, which could result in a Jeudy suspension at some point.
Jeudy, 23, came to the Broncos as a first-round pick in 2020. He led the team in receiving as a rookie and posted 467 receiving yards in an injury-shortened 2021 season. The Alabama alum is expected to be a central part of the Broncos’ first Russell Wilson-led offense this season.
I don’t mean to make light of a possible domestic violence situation, but if tampering with another’s property with the intent to cause annoyance is felony domestic violence, then just about every child in the world with a sibling has committed a felony.
Article says it’s not a felony.
Ah, my mistake. Then it must be a modifier or additional charge on a felony, right? If they’re holding him on a no bond hold.
All domestic arrests are no bond, regardless of whether it’s a misdemeanor or a felony. This helps with trying to make sure the suspect doesn’t get released right away to go back and do something to the victim again.
Sibling on sibling is only considered domestic violence in Massachusetts, if I remember correctly.
Respectfully, I think the wording of the title is unfairly pointed. Report says the DV aspect of the charge is due to his relationship with the victim rather than the act in question. Criminal tampering and straight domstic violence are not the same thing.
I get your point, but all domestics arrests are due to the relationship with the victim. We don’t know exactly what he did though, so speculating that “violence” doesn’t fit the charge is kind of pointless at this time.
With that said, domestic violence as a term is broadly applied in many states. The “violence” in question does not have to be “violent” necessarily; intimidation, threats, or heated verbal arguments can be classified as domestic violence in many states. I’m not familiar with Colorado’s laws, but that enhancement could be due to the presence of a child or a prior conviction (of which I am not aware in Jeudy’s case). Colorado does allow property that is jointly owned to be considered a valid target for criminal tampering, but I don’t know if having a domestic type relationship with the other owner is a separate enhancement in that law or not.
If, for instance, Jeudy had a heated argument with his significant other and broke a door or done some other type of property damage or what not with a child present, law enforcement may have chosen to use that charge. I’m just offering a possible explanation, but as you said, without facts, it’s impossible to know, so I’ll leave the speculation there.
Now that the article has been updated with what happened, yeah “violence” doesn’t apply here at all.
Is it really that hard to stay out of trouble in the off season?
If you look at domestic violence stats in this country, it’s hard not to wonder if it’s really that hard for anyone to stay out of trouble.
I’ve repeated what you wrote in my head a few times still can’t totally grasp it. Something about the stats indicate they’re arresting people at high rates??
Could be a strong case of douche-baggery.
Maybe not exactly the image kids need to look up to. Poor choices. Immature. He could be his careers worse enemy. Maybe they should trade him to Cleveland to be with someone of his moral equal like Watson. L7
Turns out even the sheriff is saying he didn’t commit domestic violence.
I missed where Watson was arrested. Can you show me the link?
The fact that nobody got murdered will probably induce the Bronco ownership hopefuls to drive the bidding price even higher.
Where there is smoke there is fire…
I’m just curious… any of these dudes ever think of getting a vasectomy? Freeze some sperm for later, go the IVF route if you ever actually settle down. Seems like once a week theres some kinda DV story.
Fun fact: Antonio Cromartie is the father of 14 children. FOURTEEN CHILDREN! He even had four more kids after he had a vasectomy. And there are 9 different mothers.
I live in Colorado. I hope I get Jerry Jeudy Jury Duty!
I heard you only get chosen if you can say that 5 times super fast.
I think the act of stealing property should make it a theft . I mean to me it’s like he’s holding her against her will since she said she was going to VA and can’t because he stole her property her wallet and has the kids medical record or medical paperwork that she has to have to take care of the kid properly. also I think he should get the child abuse charge as when u take the babies formula and locked it in ur car your abusing the child as he can’t have his food.
Dude was fighting with his baby mama over a cell phone. The guy makes about $4 million a year and he can’t write off the cost of a cell phone?
It was his burner phone and contained all his passwords for stuff.
these fools ain’t that smart, they made it to this level on their athetlic abilites, like more then half the league is full with morons
Jeudys child’s mother never pressed any charges against him. And I quote Lawyers said he should not have been detained. Jeudys baby mother said also herself it was no act of violence towards her or she didnt feel threatened by him.I DO NOT CONDONE ANY ACT OF VIOLENCE TOWARDS WOMEN PERIOD!!!!!.So it’s nothing to c here. It will all come out into the light.
