Kadarius Toney could be playing elsewhere next season. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports that the Giants receiver “could be available in a trade.” Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News was first with the news yesterday and was more definitive with his report, stating that the Giants front office is actively looking to trade the former first-round pick.
There were rumblings earlier this offseason that the Giants could consider moving on from Toney, and those reports didn’t come as much of a surprise following a rocky 2021 campaign. Toney was continually in the news last season, stemming from on-the-field issues (like the time he wore the wrong cleats or time he was tossed from practice for throwing a punch) or off-the-field issues (like “a lack of playbook study” or “poor meeting behavior,” per Leonard). The receiver also missed a handful of games with injuries and COVID.
When all was said and done, the Florida product ended up getting into 10 games for the Giants, hauling in 39 receptions for 420 yards and no touchdowns. Plenty of players have rebounded following tumultuous rookie seasons, but as Leonard points out, Toney has skipped out on the team’s offseason program with new head coach Brian Daboll, leading to his spot on the trade block.
When the Giants selected Toney with the No. 20 pick in last year’s draft, they were envisioning a variety of roles for the talented wideout. Toney projected to be a slot receiver in the NFL, but his Swiss Army Knife profile offered him an even greater upside. He was expected to join a revamped receivers depth chart that also featured Kenny Golladay plus John Ross, Darius Slayton, Sterling Shepard, and Dante Pettis. Alas, the Giants still put forth one of the worst offensive performances in the NFL last season.
It’s remarkable how lousy the prior administration was in fielding a competent and competitive team.
Dave Gettleman, the gift that keeps on giving! You have it all with his legacy, bad contracts, salary cap hell, untradeable players, horrible trades, questionable draft picks, a scouting department that is the joke of the league, and of course leaving us with the term ‘Hog Mollies’ for the foreseeable future!
With good coaching and a solid, winning culture, Toney can be great. Unfortunately, the Giants had none of that last year.
Toney Is an adult. Stop making excuses for an obviously immature person
Literally every player in the league benefits from good coaching. It’s not excuses, it’s reality.
GMs and coaches can be grouped into performance tiers just like players, i.e., there aren’t 32 average GMs, let alone 32 good ones.
I’d love to see what Andy Reid could do with him.
Toney looks like an absolute crackhead in this picture.
future XFL player
He sure looked like an NFL player on the field last year.
And yet he couldn’t stay on the field … Antonio Brown lite.
Man, you’re excited to bash an NFL player, aren’t you? Toney couldn’t stay on the field, but he still managed to produce as much as their big money wide receiver free agent.
Oh yes, what excitement. It’s obvious he has talent, yet it’s also obvious that immaturity is weighing him down like an anchor. Make excuses for him if you wish. I’ll call it like I see it.
He played awfully well at times with that anchor on. Maybe he doesn’t have it in him to be all that he could be, but it’s not like maturity level is always a static thing. Sometimes you have to work a little harder with a certain kid’s personality because he’s got the talent.
Assuming Dallas moves Lamb to WR1, they’ve got a need for a slot. Is trading a 5th/6th round pick for Toney a low risk gamble with more upside than what would be left on the board at that point? I think so. I don’t think NYG could expect to get much more back than that in return, considering lack of production and the off field drama.
I can’t imagine they couldn’t get more than that and can’t imagine they’d bother trading him for so little.
That’s the problem with young players on their way to being early round busts. The potential is still there so you don’t want to get caught selling low. The best option appears to be finding another change of scenery candidate. In the NY/NJ/PA tri-state area each of the three teams (Yes, I know the Bills are the only team actually in NY State and the Steelers are also in PA, but I’m not including them) has a WR that fits that description. It’s Toney for the Giants, Mims for the Jets, and Reagor for the Eagles. I do understand, though, that Mims has gone to great efforts to improve himself this off-season, so the Jets may hold on to him. I doubt the Eagles and Giants would do a straight-up trade in division but crazier things have happened.
