We heard previously that the Jets were “all in” on 49ers wideout Deebo Samuel, and it sounds like their aggressive stance has made them the favorites in the Deebo sweepstakes. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Jets are considered to be the “front-runners” for the wideout.

Despite Samuel asking out of San Francisco, John Lynch and the 49ers front office publicly stated an unwilligness to engage in trade talks. However, Fowler writes that the organization is “at least listening” to pitches from suitors. The team’s public stubbornness could ultimately be posturing in pursuit of extra assets in a trade.
While the Jets remain the favorite to acquire the talented wideout, the Lions and Packers continue to have interest, echoing a report from the other day. However, a source believes it would take a haul for Green Bay to acquire Samuel from an NFC rival.
New York currently holds the No. 4 and No. 10 selections in tomorrow’s draft, and Jets GM Joe Douglas is prepared to use the latter choice as part of a package to acquire Samuel. The All-Pro wideout, meanwhile, wants a deal with an AAV of at least $25MM, and while that’s a hefty sum, the Jets were willing to dole out that kind of money for Tyreek Hill.
Last week, Samuel requested a trade from the 49ers. The request wasn’t entirely about money; rather, Samuel is also hesitant about his increased usage as a running back. The 49ers gave the physical receiver 59 carries last season, tying Tavon Austin‘s 2017 output for the most by a wide receiver since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
Bell 2.0?
Only in the sense that random clowns on the internet are excited to assassinate his character.
Nah, very different.
Bell wanted more money to “play both positions.”
Deebo doesn’t want to play both positions.
Taking 5-10 RB touches a game will likely cut his career in half. SF would have to pay him obscene short term money for that to be worth it, and even then he may not be interested (injury risk, quality of life after ball).
Bell was being stubborn looking for money that wasn’t there. Deebo is being smart & proactive, in my opinion.
If Deebo plays next season at the amount he’s slated to, he’ll have made less in his career than Bell had made the last season he played for the Steelers. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh had worked Bell like a rented mule.
He’s lucky they did…his gaudy gross numbers hid the fact that his efficiency numbers were pedestrian.
You can rent mules?
It’s not the newest expression in my repertoire.
You can rent goats to keep your grass short. I forget the name of the company that offers that
You can at the Grand Canyon.
In a draft deep at receiver……Jets go out, trade draft picks, and give a dude 25+ mill a year.
Why not just take Garrett Wilson at 10 or Drake London at 10? Or offer the Giants #10 for Kadarius Toney and their 2nd rounder this year or something?
Jets would have Toney for 4 years on a rookie contract and #4 this year + 3 2nd rounders in the 30s to build the roster.
I completely agree with your philosophy here. But, depending on price in terms of draft capital, it might be worth it. Deebo is a unique player. He, Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, and homeboy from the U (I forget his name) make a really intriguing quartet or receivers and all have a different skill set. They have got to get a big leap from Zach Wilson this year and waiting on a rookie (particularly an inured one in Jameson Williams) who may take some time or even bust cones with real potential downside. There is value in getting a known commodity who will be your alpha dog from day one. If this happens, I’m very curious if they spend number 4 on an OL man or defense. I would take Sauce all day.
You’re talking about Braxton Berrios. I doubt they become a trio though. Rumors have the Jets giving Elijah Moore and the 10th pick.
They should swap 2nds also. That way the Niners can get Christian Watson. If it pans out that way look for the Niners to win a few Super Bowls
So the jets wouldn’t give up either of their first round picks for tyreek hill…. But they will trade the number 10 pick AND Elijah Moore for Deebo???? And then have to give him a contract on top of all that? Do you work for the 49ers front office? Sounds like these rumors are coming from one side who is trying to price gouge the market for their WR/RB who doesn’t want to be a combo threat.
Deebo Samuel is 26.
Tyreek Hill is 28
Might not seem like a huge difference but when you give someone a 5 year contract at 26 you’re likely to get 4 if not all 5 years of value. Someone at 28 you run the risk of Julio Jones 2.0 where he fell apart at 31.
I totally forgot that Deebo runs the ball also. So that makes him more unique besides be younger than Hill.
Deebo will sell tickets also being a unique player. So the Niners can get both for him.
Jets want to get their fan base excited. An OSU WR doesn’t do it. Deebo is a proven NFL stud. Take the stud not the dud!
Why is Wilson predestined to be a dud? And they don’t have a ticket sales problem.
I think it’s a mistake if they give up anything more than #10 for him. Even that’s a lot considering a WR they pick at that spot potentially could give them comparable production for a fraction of the cost.
This is the same organization that gave up 3 2nd’s for Darnold. they don’t have a clue about player evaluation or the value of picks. There’s a reason they haven’t won much since the 1960’s.
Yeah, it’s the team name and logo problem. Joe Douglas is exactly the same as every GM that came before
Please No! And Deebo is one of my favorite NFL players! The math does not add up… Jets are not one player away from contending!
With Deebo, they’re at least competitive. By this time next year maybe you’re a more attractive destination for key free agents, officially opening the window. Gotta start building somewhere, if the player is available get him while you can
They are 12 players away!
No thanks. You can trade down the 10 for far two more starters and keep your 25M
Fake news. He plays on his rookie deal in SF or not at all.
lol good luck with that
If he isn’t traded, those are his only two options.
1. Play for the 49ers and get paid
2. Stay at home and not get paid
Not playing rolls the contract another year and they are back to where they are now plus all the years they can franchise him. Deebo has zero leverage in this situation. He created this media circus and now he may have to live with the consequences.
Sure he has some leverage. He’s really good and neither having him nor compensation is a horrible outcome for SF.
And not playing and not getting paid is a horrible outcome for him. The team will still move ahead without him and he will just add on to this entitle bratty persona he has created.
They’ve had him working double duty at the riskiest position in football. His whole rookie contract is worth less than half a year of his market value. This is the first time he’s allowed to seek an extension, so he’s doing it. You can call him bratty and you can try to rule with an iron fist, but that doesn’t actually work as a management style.
When the team has said they have made room for his extension and he knows he will get it when Jimmy G is dealt away this summer, the whole I want my money and I want it now style of negotiating is what triggers the iron fist style of management. Deebo works for the 49ers, the 49ers don’t work for Deebo.
Jets aren’t dealing g a first rd to get Deebo- gonna have to be a package of later picks. They weren’t offering a first rd to KC when they accepted the offer
Then they aren’t getting Deebo if one of those first rounders aren’t included. They want 2 first rounders for him and if you aren’t parting with one, its all a pipedream.
Maybe just try waiting and seeing if they can overpay him next offseason rather than giving up draft capital or a promising young guy?
I keep hearing when they get certain players they gonna win multiple SB’s.Stop it 9ers fans.Just stop it please.Your not gonna win anotha SB.Take it from me, I’m a long suffering Lions fan for 33yrs. I’m just 48 yrs old.Say what u want ,I welcome all jokes heard it all b4 buddy,so ur not saying nothing. You had your chance last season against the Rams, but u whiffed like usual (a la Shanahan conservative plays)… Your not winning anything with JimmyGee, Lance or Deebo.Like I said b4, it’s hard to beat a team 3 times in a row.So my theory has been proven.Thats in any sport.
Why would anyone pay top dollar for a player who doesn’t actually want to be the player teams would pay top dollar for?
I agree whole heartily…why would they.
When it comes to the evaluation of players and the draft, the JETS have never been the brightest light in the room.
