Add another draft pick to the compensation that the Texans received for quarterback Deshaun Watson. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter), Houston received a previously unreported 2022 fourth-round pick from the Browns. Further, while the original trade saw the Browns acquiring a 2024 fifth-round pick from Houston, that selection has been updated to a 2024 sixth-round pick.
The full compensation is below, per Schefter:
Browns receive
- QB Deshaun Watson
- Selection choice — Round 6, 2024
Texans receive
- Selection choice — Round 1, 2022 (No. 13)
- Selection choice — Round 4, 2022 (No. 107)
- Selection choice — Round 1, 2023
- Selection choice — Round 3, 2023
- Selection choice — Round 1, 2024
- Selection choice — Round 4, 2024
The Browns officially announced the trade yesterday (interestingly, the team’s website still has the former trade details). Major members of the organization discussed Cleveland’s acquisition of Watson, including general manager Andrew Berry.
“Deshaun has been among the very best at the position and he understands the work needed to re-establish himself on and off the field in Cleveland,” Berry said (via the team’s website). “We are confident that he will make positive contributions to our team and community as we support his return to football.”
overpay on all fronts…
Yes, but if he leads us to a Super Bowl, how many will care that it was an overpay (or that he is, perhaps credibly, accused of sexual assault?
Answer: no one! If he wins all is forgiven.
Totally agree, but is he enough to get it done? Seems like there was a lot given up here for a team that need a handful more pieces. They traded away the next few years or talent for a QB who’s not top five. Top ten???
He’s top 5. Last season he played in 4863 yards passing, 70% completion, 33TD – 7 interceptions and over 500 yards rushing. 112 QBR. Rodgers won the MVP this year with a 112 QBR.
I would rank him the following – Allen , Mahomes, Rodgers, Burrow , Herbert, Brady , Jackson , Wilson, Watson
You can interchange the top 3 without a problem , and this is based on current players performance. Don’t forget the AFC North is a much stronger division than where he racked up a lot of stats in the south. Not discrediting his talent but he has his work cut out for him. Also some kind of suspension lingers … I’d be shocked if it’s less than. 6 games. Going to be an interesting NFL season for sure.
Funny that I didn’t see you write anything about Rodgers division. How do you rank him that high and his division has been terrible for years? Burrow racked up his stats in a weak division last year. Browns and Ravens were besieged by injuries and covid. You are basing Burrow on last year. If you used that theory, Watson’s last season of playing was better than Burrows season in ALL categories
You are knocking Wilson down because of an injury? He came back to early. Plus ranking a player on one year is useless. You rate guys with 2 years higher than a guy whose has won the SB and been leader in Div for more than half his time there. Allen is your top rated QB? He has 1 year of good play. I like Allen and root for him but he isn’t #1. Context 1 year does not have it.
Browns defense was 5th in yards allowed. Top 3 OL. Top 3 RB room. Outside of adding another WR which they will do, what do you consider a handful of pieces they need to add? QB play was the problem last year and they got a top 5 guy
Watson may miss 6-10 games due to suspension. There’s a good chance they don’t make the playoffs, especially with the AFC West’s teams all upgrading. Bills, Pats, Ravens, Colts, Bengals, Chiefs, Chargers, Raiders, Broncos all look better than the Browns on paper.
Definitely a tough conference and injuries will play a part. I understand Watson will get suspended and playoffs will be tough next year but he’s 26 and the Browns had a top 5 defense in yards allowed last year and we already know they have top 3 offensive line and top 3 RB room.
Your top rankings can go away quickly. Look at Seattle and the LOB. A couple signed elsewhere one went down with career ending injury. In a couple years there was one player left. I imagine many of the players are on first contract. When those roll around there will be a lot of money being doled out. Much of it from other teams. Not sure when the new contacts come around how many can you keep and be under salary cap? First year will be a wash second is best chance you have. I am assuming many players will be lost. Year 4 you will lose close to all those players but the problem is you have a couple years until you will have the picks to rebuild. It is tough to rebuild with most FAs and low round trades. Good luck you have 1 maybe 2 years to win a SB. Good luck with a guy who is a sex offender even if he won’t get indicted for it he still did creepy things.
No he isn’t
Apparently you’re in the minority. I could give you Rodgers, Brady, Mahomes as definitely better. After that, Watson matches up well with Wilson, Allen, and Jackson. Herbert and Burrow are coming on but they don’t run like Watson. Watson has great passing stats and he can move
So, excluding Rodgers, you’d take him before Allen, Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert, and Stafford? I thinking he’s in the Lamar Jackson, Russel Wilson and Dak Prescott group.
Burrow and Herbert need more time to show me. Did you read my post? I said I’d take Mahomes. A top 5 list is debatable but I like a quarterback that can throw and run. He does both very well.
Yeah I read your post. We posted at the same second. I read it and you’re right that it’s debatable, but you’re wrong that your opinion is good. We should be talking about how you’d rank people to give up all this talent. You’d never trade for Brady in ‘22 so your take is immediately out. You’d take Allen WAY before Watson and you’d for sure take Herbert and Burrows before because you know they’ll be better. Absolutely that’s what you’d do. He’s not a top five QB. Stop it.
