As one of the top remaining options at the running back position, Melvin Gordon is a name worth watching in the secondary waves of free agency. As Pro Football Network’s Mike Florio details, there has been a notable update with respect to his financial future.
Gordon has changed agents in the middle of the offseason. Instead of Fletcher Smith and Damarius Bilbo, he will now be represented by Brian Murphy and Joe Panos from Athletes First. It had been recently reported that the Broncos were one of multiple teams interested in Gordon, so the veteran does seem to have generated a market for himself. Regardless of where he lands next, though, he is likely to earn much less than he did on his previous contract.
Florio reports that the 28-year-old’s market “is believed to be in the range of $2.5MM on a one-year deal”. That would mark a steep pay cut compared to the two-year, $16MM deal he signed in Denver two seasons ago. The former Charger was productive in his time with the Broncos, posting over 1,100 scrimmage yards and exactly 10 touchdowns in each campaign. Given those numbers, it didn’t come as a surprise that there was said to be a mutual interest between he and the team for a new contract.
However, the presence of 2021 second-round pick Javonte Williams complicates the matter. Operating in a time share with Gordon, Williams flashed the potential to take over as an undisputed No. 1 back last season. Even if Gordon does re-sign, then, it would only make sense to do so at a significantly reduced rate and with – quite likely – a smaller workload. With new representation, a new deal (from Denver or another club) could be coming sooner rather than later.
At 2.5mill I’m signing him to rotate with Najee in Pittsburgh. Snell isn’t doing much snd me ther has McFarland, gives them a good 1-2 year stop gap back up/part starter
Harris and Gordon would be a good running back tandem and also an excellent illustration of the silliness of drafting running backs in the first round.
He won’t take 2.5 to play 2nd fiddle to Najee which is the same reason he won’t play 2nd fiddle to Javonte. He wants more money than that and he wants to be the lead back.
And that’s why doesn’t have a job right now
Lol he’ll get a job soon enough being the only rb left in free agency. He can afford to be picky.
Chargers let him walk because he’s not the workhorse they wanted, fumbled, dropped balls, & a bad attitude (read about his comments after leaving Chargers & signing with Denver). Childish & a big ego..,
If Gordon is unwilling to play second fiddle to Williams, why exactly would he be interested in re-signing in Denver?
Highly doubt he re-signs in Denver more than likely with Someone else Williams is RB1 and Denver won’t give him the $8 they did the last 2 years.
Jets? It’s not like they are sporting anyone better, and at 2.5M they have room to fit him in.
Michael Carter is awesome.
Michael Carter looks like he can be the biggest part of a committee, but at 2.5, sure, why not.
Gordon isn’t signing anywhere for $2.5 million. This is a guy that forced his way off the Chargers as he thought he was underpaid.
That was some time ago. Gordon’s market wasn’t as good as he thought after being inspired by the Bell saga, which I think it’s fair to say he has realized. Williams is the lead back on Denver, but having a second option that can run as a first option in the case of emergency is certainly preferable. Gordon spoke like a veteran mentor more than a lead back all last season and definitely seems to have accepted Williams’ future as the number one back in Denver.
If he accepts this, as well as a contract between $2-4 million year then that’s the only way he comes back to become Williams sidekick.
Doesn’t sound like any team was backing up the truck for him. So he may have to sign for 2-4 mil on a prove it deal to get one more decent contract.
Yes a prove it deal. 2-3 mil with 5-6 mil incentive cap.
Was hoping Seattle made this signing. Converting dj dallas into punt return and utility back. Having a split back formation with 3 solid rbs and Dallas as the check down. Would revolutionize the WR position and add a blockinging back while still enabling the run/check game. Seattle can steal one with an Alex smith small ball offense. Using draft to build defense and prepare for 2023 QB.
Paying three running backs veteran money would be silly, especially when they have an offensive line full of holes. And you can’t pull off an Alex Smith style offense with such an erratic QB.
I think he is a better alternative than anything. Buffalo has right now. I also think he’s a better option than Connor in Arizona. Connor shockingly didn’t get hurt last year. Also Atlanta has a gapping hole.
Buffalo could make sense if his price tag is low enough. Atlanta could make sense, but they’re punting this season.
