Unlike last year, when the team had to wait until the third round to make its first selection, the Texans will be busy on Day 1 of next week’s draft. As detailed by Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, Houston is expected to keep their top pick, but their other first rounder could be in play.
“The reality is probably very few teams are going to want to come up to [No.] 3, just being honest, that’s okay” said general manager Nick Caserio yesterday. It has been well documented that the top of this year’s class is lacking in bluechip prospects; even the Jaguars may prefer to trade down from the first-overall pick.
Assuming they do use the third selection, the Texans are likely to have a free choice of the top offensive linemen, Evan Neal and Ikem Ekwonu. While one (or, quite possibly, two) edge rushers will be off the board by that point, others like Kayvon Thibodeaux should also be available. With that said, it came out earlier this week that top cornerback Ahmad Gardner could be the team’s ultimate choice.
With respect to the 13th overall pick, acquired through the Deshaun Watson trade, Caserio acknowledged the greater likelihood of a move. “Some teams are just set” he said. “Some teams only want to move down… I think it’s important just to be open-minded and be flexible.”
That second first-rounder will likely put the team in range of the second tier of corners and o-linemen, along with most available receivers. Houston’s commitment to Davis Mills as their starting quarterback could help them accommodate another team’s attempt to move up to select a signal-caller. Overall, as Caserio laid out, the Texans should be well-positioned to make multiple significant additions in the draft as they look to take a step forward from last year’s 4-13 season.
Teams wanting to move down in this years draft will most likely have to take a lesser deal than they would in other drafts if they want to move back. Texans have a lot of holes so multiple draft picks makes sense for them.
You could move out of # 3 but it’d be for something like a mid 1st, a 3rd, and some future mid round picks.
Saints make sense at 3 by trading 1 of their 1sts and 3rd this year + other future picks to get their choice of QB or LT
Jets make sense going from 10 to 3 to get both Gardner and 1 of Hutchinson, Thibodeaux, Walker.
Giants could trade up from 7 to 3 to leap frog the Jets and get Gardner and then a tackle at 5
I don’t see Green Bay or Kansas City jumping all the way to 3. They could jump to 13 to get their choice of receiver. Cowboys could jump to 13 to grab Jordan Davis.
You nailed it for the Jets
I agree about KC. I expect them to be aggressive. They are the one team I could see moving into the top 15 to get a player they covet.
I don’t buy the Jets moving up. It’s a draft stronger in depth than elite talent. Hold onto picks, grab some starters.
There’s going to be less movement in the first round, particularly the top 10, than in any draft in recent memory. I do think you could see some movement at the end of round 1 and early in round 2 though. I am betting no trades in the top 5 for sure and very unlikely 6-10.
The headline is an oxymoron. “ Texans and Plans” first you have to have a clue before you have a plan. This organization has neither.
If I’m the Texans I’d trade back and try move up in the later rounds.
For example: Swap picks 3 and 80 for picks 10 and 38 with the Jets.
Jets can then grab their favourite two defenders from the rumoured targets (Sauce, Thibodeaux, Hamilton). While still having a second round pick (35) and two selections in the third (69 and 80).
Texans on the other hand now have picks 10, 13, 37, 38 and 68. With some luck, Id take Charles Cross and Jordan Davis. Then in the second grab George Pickens and Roger McCreary, then lastly the third take Christian Harris.
Offensively you have Lovie Hamilton developing Mills at QB and he’s has some running options in Mack, Burkhead and Janovich. Two good WRers in Cooks and Pickens and some protection from Tunsil Howard and Cross.
Defensively you have a bunch of veterans and short term fill ins but you have Collins Davis and Greenard up front. Kirksey and Harris your main LBs and in the secondary McCreary helps Lonnie Johnson Jr.
Overall it would be a step in the right direction with this rebuild. You’d be decent offensively and defensively up front you’ll be fine but it would be another losing year but hopefully an improvement.
So all that being said, the big improvement from 4 wins to maybe, a real hard maybe, 5 wins; but I’m not seeing it. Jax is more improved & the Texans may go 0-6 in the division. They’re best chances to win are Detroit, NYJets, & maybe Washington. So to get to 5 they’d have to beat Jax 2X; again, I don’t see it.
Yeah idk I think against those other weak teams a lot rides on injuries and players health. Panthers last year missed CMC, Lions missed Swift, Jags missed Eitenee, etc etc having a healthy roster is the first step to winning games.
But secondly in these battle of the bottom games I think Texans don’t look awful. Mills with improvement from Lovie. Let’s say Marlon Mack is healthy and can bounce back, two really good receivers in Cooks and Pickens are good protection in Tunsil Howard and Cross. That offence will be good.
Defensively against those bad teams they will be strong against the run and putting some pressure on the QB with Collins and Davis in the middle and Greenard on the edge. McCreary and Lonnie Johnson would be a really nice corner duo against the other bottom teams.
It’s always hard fo picture wins for the bottom teams but they often surprise you. Texans as bad as they were last year had lots of close games, Steelers 7 points, Titans 6 points in OT, Browns 3 points, Colts 6 points, Colts 7 points, Bengals 6 points and Steeles 3 points.
I think 5/6 wins should be the target.
Simmons etc-What year are you looking at? The Colts bear them 31-0 & 31-3. The Browns beat them by 10. They didn’t play the Steelers or Bengals.
To be fair the Texans more than likely win the game against Cleveland if Taylor doesn’t get hurt.
My bad looking at 2020 when they also only won 4 lol