Burrow can’t move and Herbert is too inconsistent. As a player, Watson has had a statistically better career than either. Watson does have baggage
Disgusting
point in case, Ray Lewis helped cover up a murder and no one cares cause he won a superbowl.
Ray won 2 SB’s. All forgotten (forgiven). Great comment.
He is OURS, now. Whether we like it or not, he is the guy.
I was upset that they were trying to get him at all. Then I was horrified that we got him. Now I’m trying to find a path where I can accept the reality. He is our starting quarterback.
Perhaps this is Karma for all the shade we threw at Pittsburgh and Roethlisberger. Maybe over the next five years our friends in Pittsburgh will feel the same way we did when that guy won and won and won.
The Steelers didn’t mortgage their future obtaining Big Ben with giving up draft picks and making him one of the top paid QB’s
Rams traded 2 firsts and won a Super Bowl. Those last 2 firsts are probably going to be 26-32 not any franchise. You won’t make the Super Bowl without a top QB, yet you can make it without a top roster. Bengals came within 90 seconds of winning a Super Bowl with the worst offensive line.
Let’s see how the Rams do the next couple of years. I like Stafford but is not top 10. Now that the draft picks kick in will be harder to get back.
This is factually untrue. Two of his associates went to trial and were found not guilty of murder on the grounds of self defense, as they were initially attacked exiting a limo. Lewis pled guilty to obstruction of justice for initially telling the police he was not there.
As much as “no one cares because he won a superbowl,” people who love to point out that he “helped cover up a murder” also do not care to look at the actual history. Since the actions were deemed to be self defense, it is considered justifiable homicide, not murder.
That’s not exactly true. I know plenty of people who care
Probably. I mean Kobe in life was a rapist, but in death, Lakers fans want to make him a saint.
Kobe wasn’t a rapist. If you had any knowledge of the situation you would know the woman’s story held no water.
Yeaaaa… it held so little water that Kobe settled with her out of court for 2.5m? That’s what innocent people do when their accusers stories “hold no water”.
That’s why he paid her. Because he didn’t rape her
None of the evidence supported sexual assault. Do some research you fking moron. Hell, a DA was fired just for prosecuting.
Everyone should care about the latter.
No SB ever for Cleveland!
I don’t know… they did get that 2024 6th…
Yeah this is ridiculous
If the Texans were smart they trade back from #3 and #12 and possibly out of the 1st round all together.
The roster is devoid of talent they need as many draft chances as possible to hit on cornerstone players.
Id also trade Tunsil and Cook to add to the draft haul.
A lot of good interior linemen too in the mid rounds. Cade Mays, Marquise Hays, Thayer Munford, Ed Ingram, Daniel Faalele, Nicholas Petit Frere, Darian Kinard, Rasheed Walker. Oline needs an overhaul.
A lot of good TEs in the 2nd round and WRs in 2nd 3rd rounds too. Receiving group needs an influx of talent.
Good rbs in mid to late rounds too. Dameon Pierce James Cook Zymir White Kyren Williams Hassan Haskins.
The only name on that list I know is cade mays and I’d pass on him. I agree with everything else. More picks made more likely you are to hit.
I’m confused. Both teams announced the trade separately and neither included these extra picks. Did they forget? (That’s rhetorical)
I understand if the media gets it wrong, but when both teams announce the trade with the exact same terms, how is it that two extra picks get included?
They’re trading picks in the later rounds so they’re not extra picks
But they weren’t included in the original announcements. The Browns give up an extra 4th rounder this year while getting a 6th in 2024. I get that they’re later round picks, but that still doesn’t explain to me why neither team included them in their trade announcements.
Depending on who you heard it from. I read the Plain Dealer.
Hate the trade and am no longer a Browns fan.
What size do you wear? I’ll buy your gear
Are you a Guardians fan ??
Slide on over to the Lions. They’ll give you the same fix that the Browns have given you over the years.
Browns collecting football cards again
I think the Browns are nuts to have made this move.
I remember they traded Paul Warfield for the draft pick that got them Mike Phipps. (And HOW THAT worked out)
What was a huge overpay is now even worse.
Browns hve always been a trash organization and now it continues. I actually think there is a good possibility Deshaun Watson is innocent and all these females are trying to exploit him. The bottom line is that this was a terrible trade. They gave up way too much and gave him too big of a contract. That being said, when last healthy he was the 2nd or 3rd best QB in football
Twenty two separate women are trying to exploit him? Guy is clearly a scumbag.
I would love to hear more about how you rationalize the possibility that these 22 women are working together
“Who cares if he’s a rapist! If he wins, that’s all that matters! He’s OUR guy!” – Browns fans now
“Get that rapist bum out of here!” – Browns fans after the curse of the Browns hits Watson too and he stinks and they lose like Tim Couch 2.0
Rapey rapey
He just wanted to have a “happy ending” to all of this!
A Dak Prescott clone, i.e., can’t beat good teams but collects a lot of garbage time stats.
Yeah people are forgetting when they point to his stats that he was the king of garbage time.
Super Bowl or BUST with that costs…
