It sounds like Brandin Cooks will be sticking in Houston. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports (via Twitter) that the receiver has inked a two-year extension with the Texans.

A report from earlier this week suggested that the wideout was on the trade block. However, Schefter notes that Cooks “is off the trade market,” while NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweets that Cooks is “not going anywhere.”
With the Texans in the midst of a rebuild, it only made sense that the wideout was included in trade rumors. However, Rapoport tweets that the Texans declined to deal the receiver at last year’s deadline, and the front office made it clear that they wanted the veteran to stick around Houston for the foreseeable future.
Of course, an extension doesn’t necessarily preclude a trade. We heard yesterday that the Browns considered a trade for Cooks but were wary of the player’s pending free agency in 2023. The Texans were reportedly seeking a second-round pick for the receiver, and you could make an argument that the extension now makes Cooks more valuable in a potential trade (pending terms). However, based on the sentiment from reporters, it sounds like Cooks will indeed be staying put.
Cooks was set to earn $12.5MM in base salary this season, the final year of a five-year, $81MM ($50.5MM) extension he signed with the Rams back in 2018. He was traded to the Texans two years later, and Cooks has topped 1,000 receiving yards in each of his two seasons in Houston. Cooks is still only 28, and while that might not necessarily mesh with the rest of the roster (including 23-year-old QB Davis Mills), the receiver should provide the offense with some veteran savviness as they navigate through their rebuild.
I recall hearing that he threatened to retire rather than be traded again after he first got to Houston. Maybe they don’t really have much of an option to trade him. Hard to blame him. Moving is lousy enough when you get to pick the destination.
Moving isn’t lousy when you literally don’t have to do ANYTHING! Just pay for it to be moved. Smh ♂️
Have you ever moved cities? He also has a wife and child, if I’m not mistaken. Athletes are humans, often married to other humans. They don’t always want to uproot their lives when they have a choice.
a hell of a lot more goes into moving than just packing up your crap dude. you LITERALLY don’t know what you are talking about.
Texans should have traded him and Tunsil. Commit to the rebuild.
3rd and 4th rounder in this years draft from the Jets made sense for both teams. Jets can extend him and get a #1 for Wilson. Or traded Corey Davis back to the Texans in the deal for better draft pick compensation going to the Texans for doing such.
Shipping Tunsil to the Giants for a swap of #13 to #7 and more draft capitol makes sense for both teams as well. Tunsil is essentially on a 1 year deal with an opt out for 2023
Keeping an outstanding LT and WR during a rebuild seems wise. It doesn’t matter who the QB is, protecting his blindside is important. Going 3 and out every offensive drive does not nurture learning. Moving the chains every now and then can validate their work in practice and give the defense a rest. I think LT and WR are the two most important places to still have talent in a rebuild.
Not when theyre 29 (Cooks) and 28 (Tunsil) this year. Theyre in their prime fast approaching 30. Maybe if they were 3 or 4 years younger. But by the time Texans are in a place to compete they’ll be in their 30s.
Texans are a few, least 2 if not 3, drafts and free agency periods away from competing.
For a rebuilding team the draft pick nets a 21 22 23 year old under control for 4 5 possibly 6 seasons on a reasonable rookie deal. This is a good year for OL and WR.
Sign them short term like they did with Cooks. They are the main supports to your bridge for the future. If you want to get an accurate assessment your Stanford QB, give him a great LT and WR.
oh no. our stud left tackle is 28. hit the panic button and trade him. ??????? you actually follow the game of football? stud left tackles often play and play very well into their mid and late 30’s. seems I recall a certain LT that just played in the Super Bowl that was well over 40. having a top end LT and WR will help a young QB develop than a handful of picks that will see half of be busts.
1. He’s never played a full season.
2. You missed the point entirely. Nice job.
You trade him at 28, in his prime, to maximize trade value because by the time the Texans are ready to compete he won’t be in his prime, if he’s even around in 3 years.
3. Paying an injury prone LT big money isnt something a rebuilding team should be doing. He’s on a 1 year deal as he can opt out after this year.
4. Youre citing outliers like Whitworth. Thats not the norm.
5. In a draft thats deep at WR and OL having 2 or 3 21 22 23 year old draft picks, acquired by trading Tunsil, on rookie contracts has more value for rebuilding teams than an injury prone LT that needs a new contract.
Texas we’re probably adamant about that 2nd rounder they wanted for him. He’s not worth that so they can keep him.
Didn’t Cooks a while back say he would never accept another trade?
Yes.