No way the Giants 1) trade Toney to a division rival, 2) trade him for essentially a throw away pick and then 3) have to eat the massive dead cap hit, just to watch him play against them 2X a season for the foreseeable future.
…At least you hope
He had injury plagued rookie year, first rounder will cost a lot more than a 5th or 6th, and they’re not gonna trade him to Dallas of all places
A fifth or a sixth? That is a fantasy. Even with all of his trouble (off-the-field and injury/COVID), he still caught 39 passes for 420 yards and looked amazing at times. It would take at least a second rounder. Giants are just putting feelers out there to see if someone will pay that premium. If so, they’ll trade him. If not, they won’t. They’re not desperate to unload him, just checking around.
Yeah, you are fantasizing. A second rounder for someone who disappoints at every turn? He’s done next to nothing in his brief career. 420 yards is hardly anything to be touting.
Moron, I didn’t say the Giants will get it, I said it’s what they should ask for at minimum. It’s like you didn’t read my post at all. The Giants are not desperate to unload the dude. If no one is willing to pay a premium, they’ll keep him.
Reading comprehension is not hard. You should try it.
Toney being a problem off field is extra funny when you remember that Urban wanted him in Jacksonville.
oh no, he wore the wrong cleats? CUT THE MAN!
The guy wore the wrong sized cleats to his very first practice as a professional. How many times have you heard of that happening? It was apparently a sign of things to come last season. It was one thing after another with this kid.
Not only did he wear the wrong sized cleats(to small), but he ended up taking one off and ran drills with only one clear on and barefoot on the other foot! Of course, what happened, blisters on the cleated foot and an injury to the barefoot leg.
People, you can’t make this stuff up.
TONEY can always join Bill & Toony to shoulder some of the load of the hosting duties for “Toon in With Me” Monday thru Friday at 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM (EDT) on METV !!
Toney has too much talent to give up on so soon. The Giants need to sit him down and convince him to buy into the new regime
The article states:
“There were rumblings earlier this offseason that the Giants could consider moving on from Toney”
But the link referenced states otherwise:
“The Giants will listen to offers for many players, but Schoen said (via ESPN.com’s Jordan Raanan) Jones and Kadarius Toney are not up for discussion this offseason.”
So why the change of heart? Maybe a no-show at practice?
“, but as Leonard points out, Toney has skipped out on the team’s offseason program with new head coach Brian Daboll, leading to his spot on the trade block.”
You dont want to be here maybe its time to move on?
dolphins need to trade for him . he would be cheap and would pair with Hill well
They traded five draft picks for Hill after signing Cedric Wilson this offseason and spending two first round picks on Jaylen Waddle last year. They’re not spending more draft capital to get Toney.
Yes, that is very possible, but he already had been$8 labeled a prospect with past and further potential on and off the field concerns..
As a GM, or especially as an owner, and you’re rebuilding your team from scratch, THE VERY FIRST THING YOU CHANGE IS THE CULTURE OF YOUR TEAM!!
I really thought Judge was doing a solid job of that, and I thought they really had started drafting better…
They were getting and bringing in really talented pieces to fill in their holes, but clearly their team chemistry and team culture hadn’t changed and without that they’ll never get anywhere.
Judge tried to change the culture by being a performative disciplinarian hardo, when the team needed someone with actual coaching acumen.
Getting a 5/6 for Toney isn’t bad……said Isiah Wilson.
He should be traded to the Jags. They need excitement and Florida connection might be a fan favorite.
John Schneider & Peter Carrol will trade DK & Lockett for K. Toney to complete their ultimate destruction of the team.
To Patriots for Nkeal Harry and a 4th.
Lol
Pats should be all over this. Maybe a Harry/Toney swap
Two straight comments from Pats fans suggesting this. Were you guys huffing the same can of paint?
No Giants fan huffed it all nothing left!
