Houston is still awaiting a resolution on the Deshaun Watson situation, but that won’t stop them from making changes to their quarterbacks room. The Texans are signing QB Kyle Allen, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post (on Twitter).
Allen is inking a one-year, $2.5MM deal, including $2.25MM in guaranteed money.
Allen spent the first two seasons of his career in Carolina, including a 2019 campaign where he went 5-7 as a starter while tossing 17 touchdowns (vs. 16 interceptions). He was traded to Washington prior to the 2020 season, and he ended up appearing in six games (four starts) during his two seasons with the organization. In total, Allen has completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 4,318 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions in 21 games (17 starts).
The Texans reportedly aren’t interested in receiving a QB in a Watson trade, and the team is content to move forward with Davis Mills as the starting QB. Allen will join a depth chart that also includes Jeff Driskel.
Last place you go before the USFL or going into coaching.
What is New York Jets
I mean, the Jets are at least signing some guys who would be employable elsewhere, Flacco notwithstanding.
Im sure Kyle Allen would have found a back up gig somewhere for less money.
SF once they trade Garapollo
Raiders if Mariota leaves
Bills now that Trubinsky is in Pitt
Broncos need a back up behind Wilson
There are better options for contenders, though. Dalton, Brissett, possibly Winston, Mariota.
All probably much more expensive than Allen, who is a legit QB2. I dearly wish the Vikings had signed him.
Contenders? The Texans? Surely you jest! LOL!
Yeah. Contenders for the #1 pick next year
think they meant the contenders have better options in the pool than signing Allen
The owner is certainly hoping to net several first rounders from a Watson and tank for the 3-4 QBs coming out next year.
Davis Mills is plan A. He showed promise last year. If he continues to show growth the Texans won’t be drafting a QB next year. Which is great cause you can trade out knowing you already have a QB.
If Mills has a solid year and they’re in position to draft an elite QB prospect, they can always trade Mills for a better pick than they spent on him while still aiming higher.
If mills has a solid year why trade a proven commodity who knows the system for an unproven gamble that might be better. Especially when you can trade the unproven gamble for a kings ransom.
Mills w a solid year and a kings ransom > unproven gamble and couple picks from Mills
I see where you’re coming from, but if you think Mills’ upside is OK starter (which would be a huge win for a third rounder!) and you have a chance to take a top QB prospect, I think you cash in Mills. Those last two cheap years will be more valuable to a team with a better roster, and it will give you more draft capital to build around the rarest, most precious asset in all of football, even if that upside comes with a little more downside. I have a hard time seeing how Mills ever grows into a top ten QB, which I don’t mean as a slam.
Mills may never be elite. But I do think his ceiling is derek carr. Not elite but certainly tier 2.
The Texans need to put better pieces around Mills.
They have the #3 this year. Theyre gonna get picks from Watson.
In 2022 2 1sts. If they can trade out of 3 and get a 2023 1st doing so theyll have 3 1sts in 2023. Theyll at least have 2 1sts in 2022 2023 2024 if the asking price for Watson is met.
I dont think the Texans will be good this year. But dont think Mills will be the reason.
They should trade guys like Tunsil and Cooks to add to the draft haul.
But in the next 3 drafts they need to add some TEs, WRs, Oline.
I agree with all of that. They have three cheap years of Mills starting now. I don’t think they can build a roster good enough to compete with a QB of his caliber in that time, and I’m not a believer in paying big money to middle tier QBs. If he turns out as well as Carr, maybe. But I don’t think you pass up a Stroud or Young to hold onto that guy and eventually pay him second contract money.
Seems like a lot of money for a guy who likely won’t win a game for you.
He won five games for the 2019 Panthers, going 5-7 for a team that finished 5-11 with the 20th ranked offense in points scored and 31st ranked defense in points allowed.
He won a game for Washington in 2020, though he only went 1-3 for the 7-9 playoff team and lost two close games to the Giants. Still, his passer rating was 99.3 that year.
It’s a good signing.
It would be a good signing at $1 million, not $3 million. The guy made $850,000 last year in Washington and couldn’t beat out a former XFL quarterback. You don’t give him a $2 million dollar raise for that.
Actually, Allen beat out Heinicke for the QB2 job on the Panthers in 2019, leading to Taylor’s release and eventual sojourn in the XFL, and Allen’s 12 starts that year. But after the playoff game against the Bucs, it was unlikely that Allen was really going to be allowed to compete against Heinicke for the QB2 job, just like Heinicke was never really allowed to compete with Ryan Fitzpatrick for the QB1 job.
Assuming the reports are true that the Texans aren’t in the market for another QB, Allen is slotting in as their QB2 and Driskel as their QB3, and their cap hits reflect that. Allen has a much better W-L record (7-10 vs. 1-8) and better stats than Driskel (84.9 passer rating vs. 79.4), who has a cap hit of $1.05 million. Allen is being paid like a QB2, and Driskel like a QB3. Washington didn’t RFA tender Allen because they already have a QB2 in Heinicke.
You say Allen should have been signed for $1 million? Here are some of the QB’s not on their rookie contracts with cap hits around $1 million for 2022: David Blough (0-5 as a starter, 62.2 passer rating), Sean Mannion (0-3, 66.2), Will Grier (0-2, 33.2, also beat out by Allen in 2019), Josh Johnson (1-8, 70.7), Kevin Hogan (0-1, 61.5), Brett Rypien (1-0, 61.2), Matt Barkley (2-5, 66.6, sliding down to QB3 after the Bills traded for Case Keenum).
Allen was a good signing.
