After his most productive season to date, Deebo Samuel is eligible for a new contract for the first time in his career. Given the recent shifts in the WR market, he should be in line for a healthy raise relative to his rookie deal. On that point, NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco recently wrote about the terms he should be receiving shortly.

General manager John Lynch has already made it clear that new deals for both Samuel and fellow 2019 draftee Nick Bosa have been “budgeted for”. The former second rounder stood out in his rookie season, posting 961 scrimmage yards. That was followed by an injury-marred 2020 campaign, but he had a breakout year this past season.
The South Carolina alum totalled 77 catches for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns, good for a league-leading average of 18.2 yards per reception. Taking on a larger role in the team’s run game down the stretch, however, he added another 365 yards and eight scores on the ground. During San Francisco’s run to the NFC title game, Samuel recorded 291 combined yards and two total touchdowns in three games.
That production, as Maiocco notes, should elevate the All-Pro ‘wide-back’ near the top of the league in terms of annual compensation. The position has seen a number of market-shifting contracts in recent weeks, most notably the deals given to Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams. Extensions signed by the likes of D.J. Moore, Chris Godwin and Mike Williams have also reached the $20MM-per-year plateau.
Keeping in mind the aforementioned deals, Maiocco writes that “the true numbers on Samuel’s contract extension can be expected to be no lower than $22MM per season and, probably, no higher than $24MM annually”. Those figures would place him just short of the top spot at the position. If both sides can begin negotiations in that range, though, there could rightfully be “plenty of optimism” that a long-term pact can be finalized before the start of the 2022 season.
I know players already get paid a lot. But the way the jags played the market. I feel made things worse for teams in the future. Who pays someone 3rd wr that much. Hope we sign deebo at a fair price
I don’t think so. Jags can over pay if they want. As long as the other 31 teams don’t pay up, then it’s a jags over pay, vs the normal market value. Look at DJ Chark’s one year deal with the Lions. He’s better than Kirk imo and signed after him.
I think they’re low on the compensation. I bet he tops Tyreek hill 30 mil per.
There’s no way Deebo can expect to get more money than Hill or Adams, especially if he wants to get a deal done anytime in the not so distant future.
I could see 5 years 120mil with idk roughly 70mil guaranteed…
The Bosa deal is the one I’m really not looking forward to getting done, with that crazy high deal he’s going to get…I mean deservedly so, Bosa is one of the premiere Edge guys in the NFL, and possibly could even be the best, hands down if he can continue to stay healthy. Obviously, I want the 49ers to keep Bosa, and they NEED him in order to be successful, but that deal is going to likely be HUGE!!
If he has another year like he did in 2021, he deserves to be up there with those guys. Only receiver that touched the ball more times than he did was Cooper Kupp.
Bosa won’t be an issue. They have another year to worry about that. He has to play next year on the 5th year option for 1st round picks. The salary cap will expand greatly by 2024. Plenty of time for Bosa.
When is enough , enough? The average fan can’t fathom this type of money in a lifetime let alone a year. Is it going to boil down to 3 ridiculous paid players per team and scrubs the rest? Actually Steve Keim messed the market up on the Hopkins deal. I get everyone wanting the “ Biggest Deal” but after a certain amount can you really spend it all. Tyreek went to Miami for about $10,000,000 more in the lifetime of the real contract. Good luck catching a deep route pass with Tua , enjoy the $$$
Theoretically, if it does turn out that way, then the few teams that don’t overpay should be able to defeat their counterparts because they have a more well-rounded squad due to having more cap flexibility
Who cares what the average fan can fathom? The average fan can’t fathom taking one hit from an NFL player, let alone a thousand other things. Do you want NFL players to get a smaller share of NFL profits? Because the owners have no injury risk, longer careers, and a giant, appreciating asset. Players just have their career. Do you ask when enough is enough of owners and executives? Because if a player takes less money, the savings aren’t feeding the hungry.
He’s going walk and reunite with Mike McDaniel in Miami. Waddle, Tyreek and Deebo. Dolphins should be renamed the Roadrunners and make Belichik look like a cartoon coyote. Can’t wait.
49ers fans talk about this guy like he’s the 2nd coming. He’s a good player, but he can’t impact a game like Adams or Hill.
Then you haven’t been paying attention.
